The anime industry is in a pretty horrible state financially. Animators are working under minimum wage, many of them get to sleep only a couple of hours per day, some die or seriously damage their health as a result. There was a nice boom in mid 2000's when DVDs became widespread and allowed some of the most expensive and critically acclaimed series to be made. But everything went down the shitter after increased internet speeds and p2p networks made piracy so accessible.
Are you doing anything to help the industry? Do you have a shelf dedicated to licensed manga? Are you subscribed to Crunchyroll? What could make you spend more money on anime and manga?

I would've paid for anime if it was actually legally accessible for me. The only way for me to legally obtain a copy is to order a DVD from eBay/somewhere else, but 1) ordering a DVD is pretty expensive (atleast to me) and time-consuming, and 2) I'd only order something when I know it's good, but how would I know if it's good without watching it? I don't rely on reviews, because they're very subjective and the opinions there usually don't match mine. So, for now, I pirate, but in the future I may buy DVDs of anime I liked. (I've already bought one box set, actually)

Woah, I had no clue this is how bad the situation is in the industry. Must be living under a rock if this is true...
Either way, I would probably buy manga if it wasn't so expensive (or it could just be the fact that I'm always bankrupt), but I see no point for anime since I don't have a blu ray player and DVDs are terrible. Unfortunately, at least for now I'll stick to websites such as 9anime and mangarock...

Am I the only one who thinks of another industry when reading the comments above mine? Heh.

I do buy some stuff, from DVDs (which are the "best" method to support anime studios) to manga and light novels, also recently I bought my first figure. I only use one streaming site but only because it's free, but thus with ads ugh. Personally I don't like to watch on streaming, mostly I never had a very fast internet, and I like to rewatch scenes from episodes so I prefer to have copies that I can watch freely. Piracy is a thorny topic, there are people who take it as a moral battle yet it's hard (if not impossible) to demonstrate that piracy actually harms sales. I think that the sharing of content helps to create new enthusiasts and in the long run there will be more people willing to support the industry. In the specific case of anime that made possible to watch series that otherwise we would never have known. For anime studios the main source of income are still DVDs and other merchandise sales and the main market is Japan, it's a bit of an issue to support the industry as foreigners. For manga and books I guess the whole thing is more direct. What could make you spend more money on anime and manga? I would gladly donate money to anime studios if I could do that directly.
You were living under a mangarock. What are you doing here joe-ILLYA?
