Controversial subject I know , but I like asking this kind of questions.
When I think that a wad is overrated , I don't necessarly consider it as bad. I rather don't understand why so many people are enthusiastic playing it whereas it didn't marked me enough to make me want to play a second time for instance. The reasons may be varied , maybe because of level structures , global theme , music , the gameplay...
- For my part , I'm not really attracted by some popular megawads made by famous mappers : BTSX , Ancient Aliens , Valiant come first in my mind. I found the aesthetics beautiful and the gameplay pretty well designed but I strangely didn't remember very memorable moments in those wads. First of all , I'm just not a fan of the mapping style , I can't really explain why but I sometimes find that the maps are too open and also the progression is too fluid. I admit that a very cramped map can be annoying but I like navigating in dark small corridors at times for instance. A lot of people also love the soundtracks of the wads I just mentionned. Esselfortium , Stuart Rynn and co made a great work but I always have the impression that the musics sound very similar so I easily forget them contrary to other wads where I instantly memorize the music (The legendary music of SF2012's map 29 for instance because it sounds weird lol or HR2 music). The things that I remember the most are the textures but the maps lack a bit of heterogeneity according to me , that's why I loved the lupinx-kassman's map in Ancient Aliens thanks to its unique theme in the mapset.
- Brutal Doom is a very overrated mod according to me and the dedicated megawad released was meh. I will not explain more , I don't have the doom feeling anymore while playing it.
- I found that some James Paddock's levels received more attention than they deserved. I enjoyed playing Jenesis and Jiffy Bag so I will not talking about those wads. I talk especially about pumpkin hell which was not bad but has nothing particular except its odd sky from Sonic games. I found the layout a bit jumbled and also the idea of a tech base out of place for a halloween map. The music was also too repetitive.
I will not judge the popularity of his wad "Project: Kate" because it was supposed to tribute a famous deceased doomer . It was a very heartwarming project but I don't like at all the purple used in his mapset and it's just two speedmaps.
- At last , I will mentionate The way id did series. Both wads are good mapset but I definitely didn't have the vibe of original doom maps but rather of modern mapping (especially on the second episode , the first one was ok). Other wads look more like to the iwads.
That's it, you can throw tomatoes to me now.

I’ll keep my tomatoes thank you very much as you raise excellent points that I find myself agreeing with. Like.

I think @phobus said it best when he stated that the community overrates wads in general. I'd take it a step further by stating that the community tends to overrate authors as well. You can easily tell just how much authors get treated by taking a well-respected member and a not-so-respected member and have them make the exact same map. Well-respected guy gets lots of praise for things, while not-so-respected guy gets barely any, but likely gets critiqued on the things that the other guy likely got praised for.

I love the music of BTSX and the soundtrack of AA was the only thing that I like about the wad but for some reason these songs feels less "catchy" compared to custom soundtracks like MM 1 & 2, Plutonia 2, HR2, Jenesis.

NuMetalManiak: I have to admit, I don't remember that statement, but it seems like I would have been talking about megaWADs... At least, going by my recent opinions. I would agree that we stick to preferred authors, though. I certainly do!

It was this thread. I remember the rest of it quite well, people being asses and hating on the IWADs for reasons I cannot comprehend.

I remember that thread too. Asses and hating seem at odds with what’s actually in that thread though, it actually appears downright civilised to me.

I don’t think many people would complain if you find Ribbiks’ shit overrated, but they would probably cunt you for trying that with a necrobump. That’s how those grumpy cunts roll, yo.

I know, necrobumping sucks, which is why I obviously won't do it (other than being an obvious troll), I was just hypothetically speaking. Anyway, they would, or at least his worshipers will anyway. Remember what happened to my Stardate 20x7 review? In less than two hours it got downvoted into oblivion. Either that or they'll totally ignore the post like it never happened.

Oh yes, the good old ignore-shit-we-don’t-like-until-it-goes-away-mommy-trick is its scientific name I believe.

"Necrobumping" has a real perverse ring to it.

For a socially progressive site, Doomworld is a perverse place. Maybe the two go hand in hand?
