Finished it today. Halfway through the anime. Let's do this.
SUMMARY:
"My Neighbor Seki" or "Tonari no Seki-kun" is a manga about two high schoolers, a girl, and a boy. No, it isn't a romance manga or an erotic manga, no fap material here (unless you are creative enough to imagine stuff like that, heh). Basically, the focus is on the boy "Seki" (literally means "Seat"), who is a master at slacking and procrastinating during lessons that he often brings stuff to his desk and plays with them. Be it something simple like chess pieces, little robots, cards, or complicated like a miniature desk garden, a miniature subway station, or a miniature kitchen, the titular Seki-kun always knows how will he spend his day, by playing a "new game" on every single period! His "friend", the narrative protagonist Rumi Yokoi, is a girl who tries her darndest to pay attention during class, but her mind and eyes often wander towards the next game Seki-kun is playing at his dozen-times already modified school desk. Occasionally, she will participate along, but will mostly scold Seki for playing and would try to have the teacher catch him at play. It gets complicated, but still remains the same at the end.
PROS:
- Quite funny, or at least chuckle/nose-exhaling worthy.
- The art style is simple and absolutely adorable!
- Every new chapter has a new idea and a new twist!
- Both characters are very imaginative and they both turn something like an unusual chess fiddling session into a movie-like story!
- The anime itself is cool, even if a bit short, every episode is like 7:20 minutes long, OP is awesome, ED is awesome, everything is awesome!
CONS:
- A lot of Japanese cultural things serve as tools to tell the stories, if you cannot comprehend different cultures and learn from the sidenotes, reading this manga will be a nightmare.
- No seriously, shitton of the stuff is based on Japanese history and (pop) culture, manga tries to explain stuff like that, so that is cool.
- Although there is a character that kinda helps for that, the ship itself (between Seki and Yukoi) is either still sailing or has sunk a long ago. Dunno.
- 90% of the scenes are based on the last row of the classroom they are in. If you wish for constant setting changes or something, then this would probably disappoint you.
CONCLUSION:
If you want something simple, something cute (but not diabetes-causingly cute), and something funny, this manga is for you, especially if you don't mind the fact that it's another generic "high school anime" stuff. Sure, things get unrealistic here and there, but, its great enough to pass the time and learn how to from the great master Seki-kun :3 I am merely jesting. Since I like this kind of stuff I am giving it a high grade, but again, it isn't action stuff, it isn't deep, it doesn't touch much on the romantic frontier, it's kinda like Cromartie, but what if it was just 5 characters instead of 25?
8.9/10 It's adorable, funny, the fact that the ship didn't sail much is the only thing that bothers me, really. Otherwise, it's great!
