I have played all of them except for the new one. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the aesthetics of VI. The graphics look very cartoon-y to me, and a step backwards from Civilization V. Last night I played a game of Civilization V from 6 pm to 3 am. The "one more turn..." syndrome can make the hours seemingly fly by, and make you lose track of time. But I built a really awesome culturally focused civilization with Egypt. Which was really fun for a change, because I usually like to play as war-like civilizations.
In regards to future iterations:
I suppose more immersive game mechanics that better reflect the real life dynamics of geo-politics, and civilization would be awesome.
But other than that, the graphics are a main reason for getting a new version of a game like Civilization. I think my favorite was Civilization IV, after I heavily modded the graphics and the map scripting, to make more realistic terrain. I want to see more photo-realistic graphics, and battle animations. I don't want it to look goofy, with people that have giant feet, and disproportionate anatomy. And Dumb looking buildings, that curve, like it was drawn by a 5 year old.
I like to mod FPS, but I would love to create a turn-based strategy game like civilization.

Really? Last one I got super-sucked into was Civ 2. I thought it was the ultimate 'fuck these graphics, the gameplay is glorious' title.
I guess I tend to look at turn-based strategy as exactly that; I'm not after a realistic world simulation, but something more akin to a classic boardgame. And, as a man who has played 40k with Risk counters and rocks, I can get along with some really fucking janky looking boardgames.

I've been playing since 1994, when I got the first Civ game (SNES version). Civilzation III was also good. Speaking of board games, I always wanted to play the 1980 board game "Civilization". Supposedly, the game was not influenced by the board game. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_(1980_board_game)

Ive never played Civilization. Is it anything like Age of Empires 2? Nah, its more like a turn-based version of sim city, meets risk. Each civilization has its own unique abilities, with leaders that have unique qualities. Thus, you play by a strategy that best uses those strengths. Example, if you play as Mongols, their best strategy is total conquest; so you would focus on military. Or if you play as Korea, its better to focus on science to achieve specific victory conditions. Which is something the later iterations expanded upon more. While I get that it adds a certain dynamic to the game, I feel it also makes it kind of linear in a way. The game is mainly about strategy to achieve victory. I wish they made a game like Civilization, that was more like a simulator, with no clear objective. But I can get how that would be extremely difficult to program a game like that. I believe Age of Empire is more of a real-time strategy, like Warcraft, or Star Craft.

I was recently gifted a free download of Civilization IV, by Steam. I guess they plan on getting people to buy the DLC of Warlords, and Beyond the Sword. While I think it sucks that I own the physical copies of all of them, they are incompatible with Windows 10. I guess if its less than a $1, it would be worth the purchase. Right now there's -75% off on Total War: Rome II dlc.
