I think this should be a thing. For example, you can take the shareware version of doom, and embed it in HTML. I think it would be great if you could take something like Freedoom, apply a mod to it, and basically do just that.

The question maybe why? Well, you could reach a much broader audience, if they didn't have to install a source port, and a mod. People with busy lives don't have time to figure out esoteric shit for recreation. Plus is makes Doom mods more of a stand alone game, rather than just a mod. At least that's how I see it.

It being cool is reason enough to do it. Imagine, next step could be to load and play anything from idgames mirror, especially it can be made sort of instantaneous (because backed by mirror close to the web server with Doom game?), so you can try arbitrary wads before downloading them to see if they are actually fun to you.
Of course, copyright laws bullshit makes it hard to have nice things like I suggested.

Imagine you could play first few levels without any delays over web before downloading 1 Gb mod (Total Chaos is that big, for example).

I got the idea from playing Alien vs Predator for jaguar online. I remember seeing this game when it first came out, and never having any opportunity to play it. Now it's on tap like water. classicreload.com/jaguar-alien-vs-predator.html
