Playing doom without changing weapons

I recently set up my tablet and cell phone to play Doom using a gamepad, and while I was setting up the controls I haven't yet figured out how to make button assignments to numbers on the keyboard, so I got all my controls set up except being able to change weapons, which accidentally gave me this fun new challenge.
In Doom, the player autoswitches to a new weapon on pickup. So whatever the weapon is that you pickup is the one you have to use. You're stuck with it until you run out of ammo and autoswitch to your next best weapon.
It's a little frustrating at first until I realized you can control your ammo switches a little bit if you strategically avoid ammo pickups to keep your ammo inventory low.
For example imagine you're playing a familiar map and you know there's a hell knight coming up in the next room plus some sniping imps in the distance. If you have your super shotgun out, you might want to go in there with 6 shells so you can take out the hell knight first. Then once you use up your shells, you autoswitch to the chaingun which you can use to get the imps. If you keep yourself around 50 bullets or less, you won't have to use the chaingun for very long. But you want to make sure you pick up some shotgun shells you left behind before you empty your chaingun so you don't autoswitch to your rocket launcher and get stuck with it!
Also if you pick up a chainsaw or berserk pack you're fucked until you find a new weapon you don't have yet.
It requires a bit more thinking ahead than you normally would in Doom. It helps to know Dooms weapon priorities so you can autoswitch to the weapons you want when you need them. It's good to play familiar maps that are non-linear and generous with ammo pickups for this reason. It's a lot of fun to pick and choose different routes depending on what weapon you have equipped, and generous ammo pickups are good in case you get stuck emptying all your ammo out on a weapon you don't need yet.
