REKKR is a vanilla-compatible medieval themed total conversion for doom.wad. The majority of it was made by Revae, with sounds provided by TerminusEst13, music composed by Tom Jensen, and a few guest levels designed by experienced mappers including our good friends MegaPancakeStrategist and xeepeep. It features a rich new fantasy world with many unique environments and mechanics to get accustomed to. Follow the link above to see more screenshots and download this impressive work of art.

Good shit! Not the type of thing I would normally seek out, but a MegaPancakeStrategist map is worth the price of admission alone.

Very cool! I was invited to help map for this and I got started on it but I had trouble abandoning the doomy feel. This game just plays differently in a weird way and I couldn't make myself get used to it long enough to design good maps for it. I didn't tell Revae that because I kept trying to believe in myself and make a decent map for it but I just never came around. Congrats Revae for really making it work and sorry i flaked!!

Definitely not my cup of tea, played up to Cuppy's map and that was enough for me. While it's a technical achievement to be sure and the map architecture is great with smooth layouts, it's sorely lacking in the gameplay department. No difficulty, no oomph to the weapons and the monsters are pretty meh. Sure is pretty though.

Yeah, I have similar thoughts. I bet if you make a simple corridor map with 50 pinkies and a SSG, it will be more satisfying than any fight in REKKR. And many of the cool things found in the maps make me go like "I wonder how this is made?" rather than "Wow, this is cool". Music seems disappointing too: there is some atmosphere but no memorable melodies or anything. So I also see this more like a technical accomplishment and I wonder what I'm missing when I read all these enthusiastic comments. I tried asking how people feel about the audio/visual feedback in combat on Doomworld, but did not receive any replies.

I agree also. While it is a real achievement to reach completion with a project like this and really impressive too, it's not for me. Unfortunately, I'd say. The graphics, while very well made, are in a style I don't care for. Maybe it's because I'm from the north myself, and 99.99% of all attempts which "draws inspiration from the vikings" are so far off the mark it's crazy. I don't know. Much better than the flat amateur graphics of "The Adventures of Square" though. The audio department was lacking too, for reasons already specified. If the author reads this, I must say that I'm sorry for my negative comments, but it is always better to be honest, I think.

Getting praise and such is good and such, but I'm significantly more interested in people's criticisms and figuring out how I can improve stuff.

Make the weapons more satisfying to use, that’s a huge part of it terminusest13 . Like I said above Rekkr is a superb technical achievement, but lacking in the combat satisfaction department. For mine one of the keys of Doom’s successful overall presentation is the combat, from the sound the weapons make to the way the enemies are when hurt and when they drop, it’s all tied together. It’s also why I’ve never been able to get into Heretic or Hexen despite it being the same engine and with fabulous map layouts and architecture. All of the sound effects in Doom combine to make a glorious soundtrack where the player can feel instant feedback and immerse them into the game, like what you’re doing in the map is creating your own personal demented rhythmical score, and that’s why I can play Doom without the background music most of the time. Doom IS the music.
