Big post lol
Look, one thing I can say with certainty is that you guys have two choices. You can value my opinion or not. It doesn't really matter to me if you think I have a final say in any of doomer boards community-related conflicts or if you think the doom community would be a better place without me or anyone else giving them to you. You're always free to form your own opinions without me giving them to you. For all im worth I'm human just like any of you. You can choose the things you think are right and the things that are wrong, and act accordingly.
What I know about myself is that I'm here because I like playing Doom and I like helping the growth of mapping communities to design and make good maps together. I like this for the overarching goal of making the experience of playing Doom fun and prosperous and enjoyable for one another. I feel like that's the right thing to do. So that's what I do.
I do know that I've been told I can be difficult to deal with and that's bad for the community. It's something I work on all the time.
How? Most people who are here generally have had the experience of having me comment very thoughtfully and positive towards themselves when I see them create and post a form of content that adds value to the doom community. Even when it's been commented on negatively by other people.
I'm often very patient with people who have very unkind things to say, often more patient than I think most people ought to be. Even in private, where said people or their friends aren't around to see me say it.
I almost consider the forums and discord to be a second or third game outside of doom. Even though its a place where we often talking about doom, you're not really 'playing' doom. Discord and forums are kind of a game of competition for attention. It's not the same thing and using it doesn't always mean you care about what's good for the doom community. You can be good for the doom community without using it at all too. But it's not doom. Likely in part because doom, the game, is a very solitary game that is often enjoyed in the isolation of a single player experience or mapping by yourself at your computer and trying to guess at what people unlike you expect to enjoy when they play a new doom wad. With exception to things like playing multiplayer, or streaming on twitch to an audience of one or more, doom is mostly solitary.
I'm kind of in the interest of doing things only if its value adds to the experience of being a hardcore classic doom fan in the year 2021. And over the years, I'm fairly certain my bar has gotten quite low for what I think adds to the community in a good way.
If one of the things that I can do that would add value to the experience of being a doom fan is to go out of my way to drag former members back kicking and screaming into doomer boards so I can actively populate these forums with people who have announced to the forum that they personally dislike sharing this community with people like me and the rest of these forums members by deleting their accounts and starting their own doomer boards lite project...?
Then yeah, I'd probably do that.
But... I personally don't have a lot of investment in making people who have left on their volition come back here and co-mingle with people who have not left. That doesn't seem to me like it would make doom a lot of fun for me or anyone, really. I want a community of people who are here because they actually like each other and can get along under the umbrella of a really fun 90s shooter game.
Id like to to know what some people here value about a doom community where people who don't like each other have to be here and talk to each other. Ive already tried with private messages with people asking directly what these angry words and gestures at me are about and usually it ends with me asking their opinion about it and it goes unanswered.
Finally, like I said, I am just a human like any of you are. If you really think having those guys back here in the doomer boards community is a good idea, then you can go find them and try to convince them to come back. As an admin, I won't block your attempts to do that. I'm just saying I don't personally think it would help me or anyone else enjoy doom better if they were here, so its not going to be me that's going to actively pursue that quest when they can't even talk to me a little bit about what's wrong. That's just not the kind of relationship I want to have with fellow doom fans.
