I am now working on a new Heretic map titled " Templum Dormiens Dei", which translates to "Temple of the Sleeping God". This map requires ZDoom 2.8.1 or later in order to run, and features new monsters. Storywise, the map is a direct sequel to Dark Deity's Bastion. At this point the map is complete and ready for testing! Download link for Beta 3 is here. Credits: Apothem, Enjay, and Ozymandias81 for the Health Point Bar. All music by Kevin Schilder. Eriance, Ghastly_dragon, Blue Shadow, Captain Toenail, Hexx, Rolls, Gothic, and MagicWazard for the new DECORATE monsters.

Awesome work so far! The texture combinations combined with the layout (atleast what I can get off the shots so far), and architecture blend nicely to create a charming old schoolish Heretic atmosphere with a modern flare, looks like it's going to be a fun map to kill enemies in and explore.

Thanks buddy! My mapping progress is painfully slow these days, but probably sometime next year I'll finish this map up. Hopefully I can get you to playtest it for me when it's ready. EDIT: Here are some more pics

Hello again! The initial mapping for Templum Dormiens Dei is complete, and now the level is ready to be playtested. I would be grateful if any Heretic fans would take the time to play through this level and give their honest and unbiased feedback. Do not hold back your criticism Story: *This story picks up where Dark Deity's Bastion ended* Corvus barely survived the trap prepared for him by the Dark Deity. In the end, however, he triumphed over the magical D'Sparil clones and emerged with his life. But while he did battle in the evil god's bastion, Corvus learned the identity of the deity himself. The malevolent ancient power was none other than Scelus, the god of wickedness. In the following months Corvus sought the counsel of the elders, who had instructed him in the ways of magic and warfare. The wizened men of Parthoris knew of an eldritch temple which served as a shrine to Scelus, and it was thought that the dark god himself lay sleeping within its mighty walls. Corvus gathered his courage and prepared for his perilous journey, for a great burden now rested upon his shoulders - he was to make his way to the temple, braving the fearsome guardians, misshapen beasts, and deadly hazards along the way, and defeat the nefarious deity known as Scelus. This level requires ZDoom 2.8.1 or later in order to be played(and yes, there is a new boss for you to kill!). I have fully implemented difficulty settings. Enjoy!

Badass! From the screenshots I'm guessing no custom textures? It takes some skill to made variation with the tiny amount of textures in vanilla Heretic, the screens look great. I recently got back into the game after 10 years, I tried episode 4 which I had never played and got smoked quickly...my Heretic chops aren't that good after all.

And thanks for your kind words! You should try out the level and give me some feedback. I tried to balance difficulty settings as well as I could, so if it is too hard you can always drop down to easy until you build your skill back up.

Hello,
Templum Dormiens Dei has been updated to Beta 3. In addition to a great deal of fixes and balance tweaks, I added some new enemy types to the level in an attempt to add some diversity to the encounters. I also added in a few pop-up messages which occur when certain things happen, which I feel better explain some sequences of the map. Finally, by popular demand I restored the player's ability to jump to the morph ovum secret, which I had removed in Beta 2. Below are some screens of some of the new content.
I am curious to know if these new monsters are a good fit for the level, so feel free to have a go at the level and let me know your thoughts. The download link for Beta 3 is here. Thanks guys.

New screens remind me of 90's dungeon crawlers, in a good way Monsters seem to fit their environments from what I can see, but I'll see if I can take a look sometime in the next few days.

I'd definitely be interested to hear your thoughts, man! You are one of the few people I know who likes Heretic as much as I do.

What I played so far was pretty good, didn't get that far though since I got stuck behind a building.. I'll try again and give my opinion on the full level a bit later. : )

Where do you come up with the cool names for heretic wads? Do you google translate stuff to Latin?

I'll give a screenshot to show where, just gotta do some chores quick.

Ok, so I finished the level... and it's outstanding work, man! The sense of exploration, texturing, and the atmosphere were all impressive, the layout is cleverly interconnected and the outdoor areas are beautiful and fun to run around in, contrasted nicely by the tricky indoor areas! The crushers were genius, IMO! Some of the new monsters and the turrets were pretty cool as well and fit nicely aesthetically.. I don't care for the Medusa though, it had too much health, especially for it's model and for the combat role it played... maybe it'd be better suited as a glass cannon monster? As in, increase it's damage, and maybe make it shoot maybe 2 consecutive green balls that follow you or something.. but greatly reduce it's health? I went back to the same area I initially got stuck in, and apparently my brain doesn't function properly, because I found a way out this time. Stuff I noticed: An Iron Lich whirlwind shot me over this wall... was really hilarious, so I ran around back to the yellow key door... ... only to be greeted by this... I'm thinking some w1 line that lowers the pillars if you get thrown over the wall. Got stuck behind this stalagmite, it's in the cave immediately after the greendoor. This torch burns into the ceiling, maybe sink the sector of the torch specifically, so the torch can lower, and you don't have to restructure the room? This midtexture looks a little awkward IMO, maybe sink it into the ground a bit to make the top align with the wall to the right of it? Anyway, everything aside, it was a great map.. I love the way it unraveled, recommended to all fans of Heretic, and a great addition to idgames!

A Doomworld member by the name of Not Jabba has reviewed Templum Dormiens Dei, and he was quite kind! I'm linking it here because I was flattered by his review. www.doomworld.com/vb/doomworld-news/93248-the-newstuff-chronicles-530/Also, a gentleman by the name of Leonardo85 uploaded a playthrough video in which he successfully completes the level from start to finish. Warning: This video is long!

That's a great review, he hit the nail on the head with the exploratory nature of the map. That playthrough is decent as well... surprised he managed to beat it the first time actually.
It's a pity the wad doesn't have more votes on idgames, but I guess it fits in the "hidden gems" category that makes it more special to someone that'd stumble across it.
