Wow, I just figured how to make EDGE play midis with built-in Timidity as per instructions included in readme file. (Using www.doomworld.com/idgames/utils/sound_edit/8mbgmpat GUS patches). Hell, it beats other ports now!
The instructions also available online at: 3dfxdev.net/edgewiki/index.php?title=Use_Custom_Timidity_Patches To add to them, after making 8mbgmpat folder and dropping patches there, go and select "Music device: Timidity" in "Sound Options" menu and reload EDGE, that is exit and run again. Triumph!
