"Finished"* it a while ago, saw a little bit of anime from 1997 and 2016. Was good. Let's go.
SUMMARY:
"Berserk" is a long running*, epic semi-fantasy manga that has over 358 chapters, and is still going!* Story follows a young but strong warrior aptly named "Guts" who will be tearing through them all through the series with his iconic Dragonslayer, or depending on the arcs, a really loooong sword. During his career as a lonely swordsman in the medieval Midland, he runs and (involuntarily) joins a mercenary warband called "Band of the Hawk", led by a certain charismatic fellow called Griffith, and judging by the first arc of the manga, we can assume how his mercenary career will end up like. Drawn by a mangaka(living god) going by Kentaro Miura, the art is simply breath-taking and amazing, often portraying large scenes, such as armies, down unto the smallest detail, the soldier on the far end of a formation will still be recognizable as the nearest bloke. Not to mention, historical accuracy (at least where realistical elements still take place), techniques used to portray them and all in between, is worth being envious. With all these amazing illustrations, storylines and characters, one probably thinks he should forgive the author for taking so long to release a new chapter.*
PROS:
- Amazing artwork. If it's pure action scenes, or still images of landscapes, Miura-sensei gotcha fam.
PROS:
- Amazing artwork. If it's pure action scenes, or still images of landscapes, Miura-sensei gotcha fam.
- Engaging storyline and characters.
- Food for thought as well.
- You won't look less manly for reading this (might even teach you a thing or two).
CONS:
- Gratitious amounts of gore, rape also pop ups here and there (this is more of a warning I guess)
- It takes a while for the new chapter to come out.*
- Anime adaptations are not as complete.
CONCLUSION:
Not much can I say without sounding like a salesman. I really dig this, and I recommend everybody (who can handle gore and occasional rape (mentions or acts)) to find time and read it up. It's just as great, heck, hangs out in the same booth as "Fist of the North Star" and "Jojo's Bizzare Adventure". Worried bout weebs and samurais? No weeb shit here. Just got out of GoT or something similar? Gotchu fam. Wanna watch the anime? If you gonna, start from the 1997 anime, Episode 2. Episode 1 doesn't make sense without reading the manga. The 2016 one? People give it shit for animation but it is the only animated piece of medium regarding the post-"Golden Age" stuff.
10/10 Amazing. Simply delicious.
* Hiatuses. Author is taking em like pills, last forever, fans don't like them.
