I had an idea, I haven't tried it yet though. Just running this by to see if anyone has tried or has heard of someone trying this before.
In Doom, there are decorative light source objects, such as floor lamps, torches, candles, etc. When you look at these objects in Dehacked, these are flagged to be 'always bright,' which means no matter what the darkness level is in a sector, the entire object will be unaffected by the darkness in it and show in it's full color.
Unfortunately, this also includes parts of the object that should be effected by darkness. The stick that holds up the torch, or the metal parts of a lamp, or the barrel that contains the flame.
Is it possible to take a firestick, and create two seperate thing objects, the unlit torch, and then a seperate flame without the stick, and then stack the two thing objects on top of one another? Will that work?

There are mods which have demons' eyes glowing in dark under certain brightness levels. There are also textures that have a "illuminated wall" effect when under a level of brightness. I have seen and played mods which do all of these, so I don't see why it isn't possible in the first place. I reckon you need to make separate textures or something to create that effect for candlebras and lightning posts, but, to affirm your thoughts: Yup, its pretty much possible.

I've heard this idea in 2015: Not sure if it resulted in anything.

DN's example is on-point, but beyond dehacked and such ports like Doom Legacy only have the flame portion of the object translucent while the stick itself stays opaque. I believe this is done the same way a Doomguy's armor color is changed in multiplayer: A certain range of the palette is somehow set to be translucent but not the whole palette.
Obviously no help to someone just wanting to thinker around but still thought it was worthy of note. The best way to achieve it is to just use two separate sprites as the chaingun and a few other weapon sprites do.

Heretic uses 2 objects for the key statues, so in theory this could work.
