Todd Glass is one of my favorite comedians, fuckin hilarious guy. I managed to catch him on a few podcasts where they kinda glossed over some details about his life that I thought would ordinarily be a pretty huge deal. It was mentioned in passing that he's a gay man and that was news to me. I had to do a bit of research to check that they hadn't mispoke but there was a pretty epic moment in 2012 where he set up a podcast with comedian Marc Maron to come out as gay at the age of 47.
I'm not really bringing this up as news, because its not, rather theres something in here that is really well said to me. Being a part of this forum, we talk a lot about how fucking stupid the progressive left is when it so happens that some people use its momentum as a vehicle to bully people into submission. There's a lot of stupidity on the right too, clinging on to old ideas and traditions that happen to be built on the ideas of people who aren't very well-adjusted to today's society. All in all, politics and labels are fucking stupid in general unless you can change someone's mind with it.
I do check out news from both sides of the political spectrum in order to be best informed, but I think it shows that I appear to have a lack of empathy for the left. This is because it has become difficult for me to find anything related to social changes that don't rely so heavily on emotional appeal. Games and movies originally designed for men are getting rebooted with a new feminine flair, things get covered in pink and rainbows, talking about inclusivity and safety and open-mindedness then switching passionately to civil liberties and oppression where no argument was taking place. I think I have an aversion to the cuteness of it all.
Todd Glass is not that kind of person. He tells his story on this great interview. For 25 years he had been setting up jokes based on true stories where he was talking to "his girlfriend" which were actually men he had been dating. He's been extremely calculated and careful about exposing this aspect of his life except with some very close friends. It's been incredibly difficult and uncomfortable to come out in public because he didn't know how to keep people from making a huge deal about it. He talks very openly about his life in this interview. I was particularly impressed on how well he articulates the difficulty of it and not taking the role of a victim who needs a pity party, which too many people fall into.
It's been a long time since I've heard someone speak about this kind of stuff in a way that makes sense to me. If you guys have been feeling like the left is full of shit, I really think there's something here in this interview that might resonate with you.
Also check out his standup special on netflix "Act Happy," He does a really fucking awesome performance and goes on a rant about this kind of stuff at the end that had me completely self-evaluating. It's fuckin good shit, man.
