I confused Espi for Essel and got excited. And then disappointed. I then looked into what Essel has been up to lately to find he's become a (content removed) weeaboo. What time to be alive.

There's essentially three evolutions for long-time Doom community people evidently; (content removed) weeaboo, metalhead libertine who opposes nothing and has no opinion, dry condescending technocrat douchebag. 

Make that four. Surely the whole lot of us compelled to watch those other trainwrecks are an evolution of our own. I suppose it's like outrage porn, but there's a more personal element to it and over the long run you don't want to yell at the idiots as much as look in shock.

Just today I read a post by Linguica ranting about the evil capitalists who trick you into the belief you should feel bad for participating in society - a literal talking point which must be now well over 10 years old and is only ever used by upper middle class types who have experienced for their whole life a level of financial comfort less than 1% of the world will ever taste. You cannot get mad at that anymore than you'd be upset at someone who rants about Microsoft in 2020, complete with a dollar sign for the S. It's more like... Dude. It's been *that* long. Where's the intellectual growth?

It's this feeling of stagnation, it becomes staring at the abyss. There's no change, no progress, just a black hole of nothingness and you can't turn your eyes away. I'm not even sure what I get from this seasonal Doomworld EE trip. It's not anger porn. It's not vindication from looking at the "losers" and feeling comparatively better about oneself. It's not laughing at them, either.

No, that's the thing... They're not ridiculous, nor are they freaks - even the ones pretending to be women, I'd bet most just live the fantasy on the Internet and haven't done drastic things to themselves. But they were people we could talk to once as fellow human beings and recognize as such, even if we thought their opinions were shitass retarded. And now they're these weird nonpeople fixed in time, blabbering empty things for no discernable purpose.

There's a 1960 play by Ionesco called Rhinoceros. Holy pompous bullshit batman, talking about a play in a doom forum. Still, it fits the dynamic. The tale takes place in a town where people start turning into rhinoceros one by one, and grow from outrage at the prospect to acceptance of the situation and then overt approval. It was meant to denounce totalitarian regimes and the way people behave to let them happen. Repeating the same vapid mantra, collecting aphorisms and gotchas to avoid thinking.

(In a weirdly appropriate twist, the English version of the wikipedia page puts a heavy accent on a supposedly intended denounciation of Nazism in particular, and somewhat downplays the extent to which it was a criticism of communism)

Shit, I don't have a point. Nobody cares about capitalism vs communism, the real divide lies between thinking and nonthinking. It's scarier to find out someone you were pretty sure was a thinker once upon a time turned into this odd entity which emits the same sounds/words and looks the same way but is now conclusively not capable of thought. A machine with great mechanical intelligence still, just not reflection. If there's such a thing as the soul, then soulless is the best way to describe it. So... Not anger, not laughter, not vindication. Perhaps just plain horror. Come to think of it, I don't watch horror movies, so I guess DW feeds that need.
