Nerd stuff is anything you have an extraordinary wealth of knowledge about that probably is difficult to discuss with the average lay man. It could a particular hobby, or a subject matter you've done too much incidental research about. Something that if someone were to ask you about it, you could talk for hours in depth about it. It could be a specific video game, cars, a particular field of science, music, history, a board game, a card game, a sport, a tv series, art, comic books, a celebrity, whatever. Anything you can really nerd out to. The weirder and more specific the better. I used to care about computers and new technology and new video games when I was younger, but I've kind of lost touch. Doom and Doom level design is like my ultimate forte. I've spent many hours researching the different genres and subgenres of maps, looking at overhead layouts, pondering about gameplay scenarios, detail, lighting, resource distribution, experimenting with mapping tricks, texture alignment, ease of movement, layout flow, different years and time periods of doom mapping, etc. I don't think anything fascinates me more than that. What's your nerd stuff?

An opportunity to rant about my favorite game of all time, Old School Runescape? This is most excellent. It's basically a free roam (retro style) adventure MMORPG set in medieval times. And it's a ton of fun. I played it as a kid in the early days, from 2004-2009 ish. Quit around 2010 because of too many unfavorable updates, but later returned in 2013 when the makers of the game brought back the "old school" servers that I knew and loved. It completely revived the dying game too, and renewed interest from players who were previously unhappy with the way the game had been headed (like me). Updates are handled via player polls, to keep the bad updates out of the game. It usually averages between 40,000-60,000 players online every day. And the numbers have been steadily increasing since 2013, via frequent tournaments and popular Twitch streamers like b0aty and Ice Poseidon giving the game additional exposure. There is also a fuckton of drama that goes on in the community too, captured in lovely meme-esque detail on the 2007scape sub-Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/But yeah, this place is usually fucking hilarious. Epic memes, some of the best I've ever seen in any game community. It's a fun place to hang out, even when you're not playing. Most of the jokes will probably fall flat to outside observers though. Lots of inside references to stupid shit. Anyway, cult game with a unique community. I have over 170 days of play time logged, and have completed every single quest (all 149 of them). All my stats are 80+ and I have the best armor/weapons in the game. Yes, get on my level of nerd. I slay dragons. Anyway, I know basically everything about the game, from stats to weapons to RNG, damage per second, etc. It is an easy game to learn though, much more casual to pick up than something like League of Legends. I prefer the more casual approach, since in Runescape lots of stats can be trained semi-afk (away from keyboard) while you listen to music, read, or do other dumb shit on the computer. Like write garbage music reviews! There is also a huge Donald Trump cc (clan chat) and it is absolute mayhem. Lol Anyway, if anyone joins the game, add me. WE CAN TALK POLITICS, AND SLAY DRAGONS TOGETHER ))

I had a friend recommend Runescape to me a looooong time ago. Goddamn that game was addictive, but very silly. It was funny how shady some people were. "The wilderness" or "wildy" was this location where players could kill each other and take each other's treasure. The trick was to suit up the best armor and weapons, train one or more particular skills as much as possible, and stock your entire inventory with food and just enough resources to do battle with. It was fun to see all the people in rune armor waiting at the border of the wilderness, waiting for an unsuspecting peasant who just barely started the game wander in there unsuspectingly. It would be this whole mental poker-face thing where every person would wait for the other to kill the easy prey, then someone who is even tougher would chase the killer and kill him for his armor and items. It was especially funny when people tried to lead you to treasure in the wilderness. Some people would tour them around all the treasure in the safe part of the world, then take them to the wilderness last after trust was built for the long con! Then hopeless wimp would be betrayed get fucking mercilessly gutted in the woods for all his loot.
Very funny subculture in there too. I remember there was a good bit of cybersex* going on in there while I played. It was hilarious how kid-friendly they tried to make the game, as they started censoring all the bad words, including abbreviations and mispellings of bad words! (like wtf, fuk, phuck, fook, fooking, etc.)
That game was actually pretty hilarious, but also very addictive. You could easily spend 12 hours in a row playing it, which is why I had to cut it out of my life. Fun memories though. Former doomworld member Creaphis mentioned he was a pretty staunch runescape player. I wonder if he still plays.
(*) a male and female character would stand directly on top of one another next to a bed in a house and just type "Ooohh baby, yeah, mmmm, harder" into the chat over and over. It was hilarious

The game has a silliness to it, for sure. Which makes for some good comedy memes. But it also has a seriousness to it as well... much like Doom in many ways. Even the 90's style pixel graphics are similar. The PvP (player versus player) competitive scene is intense, with huge tournaments and large prizes. Upwards of $10,000 for the winners. One just finished a few days ago actually, some guy from Finland won $10k. Two other clans (one being RoT) won $20k. I've entered some tournaments myself, but have sadly never come close to winning. I consider myself good at the game, but honestly there are some people that are just extraordinarily good. Players I can't even touch in terms of skill. It's all about the reflexes and your knowledge of swapping between different prayers/skill interfaces in combat against multiple opponents. It is pretty hectic. Thankfully the audience has shifted towards adults now, there is no censorship of swear words or anything like that in-game anymore. Actually, the community is pretty toxic in some ways. Lots of bullying and blatant racism in certain clans of the game, which is probably surprising given the innocent surface presentation of the game/community. One aspect of drama is a Twitch streamer named "Emily" who faked cancer for donations. Well, it was never proven, but she spontaneously "recovered" two weeks later, so it's pretty suspicious indeed. People harass her in-game and in real life all the time, to the point of making her cry. What she did was wrong, mind you. Still, it's funny to see some of the meme videos people put together online. Absolute savagery. P-)

Doom for sure. Level design shit, ports, community, etc - total addicted fuck who knows way too much about that shit, thankfully that's not uncommon in the Doom community! But there's other nerd stuff I have too, for example I'm ridiculous when it comes to speed-mapping ability in RCT parks and totally understand the game logic to the point where the efficiency I can lay shit down with is absurd, when I'm properly focused. I also know waaaaayyy too much shit about NES/Famicom bootlegs, from about 2008-2012 I was insanely addicted to collecting them and learning all I possibly could about the various developers, locations the carts were made and distributed, etc etc.. I bought a bunch of stuff on eBay that, looking at it right now, isn't even available anymore. There was a sort of craze around weird old NES bootlegs and stuff a couple years after, I totally lucked out with the timing. There's whole communities dedicated to it, bizarrely enough, and I was one of the earliest members: s4.zetaboards.com/PGC_Forums/index/

dn What exactly is warhammer? I've heard of it and I've seen art and stuff about it before, but I've never really looked into it. Mind my ignorance, but is it like a strategy game or a roleplaying thing? I honestly don't know @rush Reflexes?? Whoa.. I'm just a scrub, I think my main character got up to like level 42 or something. I remember the toughest guy I saw was a level 136. I'm sure people go much higher than that. The combat in the game seems so random and results driven. You just get locked into battle and you can retreat after a certain amount of time, and each player just takes forced turns doing a random amount of damage. I know there's other elements of skill like magic and prayer, archery, and the equipment you're wearing, but I never imagined there being much element of skill in the game between two equally levelled opponents. I just thought whatever happens, happens. Doomkid Rollercoaster Tycoon was a sick game. I freaked out when I made my first super dangerous roller coaster and the carts went off rails and launched into the mountains. Goddamn that was hilarious! What do you do with bootleg cartridges? Can you play them on your NES system? --- btw I love this forum for these kinds of conversations. Doomworld is just too crowded to get to know people better. I think thats why its so easy to get in fights. I hope i can get a few other doomworld members in here.

I know there's other elements of skill like magic and prayer, archery, and the equipment you're wearing, but I never imagined there being much element of skill in the game between two equally levelled opponents. I just thought whatever happens, happens. It is somewhat unpredictable, but there is also a lot of skill involved when it comes to knowing how to utilize certain freeze spells and protection prayers. The skill ceiling climbs when you introduce the other two sides of the combat triangle into the equation (hybrid fighting). Then you have to switch between magic, range and melee, AND know when to special attack your opponent for a knock out hit. Timing is everything, speed of clicking and switching items too, but also knowing what potions to bring, what food to use... it actually gets a little overwhelming. And when people beat you, they usually rub it in your face as well, haha. Just to add salt to the burns. Makes for good fun though. Actually, the PvM (player versus monster) scene is even more challenging than the PvP scene. I had to watch a 30 minute guide video and memorize a visual diagram just to learn how to effectively kill a solo boss named Zulrah. The boss is optional though, for making money. You don't need to learn this in order to normally play the game, thankfully. Just an optional challenge waiting in the free-roam world. You make amazing money, but it's not easy to learn. And I'm still not exactly great at it (I die a lot). I mean look at this. Hol-eee-shite. This is a simplistic overview, showing you where to stand and what protection prayers to use. The video shows the in-game appearance more clearly.

When it comes to modding Doom, I still consider myself to be very dilettante.

My nerd stuff is anything dealing with law enforcement. My dad is a retired cop, and I am training both physically and mentally to become one myself. I have had an obsession with law enforcement since I was a child.
I love talking about procedure, an officer's point of view in various situations, the legality of certain situations...anything at all law enforcement and I am all over it.
This includes training myself to maintain a level head when people are less than cooperative (heh, if you compare my posting habits from when I first joined doomworld to now, you can see that I have become quite less combative...usually.), firearm training and education, self defense training, getting physically fit for the physical agility test, working on a more professional appearance and demeanor, watching cop fail videos to get an idea of what not to do...the list goes on.
