System of a Down is one of my favorite bands of all time but they've been on an unnoficial hiatus for a million years. Recently they just released two new singles, and well... they're not great.
It's supposed to be big news that the band is getting back together, but it's actually some stinky old shit under a wet blanket. The reason these seriously talented fucks are not making music together is because of an unresolved conflict between frontman Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian. There's been a problem between equal creative input on the direction the band is going. Usually they would split up the songs they want to do on each album, but in the last album Malakian was writing just about all the songs and therefore collecting all the royalties on the music. Tankian and Malakian can't seem to come to an agreement on how to go about this so they've since split up and worked on their own solo projects. Serj has his own thing now, and Malakian has a new band called Scars On Broadway. Neither of which are especially amazing.
As it turns out, these two new hits Genocidal Humanoidz and Protect The Land were originally Malakian's works in progress for Scars On Broadway. Malakian made an agreement with the other System of a Down members to perform his songs under the condition that all profits would go to the Armenian Fund. That's how he was able to get them to perform his music under the System of a Down label. It's just marketing.
I can almost tell that Tankian's heart wasn't in it, as he's doing what sounds like some backup vocals on the tracks, with Malakian doing the lead singing. It also doesn't sound like anything system of a down would have come up with together. It's pretty lame IMO and Daron Malakian is kind of a tool.
