The other genre of games that I like are 4Xes (Doom's a genre right?). Anyway the best 4X is MOO1 for it's pure strategic gameplay with very little micro and there's a pretty nice reimplementation out now called.... dominus galaxia.
Anyway I'm shilling for this game because the demo is great shit:
starchart-interactive.itch.io/dominus-galaxia
and there's a kickstarter which I backed and which looks kinda iffy on whether it's gonna succeed or not, and I want it to succeed, so here's a link in case anybody else enjoys this kind of thing:

check it out if you like conquering the galaxy and stuff.
If you haven't played Master of Orion here's some other links of interest:
MOO1 and 2 on GOG
(MOO2 adds a lot of Civ-type stuff to MOO1 and loses the glorious elegance of the first one. Still a rad game but feels more dated because that sort of gameplay has been iterated more over the years)
1oom is the Chocolate Doom of MOO; a bugs and all reimplementation (although no source was ever released, so more of a reverse engineering effort)
Remnants of the Precursors is a semi-official remake of MOO1, apparently with the blessing of the rightsholders; last time I played it was a while ago and was turned off due to the fact the dude paid for a lot of excellent art and then used awful scaling effects and the animations used had no more frames than MOO1s despite the much higher fidelity, making them look much much worse. Also looks like development has slowed right down if not stopped.
man if I had a youtube channel I'd get paid to make these kinds of posts. What sort of chump does this for free?
