When I looked at the thumbnail, I thought the person who uploaded the video was implying that Sandy was the "snek". Glad that wasn't the case. I never really read up on Tim, so all of this stuff is new to me.

@themagicmushroomman I am glad you're back, please don't delete yourself again. Thanks man, deleting my account was stupid. Like you said in another thread, I have a habit of being a weathercock sometimes. Lately I've mostly been browsing through this place instead of DW. I like the idea of a smaller community where everybody knows one another. You guys have respect for each other even when disagreeing about something, which is one of the most important aspects of a community, right behind being able to voice your opinion without having to worry about that opinion getting deleted. Sometimes talking to the "high-tier" members of DW feels condescending, and there's nothing worse than a user who has developed a massive ego and disregards your opinion because you aren't "important" enough to hear out. Over here, with 40oz in charge, it doesn't feel that way. Even though 40oz has an extremely high reputation as a mapper, he shows respect to the people that took the time to join his forum. Doomkid is another one who doesn't talk down to "lowly" members, so it makes sense that he has an account here as well. Anyway, sorry for all the text, but I'm happy to be back.

Imagine saying sorry for providing ammo to use against DW Seriously though, I can confirm the second paragraph. The fact that they somehow feel "high tier" is already bad enough, and that had to do with the fact that almost all posts they make have a lot of likes. I'm glad this forum doesn't have any of that bullshit.

I'm glad this forum doesn't have any of that bullshit. The like system is another thing I don't care for. I just don't see the reason for it. The comments with the most likes are usually just the first comment on a thread, or as you said, a comment by a popular member. It is rare that the most helpful comments are the ones with the most likes. It just encourages users to respond with a snarky attitude or make a lame joke before someone else does so people will hit that supercharge button. The fact that there is a "reputation leaderboard" kind of reinforces this. The leaderboard usually is just a reflection of who posts the most, because those folks are going to have more likes than anyone else. This has nothing to do with the concept of reputation. To be honest, even discussing it feels silly!

To be honest, even discussing it feels silly! It's almost like reddit, where your reputation (known as karma on reddit) is denoted by the number of popular opinions you agree with and how many times you express it, and negative karma for unpopular opinions. Its aim may be to encourage good behavior(which it doesn't succeed at)but the fact that it also silences the unpopular opinion is what makes it suck, very badly. Reputation cannot be depicted by points tbh. If someone is actually reputable, you don't need a points system to show it. Bad behavior has its own problem, that is giving you a bad reputation. Also, I've seen numerable times that a probably popular member repeated a joke in the same thread and got more likes than the one who came up with it first. It's all about which "high tier" member gets it first rather than which member gets it first.

These things are just all popularity contests. A large percentage of people have their self esteem linked too intimately to how popular they are, which makes such systems, well, popular.
