I am excited to announce the release of Aliens: Eradication (RC1), an 8 map action/survival game, designed for use with Kontra Kommando's Aliens Trilogy (Payload edition) mod on GZDoom. MOD and MAPSET included in zip. FEATURES: 1. Four unique player classes with there own stories, enemy encounters, item placement, side/bonus missions, and even some maps exclusive to the class you have chosen to play. 2. Weapons and enemies from the Aliens Trilogy PS1 game, the Aliens films and more. 3. Play the single player, 8 map campaign or load up the mod with your favorite iwad or pwad to give them the "Alien treatment". Works with most Doom and Doom2 wads (not tested with other mods). 4. Deploy auto turrets and drones (class specific) to set traps or create defensive choke points. 5. Take advantage of environmental hazards (fire and electricity) to help even the odds. HOW TO PLAY/ TESTED WITH: GZDOOM and the DOOM 2 iwad. Load the pk3 file before the wad file. The Eradication map set (wad) must be loaded with the Alien Trilogy mod (pk3) included in the zip file. Tested with: GZDOOM 3.7.2, GZDoom4.2.1. Best played in "DARK" sector light mode in DISPLAY settings. If pop up text is too small/big, set the hud scaling options to "adapt to screen size" in HUD options. ALL DIFFICULTY SETTINGS AVAILABLE. THE CLASSES: The Colonist: Evade hordes of aliens, saving as many fellow colonist as you can, along the way. Once found, they can be ordered to follow you or stand in place to guard an area. The colonist is vulnerable to the face huggers attack. If they get close, run (don't walk) and they will likely miss their initial attack. If they are allowed to linger at your feet they will insta-kill you. The Mercenary: Raid the colony as a space-faring pirate, intent on obtaining valuable research and materials from the site. The constant rumors about alien genetics and ground breaking weaponology have peaked your groups interest in the new colony on LV426. The Mercenary is vulnerable to the face huggers attack. If they get close, run (don't walk) and they will likely miss their initial attack. If they are allowed to linger at your feet they will insta-kill you. The Yutani-Operative: As a member of the Special Operations Force (a Japanese arm of the Weyland/Yutani corp) you are tasked with wiping the site clean. All human witnesses must be eliminated. Other members of your team will collect genetic samples and possibly live specimens of the known Xeno elements. Full body armor and a helmet protect the Operative from face huggers, but beware of their acid blood. The Combat Synthetic: You are a security asset for the colony, activated in emergency situations. The colony's systems are disabled when a band of mercs assault the site and, as a result, release the specimens in the labs. Now you must destroy all Xeno elements. Face huggers recognize that the Combat Synth is not "alive" and, therefore, will abort its attempt to impregnate it. DOWNLOAD LINK: ALIENS: ERADICATION v1

I'm keen to play this but the flashlight doesn't work for me, which makes it almost impossible to get anywhere. My command line looks like this: gzdoom -iwad ~/games/doom/doom2.wad -file KKALIENTRILOGLYPAYLDEDRC1RELEASE.pk3 ALIENSERADICATIONRC1RELEASE.wad /opt/gzdoom/lights.pk3 ini here: pastebin.com/hASkytugDynamic lights from eg. flares work so if anyone knows what might be happening I'd love to give this a proper go!

The flashlight uses a spotlight so it is not supported in some earlier builds of GZDoom. I believe you need v3.7.2 or higher although I have yet to test it with anything beyond v4.2.1. What version of gzdoom are you using?

4.3.3, the most recent stable release. I'll try 4.2.1 now just in case, there are old builds on the GZDoom github. Thanks!

No luck unfortunately, just using the default settings this time. It must have something to do with my computer (an AMD graphics problem? I'm using the open source drivers on Linux), so I'll probably have to ask Graf about this one.

Well, I just downloaded and tried 4.3.3 and it worked for me. Check the flashlight settings in the options menu also and make sure to check the key bind.

I hope you can get it to work.

I've booted the game, looks great, although I didn't quite anticipate the extent of the conversion. Looks like it's the game with its own mechanics?
I'm trying to figure out how to leave the starting room. For now, I managed to blow myself up after switching away from pistol.
EDIT: Figured that out, but the game is dark and hard. Definitely going to check gameplays with iwads to help myself familiarize with the game, it is really different.

Cool. It's definitely not intended to be a Trilogy remake or anything. It just uses assets from it. I wanted to make the kind of game mechanics that I enjoy. Really just my take on an aliens game. The flashlight can be adjusted in a number of ways in the options menu. You can set it anywhere from dim and spooky to light it up. I would recommend "Lots of Aliens" difficulty for new starts. I didn't skimp on attention to enemy encounters even on the easy settings.

I read from Doomworld's thread you don't actually recommend playing blind as the Colonist, although that's the first class to choose so I went with it. I did bind and use the flashlight by the way, didn't think it was adjustable though. I already got killed at least once (I think more) by facehuggers and managed to blow up myself another time when trying to clear elevator (? i didn't actually press any buttons yet) from boxes. Still, I am making progress. Didn't find how to release the yellow key yet, although I did see it.

Thanks for checking it out. The weapons and enemies do have a slight learning curve if one is expecting Doom type gameplay, that's for sure. You'll get it quickly, though and then you'll be running around throwing satchel charges and killing groups of Xenos with ease. Utilize turrets... they are essential at times. Try the alt fires.
Playing as a different class is...well...different too. Try other classes if your not digging the one you picked.
I'm asking for feedback like this to fine tune (or majorly overhaul...lol) for future releases, so thank you.

You got it right, I expected Doom gameplay, but I see that one simply doesn't get near enemies corpses for a while. Reminds me of Doom 3 a bit, the way it is centered around horror and lethal close encounters from the early on. Except the first time I played Doom 3, it took forever before the actual game started (when I met first enemy), which really sucked.
I've found the yellow card (I've found blue and red before it, found a secret), but didn't expect I would be locked in. Once I was locked in and the enemies was spawning, I thought about deploying a turret (I have done so before), but too late. Got facehugged. But I think this is OK, as I got killed in Doom 3 a lot too (could never understand its shotgun).
I guess the game does make a fair point that one should use saves (rather than starting easy and then betraying player's feelings by turning to hard), I am already using them, because enemies are fast. For someone that never uses saves, well, they will not get far before giving up, since there is a learning curve indeed.
As for introducing game to the player, I think you are doing fine, although I miss the background music. I, for instance, had ragequit Total Chaos, or how that insane total conversion was called, because the only weapon I found broke after first combat (and at first attempt, it broke halfway through, and I was no longer able to fight the still living enemy), then I could never find any weapon, then finally walked weaponless into swarm of enemies. That was total bullshit, on top of not having any difficulty settings and no introduction to intricate mechanics of using food and all the rest of stuff. So I quit it and won't recommend that wad (Total Chaos) to anyone. And that wad won a fucking cacoward - I would take any newbie's first map over that wad and play it repeatedly, actually. On the other hand, in your mod I can make meaningful progress and the mechanics are not, in fact, hard to learn, it's just surprise ambushes are killing me, since I've not yet worked the key bindings into my muscle memory.
In fact, the biggest issue so far is that I can't really adjust myself to lack of background music, although it may be tricky for it to work in this setting. Unloved and Shadows of The Nightmare Realm had background music, maybe that's something to think about.

The music track is used for ambience and such (wind outside, machinery droning inside, etc.) but it will cut in with music (usually before an attack) so turn the music volume up. And if you just want background music, press the M key (check binding in options) and you can cycle through a bunch of Trilogy music and others. This music may be superseded by some event triggers in the Eradication mapset which would reset to the ambient tracks.
I think you are right on with the Doom3 horror aspect. It only makes sense for an alien game. Gotta have that dread. I also take inspiration from games like System Shock 1 and 2, because I just love them.

Here are some tips I'm compiling for a pdf manual.
*ALL DIFFICULTY SETTINGS ARE AVAILABLE* - play on "A Few Aliens" for a more "Isolation" feel all the way up to "Hordes Of Aliens" for an extreme challenge.
IF PLAYING AS A COLONIST:
-Not recommended for a blind playthrough. -This is a survival style class where the player faces challenges of resource management, minimal starting equipment, lack of armour and auto turrets. -Heavy exploration is required to find weapons and items. Search areas thoroughly before moving to the next. -Friendly NPCs can help in a gunfight but are not crucial to the gameplay. (they do not count towards the "monster count") -Friendly NPCs can be told to stand in place or follow you by pressing use on them. -Use fire and electrical hazards to destroy incoming xenos. Be careful though. -If all you have is a pistol, you can lure an enemy to burst through a vent cover, allowing you access to the vent system. -If you are lucky, an NPC will drop a red key card upon death (but not if you grenade them), allowing access to storage rooms. The card can also be found in a secret.
IF PLAYING AS A MERCENARY: -Place your turrets wisely and protect them. The xenos will destroy them quickly if surounded. Some situations can required multiple turrets. -Collecting INTEL folders in the map will allow you access to the exit or other areas (depending on the map). They are placed at randomn spots. -"Use short, controlled bursts" with your pulse rifle to conserve ammo.
IF PLAYING AS A YUTANI-OPERATIVE: -Your mission is to kill all colonist and mercenaries in the level. This will allow access to the exit. -The flamethrower is best used on xenos and the pulse rifle on humans. But they will both do the job. -Use cover tactics against the humans who, unlike early alien enemies, have a ranged attack. -If you are lucky, a colonist or mercenary will drop a red key card upon death (but not if you grenade them), allowing access to storage rooms. The card can also be found in a secret.
IF PLAYING AS A COMBAT SYNTHETIC: -Med kits will not work for the synths. They must find repair/replacement stations (use auto map and look for red crosses). So watch your health closely. -The auto mode for the smart gun works by holding down the fire button and placing the crosshairs near your target. Press the alt fire to switch to manual. -Save the smartgun for larger engagements to conserve ammo.

A little question: does pistol ever run out of ammo?

I think I'll put a message at the beginning of play for the Colonist, warning players that it is not recommended for first playthrough.

I would suggest a different ordering for classes, as people who are not accustomed to choose classes will choose whichever is first, probably. Or at least I did it this way. Currently, the Colonist is the first.

That's a solid idea. As they are now, they're listed from weakest to strongest class, roughly. Admittedly, that isn't apparent to people new to the game.

Payload should be Cacoward mapper of the year! This is the best Aliens mod, hands down.

Could not have done it without you bro. You got a lot of work in this too, no matter how long you've been "retired"...haha... It is truly built on past work from so many people, I'm just happy to put my spin on it. It was a fun project.
