Original post:
I would have posted this on the zdoom forums but I can't for reasons I won't get into.
Anyway, with the rise of Brutal Doom many new people were flooded into the Doom modding community which is cool. Unfortunately, many people (well most in fact) don't know how to code which means that so far most of the new modders (and a large chunk of experienced ones) are currently limited to only making simple levels and don't want to touch the more exotic stuff such as making their own actors (custom enemies, weapons etc) or the powerful level scripting known an ACS. Many also find it confusing how to create mapinfo/gameinfo code to determine level progression, or how to add new custom graphics such as textures and materials.
Enter Doom Maker.....
The idea behind Doom maker is basically that you can use a simple gui interface to create code (decorate, texture and material definitions, mapinfo etc, and later, possibly zscript) without having to actually know any coding. You will still need to understand certain doom editing concepts however, but nothing insanely difficult or complicated. The idea basically is that you take the printed code and copy/paste it into the wad editing program you are using such as Slade. I am still in the early stages of making the program but I already have a simple mapinfo creator working and am currently working on the early stages of a monster creator.
List of things Doom Maker will be able to make:
-Mapinfo&Gameinfo
-Texture definitions
-Material definitions
-Custom decorate actors such as monsters, weapons, props etc
-ACS level scripting
-POSSIBLY custom menus but that's not promised
What do you think? Do you think there might be demand for this kind of app in the zdoom/doom modding community?
