One of my favorite things about Black Metal is the atmosphere. And the diversity! Songs can range from sounding raw and dark, to epic and beautiful. Some popular groups include Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum and Immortal. However, here are some personal favorites of mine (that are a little more obscure by comparison).
Sacramentum, which fuses twisting melody with aggressive blast-beats. Probably my favorite album in this genre, along with this song in particular. The last minute is especially amazing (3:30 onward in the video below). Alluring, spell-binding riffs:
On the other hand, there are groups like Varathron and Rotting Christ. Which play Black Metal too, but at a slower (and often more relaxed) pace. Also, there is an anthropomorphic raccoon on this album cover, which maybe makes it qualify (at least partially) as furfag metal. That's unfortunate, but forgivable:
Oh, and Dawn. Similar to Sacramentum and Dissection, but with a grittier sound:
Anyway, share stuff that you like here.

I used to think black metal was stupid because it looked like a ridiculous fashion statement like KISS x 1,000 with the smooth black hair, face paint and all the leather and metal spikes. I'm opening up to it though. I know there's some great stuff out there if I take the time to look for it, as is the case with most subgenres of metal. I'm a huge sucker for ravencult for example. This is a one man band called Xasthur. The vibe I get from this is indescribable. Total hopelessness, dread, and emotionally lost. Hauntingly beautiful.

These guys are a bit more refined in their sound. But equally amazing.

Unique too, the only comparison I can think of is Urfaust. Yet they still have a different style. Though when considering the depressive "I want to curl up in a miserable ball and die" side of Black Metal, I think this Urfaust song needs to be heard. I don't want to like it, because it is so hopeless and bleak, but I do end up liking it:

As an audio nerd the biggest thing keeping me away from most of this stuff is the abysmal recording quality.

That guy in the thumbnail has terrible trigger discipline. Almost as bad as Diane Feinstein.

Lmao, what the actual fuck is this? So damn weird. Man, what happened to these guys? This band used to sound so dark and brutal. Their debut is one of my favorite Black Metal releases. Especially this song. Ugh, the bit at 2:35! And those tortured shrieking vocals. Pure evil I tell yeah! Pure evil.

Burzum - The Umbraceous Ensemble:
[1] Varg Vikernes*: Vocals and tesseraschizoid warbling, electric guitars (leap frog stick), drums and cymbals. The Thundering Horsemen of the Darkest Dawn, screams in the night, and icy waterfalls.
[2] Euronymous^: Producer, bomber, banshee, The Rack. Destroyer of sacred cornerstones. Hooded gremlin. Makeup, Norwegian boner for Spanish corpse fetish.
* Uses the forest for a bathroom.
^ Died like a little bitch.

This song got me hooked on Black Metal. This Dreadful Emptiness by Austere. Apparently the band split up, which is a shame because their music was actually really good.
Top ten most depression black metal songs. They are perfect to listen to during the Fall and Winter seasons.
