Why certain maps have certain names.
Why is MAP04 called "The Focus"? Why is MAP21 called "Nirvana"? Here we discuss why.
My theory is that MAP21's name was supposed to have a question mark at the end of it, but the question mark character wasn't implemented yet into the intermission screen text, so they just kept it without it, they perhaps thought it would be clever to put it only in the automap map name but in the end forgot about it.

MAP04's name might impy that it's a computer center or something. Where all the processing power is f o c u s e d or something.
In case of 21, I think they would've added a question mark if they wanted to. Perhaps it's named that way because it's the first level set on "the other side" or something.
A better question would be why is 20 named "gotcha"?

Map 20 is named Gotcha because it’s set in a small Hungarian provincial town.

One I dont get is Inmost Dens. Are they really dens? What constitutes a 'den' anyway? Are there outermost dens?
Other than this, 21 and 4 they all make sense to me though. I like Doom2's map names overall.

I think by 'baron' they meant the cyberdemon. But why didn't they name it Cyberdemon's Lair then?
I personally think that most maps in Doom II and Final Doom were given names that sounded cool, but had actually nothing to do with the maps themselves. How would one explain The Spirit World or The Living End?

It's the last normal map. Perhaps because this one is like a whole adventure that encompasses completely different places and stuff, hence the "World". And "Spirit" due to being, again, "on the other side", which is where spirits reside I guess. |

But there are at least some Barons in Baron's Den. Check the elevator and other areas past the red door with the mancubi.
Otherwise, I was also surprised I never noticed there are Barons missing in Baron's Lair.

Where's the hangar in E1M1? There aren't any big rooms where an aircraft can be stored or even be brought outside.
What's so military about E1M9? I don't see any armouries or anything military based.
What's so scientific about E1M5? I don't see any experiments or data being gathered.
If E1M3 is a toxin refinery, then what is E2M3 a refinery of? (E2M3 has the least creative title IMO)
How is E2M5 a command center if it only has one computer?
Why is E3M4 considered a house if it doesn't have any bathrooms, living rooms or even bedrooms?
E3M6 isn't even a mountain, more like a collection of islands.
Why is E4M9 called "Fear" if it isn't even trying to scare?
