Yesterday our French friends JCD, Oxyde, and Ch0wW released the third version of their hit ZDaemon mod, FCT Shop. It's a coop-oriented mod where you collect money that drops from the monsters you kill (or you snatch it from others), and after each level you're taken to the shop area. In the shop you can heal, buy and sell many different guns, stock up on various portable items, gift money to others, change the radio station, or even play the famous arcade game Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3. The mod highly encourages staying alive for multiple levels in a row in order to collect an impressive arsenal and is a fantastic way to breathe some new life in the familiar megawads. The new version features a totally revamped hub with tons of awesome details and Easter eggs, as well as a great deal of fresh weapons and items. One of the most exciting additions is the experimental laboratory that can be only accessed by paying a big sum. In it you will find truly wild weapons such as a ridiculously powerful chaingun which makes your controls barely responsive or a strange ground burner that's just as difficult to master as your beloved BFG9000. You can experience it right now by going to ZDaemon and looking for a French server with "FCT Shop" in the title. And now some screenshots!

It looks awesome, but I rarely make time to play Doom online. What do you think about this, memfis?

I think it definitely succeeds at bringing a "level up" system in the game. It's fun and motivating, you really want to get more money and buy more stuff. I guess the main problem is that a lot of new weapons and items are either not that useful or interchangeable. So unless you're a completionist who wants to collect everything available, you can build up a powerful arsenal relatively quickly and then money kinda isn't needed anymore. But apparently there are some variables that can adjust the prices, so if you spend some time tuning this to specific wads you should be able to come up with a fairly balanced system. And of course even when you're all powerful there is still a big risk of dying and losing all inventory and half of the money, so it's not like there is nothing to do after you buy everything you want. I'd say it's definitely worth a try.

So apparently the new version is already out and it indeed features a bank! You can now leave the server at any time and it will remember how much money you have. This is pretty much the best update they could have done and it's kinda surprising because I thought storing such information is not possible with ZDaemon's limited scripting system. Very nice!
