Doom's great, but there's still some things to be desired, it is imperfect and it's impossible to make something perfect-perfect, but it is always possible to lean into perfection.
I would perfect Doom by extending the deadline of the first Doom game for at least another year, that way ID won't have to force poor ol' Sandy to make dozens of rushed maps in a deadline that makes no sense, that way ID can spend a little more time looking for more level designers like MCGee and Shawn while letting Romero make more maps and let Sandy refine a smaller but more coherent pool of maps. The deadline extension would also allow the Doom 2 enemies that were scrapped from Doom to be implemented and also the SSG and maybe allow the company to make the 4th episode at the same time too.
It could be a really neat combination of Doom and its sequel that way.

Doom was perfect as it was, you can't blow your whole "creative load" in one go so to speak. I think Doom2 could have done with longer in the oven, even just a little bit - If they had added freelook and raised a few other limitations, maybe cleaned up some of the texturing, that would have been awesome. It was still a good expansion on Doom though, with all the new enemies and the SSG.
I would have loved just like 5-10 stock deathmatch maps too, that would have been awesome. idmap01 is dated, but in terms of general size/design approach it was way ahead of it's time. It was pretty much the first thing that we nowadays would think of as a duel map. If there was a couple more and they came bundled with doom2, they would be the "official" deathmatch and duel maps, and that would be kinda awesome.

- Have more textures that aren't brown in Doom 2 and including my favorite combo of BROVINE from Doom 1.
- Provide some new sounds for each monster that is lacking in unique sounds.
- Have the BFG function where the death rays come from the projectile's line-of-sight and not the player like in Doom 3 and 4.
- Fixing all the minor errors with the vanilla game sprites.

But also I'd add something like a rifle with 100% accuracy and a medium fire rate to replace the pistol to make it more viable and to contrast I would make the chaingun faster and a little less accurate (eliminating the two tap trick and negatively effecting range but also buffing the close quarters and crowd control advantage).

Probably by making something like duke nukem. I'd argue that would lower the quality, at least gameplay wise. Doom is a lot more fun than Duke3D as is, without the superficial interactivity. Really the only thing I would do is make the weapons a bit more interesting and give the combat more depth, kind of like Quake. Also give McGee and Romero more levels, and cut out half of Sandy's maps.

- Reduce lost soul energy, maybe about 1 shotgun blast (console doom ports do this already actually and it's just about right) - Have a real final boss for Doom 2 MAP30. I always hated the Icon of Sin and that it's a matter of timing. - Maybe Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind energy should swap. Spider Mastermind for a final boss is much easier, a close up BFG blast just kills it if you can get it. Too lame for a final boss. Cyberdemon is more deadly and scary and harder to kill (this is the one everybody remembers).

doom 1: -replace really ugly maps from E2 and E3 -a new enemy maybe, baron of hell is just an harmless thing that takes forever to kill, lost soul is boring and cyberdemon and mastermind are too overkill
doom 2: -replace easy-listening songs with metal or moody tracks on the style of doom 1 -almost all levels need a visual tune-up or at least to have more texture variety

Nerf Lost Soul, nerf ssg, less annoying chainsaw and plasma sounds, improve Mastermind and maybe Baron of Hell
It's pretty good as it is though

What would make the Doom franchise 'perfect' for me would be better expansion packs. I wouldn't touch the iwads or add anything to the core bestiary/armory but more expansive official wads would be great - stuff like Life's a Beach but for Doom.

Well perfect Doom IS Heretic but let's just shove that aside for a momment. I'd give Sandy time to tweak all his maps, add the ability to make the pistol shoot as fast as you can click, buff the chaingun a tiny bit in Doom 2, remove some limits like infinite height monsters, maybe an expanded bestiary filling up some niches and not to forget some better textures

Doom 1 and Doom 2 with the current graphical quality and 2D sprites, but with actual optimized non- hacked up official ID software way of having room over room and a few more textures.

Not that franchise is really important in Doom, but I think it could be improved by choice-driven plot. And Im not talking about choices like in Doom 3 (send transmission to earth or no -> if you dont send Betruger will send it for you, no effect), but choices you take that impact your journey through the game -> will it be cinematics different ending, different map, path, boss, anything that could give you the feeling that you are in control of your faith rather than following the "desired" path. Simple choice would be to:
a) follow, obey and do what hayden says b) do not follow, obey and do what hayden says c) do on the contrary what hayden says and smash everything to bits
Choice -> effect, with amazing gameplay as Doom has, it would be delight to pass it again

Instead of lowering the quality of the SFX, remove useless images, Doom resources from Doom II and vice versa. And add other things that might fit in as well, stuff like unique sounds for lacking enemies or something.
