www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=18620.0This just got released. I guess it's the metroid equivalent of a TC for vanilla doom. I'm probably about an hour or so into it so not much else to report. The engine has really been pushed by the looks of things and the automap sucks balls. Like, serious and complete balls. I know that the original metriod didn't have an automap, but honestly, I was five years old back then and could *afford* to piss my life way getting lost in a fucking brinstar. I love the 2D metriod games, I really do, but urgh, I forgot how annoying it was to be stuck at a dead end with no idea of where to go next.

Ive never played any of the metroid games. The animated screenshot with the rain drops is pretty nice pixel porn though.

It's a genuinely cool and pretty little game. I know a little about the limitations of the metroid engine, vertical v.s horizontal scrolling etc, and the way you guys worked around those limitations is genuinely clever.
I'm having a blast playing it.
Maybe you're not the person to ask, but was it designed with speed-running in mind?

I feel like a fool for not knowing that the original Metroid didn't have an automap. I guess I was spoiled by Super Metroid. But nevertheless I think I will be playing this. I love a good challenge.

Well, mission complete. 7 hours, 92% of items.
It's good, but it's not the home run everyone is claiming it to be. There are a couple of minor niggles that mean jack squat in the grand scheme of things, but there is one glaring gameplay problem that really stops this mod from being 'The One'.
There are many, MANY highly annoying warp traps. In several sections if you go the wrong way you are teleported back to the start of the section. No reason, no explanation.
It's the same bullshit that was pulled during the last level of the original Super Mario where you have to select which path to go down in Bowser's final castle, but seven magnitudes worse. What we have here is a Metroid game that actively punishes you for exploring certain sections.
A real shame.

Metroid was one of those games that escaped my attention when I was young because I never upgraded from an NES to a SNES as my parents wouldn't let me, so I was stuck playing Mario when all the cool kids were playing better platformers haha. Although I was able to go back and play the entire Castlevania series I still need to visit this franchise.
Anyway, visually this looks great, and I'm guessing that's a custom character as well.. I love Metroidvanias for their exploration so that's an odd and disappointing thing to see.. getting punished for exploring..
Hey dn have you tried out Axiom Verge? It's very impressive for a one man project, the pixel art is so beautiful it makes my eyes want to explode and the surreal imagery and atmosphere is amazing. You might like it. :>
