What do you guys think about Square's visual style? I can't help but feel like there is something very important missing. It's cartoony but not in a stylish way at all in my opinion. Especially the enemies look so primitive that I'm just not really motivated to fight them. They're just basic silly faces from a cereal box for five year olds or something. I know this game's graphics were intended to be simple, but it's almost like the authors intended them to be boring and soulless as well. I don't see anything cool in here.

I havent played the actual wad yet, but im interested to hear your definition of "soulful" cartoony style. From the screenshots i see nothing wrong aside from some unfamiliarity.

You can look at Tom & Jerry, or Nu Pogodi, or Crayon Shin-chan... The characters actually have personalities you can see just by observing their faces. They are interesting, they have distinct features in their design.
But in Square I can't find anything that would stand out. A face is just a face: it has two eyes, a mouth, sometimes also a nose, but that's all I can say about it. The enemies are totally nondescript, there is nothing unique about them.

I'm not sure I get exactly what you mean about not seeing the characters personalities. But I'm not sure I've ever connected to cartoon characters the same way you have. There is something to be said about the art style in the way they're supposed to look like MS Paint graphics, and the way the doom engine projects it creates some inconsistency with Anti-aliasing or the lack of resolution that makes them appear fine in some things and like pixelated junk in others. Take the screenshot below The Doom engine is able to project the wall textures and they adjust and skew losslessly to give the illusion of three dimensional space, but thing objects and hud weapon sprites that are flat, unskewed images are all jagged in places where you are supposed to be seeing bends and curves. This inconsistency is something that would drive me crazy if I was the creative director behind a project like this. If I couldn't have the capability to make it look right in the Doom engine, I would probably scrap the whole game! (or rather go with some totally different motif) I think it is possible to use high resolution images for sprites, and if I were on the team I'd make that a pretty urgent request. The pixels don't look very lovely to me compared to other pixel-friendly games like minecraft or realm of the mad god. It looks more like an accidental side-effect. Other than that I think the game looks really good.

I agree with memfis. I appreciate the effort but it's just smiley faces and flat colors...I mean, not everyone is an artist or has an artistic eye. Saying 'It's MS-Paint style!' is just translates to 'I don't know how to draw so here's some non-descript faces to shoot.'

Might just be that the enemies are just simple shapes though. I only have an issue with the flat and basic enemy graphics. That lamppost at least should have a more interesting design since it isn't supposed to be a living thing in the geometry-verse. Like some lighting and stuff like with what's on the guns.

I feel like some basic shading could do wonders to the characters.
