I barely kept track of doomworld this year, I'm happy for my man Doomkid winning. Welcome to the club heheheheh! The arbitrary code exploit kept my jaw on the floor for a solid few minutes. Crazy fuckin stuff. I wonder if they'll add this to chocolate doom. I should definitely make a map using that thing lol. No DBP mentions this year, I guess #16 was really that special. What attracted your attention this year? What do you agree/disagree with?

I can hardly remember playing anything that won this year except for Syringe. I really need to play Three is a Crowd though for sure.
Sure no DBP mentions but it's not like they're owed any <insert Doom community political intrigue here lel>. Unfortunately just because a lot of them are made and a lot of work goes into them doesn't mean that they're entitled to anything by the Cacowards committee, however much faith and authority you wish to place there because the real Cacowards were the friends we made along the way. Personally I do think they still deserve a mention as an impressive lineup of "coffee break mapsets" or whatever while projects that no one has even played and may never see the light of day get mentioned every year, heh. I suggest the use of more magentas and cyans in the color palette of future DBPs.
The DBPs don't need an outside source for validation, and neither do you fellow Doom Slayer because a believing heart is your magic!
Three is a Crowd is the only thing I'm looking to experience in full and I believe Joe recommended it to me as well. I also agree with Doomware. I don't have anything to necessarily disagree about but that's probably only because I haven't played them and only saw the screenshots and thought "yeah, that's par for the course."
EDIT: Also discrediting any winner sounds pretty rude, yeah

Oh yeah congrats Doomkid I gotta play your winning project too! Also interesting to note that a compilation of community project maps over several years (Antaresian Reliquary) won a cacoward.

I suggest the use of more magentas and cyans in the color palette of future DBPs. DBP: Cacoward Bait Edition. All maps must take place on floating islands in a void and have 1000+ enemies. Being able to beat your own map is optional. My thoughts (in case you couldn't tell) is that just like the Oscars, the judges have a favourite style. I'm sure these were the best maps of the year in that style, but it does seem like anything that's not in that style (neon slaughter or atmospheric storytelling) tends to get snubbed.

I take a look at the screenshots and they look good, certainly better than the last year

Thanks, DN.
Truth be told, I've never been a big fan of the "circular arenas + cyan = great success" formula either - mainly because it's been done to death since the release of Ancient Aliens - but I don't really think it's all that prominent, it only describes 2 of the 10 winners, and even then those 2 wads are still gorgeous and clearly lovingly crafted (I never played BB's map, but even though I got chugging framerates, I did have fun with Ar Luminae). If anything, I feel the oversaturation of bright colors and circles is finally starting to fall out of vogue, and reach that nice level where there's an equal amount of maps in that style, and maps in all the other various styles. For every newschool mapset with fancy colors, there seems to be at least 2 mapsets that are more in the oldschool (or at least "more traditionally doomy" vein).
EDIT: For some reason that quote got mangled, no idea why..

This is absolutely golden lol, straight fax too. You forgot to mention that there has to be at least 40 MB worth of textures in that bitch too and that every MIDI has to be composed by a DW member with a post count of at least 2000. EDIT: For some reason that quote got mangled, no idea why.. Gay ass proboards engine messes up quotes when you select them by double clicking text and click the little pop-up. You have to click and draaaaag like a granny for it to look proper.

My thoughts (in case you couldn't tell) is that just like the Oscars, the judges have a favourite style. I'm sure these were the best maps of the year in that style, but it does seem like anything that's not in that style (neon slaughter or atmospheric storytelling) tends to get snubbed. Heh, from what I know of the judges the picks are more or less in line of what I could expect to be in their taste. But it's fine, in the end the cacowards are a subjective list of a few people favourites and if anything I think the over-serious and professional feel they try to give is starting to clash a bit too much. Previous cacowards were better because they had a better balance of that.
This year the picks were barely interesting to me for the most. I'm also part of the club that doesn't like the rainbow neon maps and even worse if they are filled with copypasted stuff, ugh, not my kind of Doom. Then it's already a good while since I got tired of the Sunder/Sunlust copycats maps. 3IAC seems interesting and it's from a while that I wanted to try it. 180 Minutes pour Vivre I still need to play it but I liked the previous wads of the series from the French community. Running Late 2 and Rowdy Rudy 2 (and the first one that I still have to play, sorry Doomkid ) are the other picks I'm interested to play.

@gaspe I'd also suggest Gods&Guardians, Hadron E3 (if you're okay with UD stuff), Syringe, 25 Years, and Faithless (if you like Heretic/Hexen) would be worth your attention, potentially. The others...yeah, they likely fall into that other category you mentioned, in one way or many...

I thought briefly of streaming myself playing some of these cacoward winners. I'm glad I didnt because I was not having much fun, and ended up saying some pretty mean things that I'd probably need to explain later.
I started with what looked the coolest to me. Every winner and runner up I hoped I would like really annoyed me. I ended up quitting before completing all of the ones I played. Some of the wads didn't even hold my attention for more than three minutes.
Good gameplay must have a double meaning over at doomworld. I don't see the general Doom player base liking a lot of these winners at all. There's a lot of celebration over the amount of time and effort and attention to detail some of these mappers put into their work, but a lot of it is just shiny glossy finish on what is either grindy, doesnt have enough items, is confusing to explore, or is intentionally designed to kill you (usually more than one of these things.)
There's a lot of love in the doom community for sure. You need a tugboat to get through the monsoon of heart reacts some of these wads are drenched in. But I'd be curious to watch the average Doom player play them on stream and watch their real live reactions as they play some of this. I watch this very carefully when I watch people play our DBPs. You can tell players are having fun with pure bliss of natural refined Doom monster shooting. You can see it in people's reactions when they stream themselves playing it. The things I've seen people rage at in our DBPs are far inferior to multi-stacked megaphone loudness of the fun-neglecting level design choices I experienced tonight. Outside of the occasional bugs, I rarely ever see players get frustrated with our DBPs and they're always engaged. If any of you guys made some of these cacoward-winning maps for DBP, you'd have some serious notes to address.
I'll have to go back and play some of the less shiny ultr-a-fabulous ones but I hate when Doom isn't fun and I need a break.

It'd be hard to make any meaningful changes based on vague remarks about the wads, streaming it maybe would have been a good idea because - even if you'd get some hate - I'd be able to see what maps in what wads bored/frustrated you so much, additionally it may have helped players to adjust their expectations accordingly and mappers to have seen what decisions they made lacked appeal for you. Which wads exactly had you bored in less than 3 minutes?
That's moronic, but thanks for letting me know! (the irony of using a bad quote to quote this. I know for next time at least..)
