So I roped some friends of mine into playing Doom co-op last night. It was an utter blast and we had a lot of fun, so much so that I'm going to be making this a regular thing. However, I did discover one crucial thing: when it comes to multiplayer co-op, not all maps are created equal, and what makes a good singleplayer wad isn't necessarily what makes a good multiplayer one.
For example, I decided to start us off on Back to Saturn X Episode 1. Things went pretty well until we got to some of the later levels, which were much more convoluted. People commonly got lost, and Doom isn't really all that much fun when you're stuck in a maze trying to find a key or demons to fight. I know that there's plenty of map sets and mods designed with co-op in mind but I'm not really sure where to start looking for them. Since this is going to be a weekly thing I'd like to be able to rotate out WADs on a weekly basis to keep things feeling fresh, so I'll take as many suggestions as people have for great co-op wads.
I'm also looking for good multiplayer-focused Zandronum mods too. We'll be doing Reelism next week and I'm expecting this to go gangbusters, but if there are other similar horde mode or co-op mods that'd be really cool too.
My party size will be over 4 players but probably not more than 8. Thanks!

There's some good ones that i play on ZDaemon almost every week or so - i'm kinda stucked in playing only the stuff available at the brazilian servers as the ping for almost everything else is just too high. So these are the ones that i play consistently with 2-3 players and are tons of fun: Arrival, Plutinya, Uprising and Attack on IO. edit: added links for convenience sake. Oh, also, one that could be really fun for coop would be Preacher, at the beggining of each map there is this random teleport thingy that takes the player to different spawn points in the map. edit 2: forgot Uprising, this one has a lot of custom stuff.

This might be a cop-out answer to some, but I honestly think its the best, especially since you're trying to warm people up to the game. I have a few other recommendations but I think they're better for people who have a more robust familiarity with Doom since coop Doom can sometimes be a relay race and less experienced players get left behind. You'll have to do a lot of testing to get the settings just right, but it has enormous potential for great coop slamfests: Use the Oblige Level MakerYou can generate entire megawads. Make a quick playlist of midis in SLADE to add background music to the generated wad. It's probably really fun with gameplay mods too. For example, friendly telefrags while going through teleports are an annoying thing in Coop and a lot of wads have them. so if you go into the level design control settings you can simply turn teleports off. You can also tell it to make short maps but with gigantic rooms. You can pick more or less of certain types of monsters, and you can turn ammo up so players never run out. You can also reduce doors and tell it to make maps into mostly vast caves and outdoor areas so its not very confusing. The maps aren't always beautiful but they're definitely coherent. It's got working traps and secrets. The monster placement is sporadic and random but I do find it to be very fun most of the time. Sometimes you'll get some cool map ideas from playing the weird stuff it makes. Seriously recommend generating single maps and tweaking settings though before making megawads to dump on your friends because it does take some time and resources to make a megawad, and if you fuck with the settings too much, you can certainly make 32 levels of unplayable garbage where you're surrounded by archviles in the starting room and the closest weapon is a chainsaw.

Here's a little known or forgotten gem I originally got off an add-on CD before I had the internet and it's something different, both coop and Vs at the same time as it's one player defending against all the rest. Bunka.wad / Bunker Storm. www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/deathmatch/a-c/bunkaFor Doom 1. Designed for 4 players max but more should be fine. No crouching, no jumping, no mlook, as any of those take advantages away from the sole defender and could allow shortcuts. A defender has to be mindful about leaving some passage open. Someone did that, but I was a good sport, ignoring it, and continuing the normal intended process of breaking in. Should read the txt. Note that skill 4 requires the dehacked patch to turn pillars into stationary zombiemen sentries with chainguns. Unfortunately the patch is old binary format you can't just stick in the wad for any port. I have a version I was messing around with converted to Doom 2 textures with a bunch of alignment done, possibly ZDoom Hexen format. And I could simply use dehacked v2.4 and the appropriate version of Doom (probably 1.666) to save a newer txt format version deh, but I don't have time to mess with it tonight. Wouldn't be surprised if I have exactly that deh patch lying around somewhere, probably decorate versions of the sentries too.

Ok here it is. Vanilla format Bunker Storm for Doom 1 as originally intended. and ZDoom Hexen format Bunker Storm for Doom 2. Be sure to read the txt file. Yes, you can play it single player, breaking into the bunker against monsters. Skill 1/2 altdeath with nomonsters is intended for multi. Skill 3 allows two defenders in. Skill 4 intended for single player and Zombiemen with chainguns (stronger than Doom 2 chaingunners) only appear on skill 4. Mobile ones replace tall red pillars and stationary ones replace short red pillars. (Side effect: Spider Masterminds turn into Zombies while attacking.) There are also regular weak zombies. No decorate. Embedded dehacked. Some better versions of Doom 2 music by Sycraft. Teleporters into the bunker only work in multiplayer, but running Zandronum in deathmatch mode makes it act like multiplayer.
EDIT: Quick reupload just now. Aligned some switch textures that were somehow misaligned in Doom 2 version.
I suppose you could play skill 4 coop against monsters if you disable the beginning teleporters or simply don't use them.
