I was not offended by the death message, I do however consider the placement of the word rape in the death message is unwarranted and unwise in today's context, and could easily have been replaced by an equally shameful yet less loaded word, such as "Player was eviscerated by a lost soul". How exactly is the word "rape" a loaded word? What if the lost soul didn't remove the player's viscera, but instead penetrated them without their consent? The use of the word "rape" in that instance would be very appropriate, but by your logic the wad author shouldn't use this standard English term because it is "unwarranted and unwise"? I'm legitimately scratching my head here. So we have a wad author describing a demonic floating burning skull as "raping" the player character. The player character is the hero in a video game about a fictional futuristic world where demons invade Earth and kill billions of humans. The player character opposes and kills said demons, including the aforementioned lost soul. Where's the problem here again? I think snowflakes have reached a point where they seek to be in a constant state of victimhood because it not only gives them a protected status, but also allows them to offer up an excuse for why they never amounted to jackshit in their lives and are still baristas at age 47. This whole "offended by innocuous words" bullshit is just one facet of that. People are assuming that someone who wrote about a lost soul raping someone is themselves a pervert who has rape fetishes, and if left unchecked will go on to rape hundreds of innocents if he isn't discipled by furry trannies and Doomworld hentai bois. Or that young video gamers will see the hypnotic word "rape" in video game user-created content and be turned to the dark side, wearing khakis and polo shirts and slipping roofies into girls drinks at frat parties. Oh, the horror!

Thanks for being exactly the deadbeat doomer board member stereotype people are fighting against, bob. Could you be more clueless about what's going on here? How can I help you catch up?

40oz, No, I agree with him. If I was the author of his post, I would only drop the insult at Doomworld members, but nothing else (" if he isn't discipled by <... to the end of sentence>" is something I would avoid saying). My reasoning: - better make your point without insults - "rape" is indeed no more a loaded than "kill" - also note that in this game you are acting out "kills", and receiving "kills", but not acting out "rape", nor you are receiving actual "rape". Calling some action an unrelated word - that is, get it, what is called "rape" in this context is not in fact "rape" - is not really substitute for showing the implementation. If you want the example of the game which actually promotes rape, there is an example: RapeLay. It is in a whole different realm really from Ascension, Doom, etc. I hope that needs no explaination.

Probably by answering the simple questions I posed in my post Make a thread about it. That's not what we're talking about here.

Make a thread about it. That's not what we're talking about here. Actually it literally is. The thread is "Doom community happenings", and I'm questioning the merits of an argument made recently by the Doomworld community against a rather benign secret area of a pwad. The topic was brought up and people weighed in, including myself. It's germaine to the overall discussion. My sense is that you would respond differently if I had a different opinion on the matter.

I wouldn't say that the "rape" obituary is downplaying the word. It's anyway about a fantasy monster who presumably does it, then kills your character. I don't see how demonic monsters of hell would be beyond such acts. The word is used in an obituary, not randomly for lighthearted events. If anything, I would say that the use of this word makes actual rapists look more monstrous, by association. Also I guess it makes YOU, the player, hate this monster more, wanting to kill it asap so it doesn't kill you and show the rape obituary.

The monster attacks you in an attempt to possess your body, and if successful in repeated attacks to wreak mental and physical trauma it removes you and controls your body. A dead man walking who has had his spirit eroded throughout each evil act of merciless sodomy inflicted and left to toil in vapid hopelessness.

About the word "rape". Why are people so triggered with it nowadays? I get it that rape is horrible (anybody disagrees with that? Why do we even have to virtue signal about "BAD Things are BAD"?) but here is a thought: I remember the case of Sargon of Akkad making the crude joke "I wouldn't even rape you". Why did he chose "rape" to make edgy jokes? Well,. because that's one of the things in the present culture which is magnified into this big bogeyman by the media or feminists. Since Sargon wants to trigger these people, what is he gonna use. "Kill"? No, "rape" is more triggering. There are people who are exaggerating, saying rape is worse than death. And I get the emotional sentiment and the scars one can get from rape. But this is overblown and so are the counter reactions.
It's the same with stand up comedians. What's most controversial to talk about in current society? Previously it was religion. In the 90s there was satanic panic, so the edgy boys would draw pentagrams and devil hand gestures, 666 and all that stuff. And those elements even passed onto Doom because that was the 90s. Meanwhile the recent years bogeyman is rape, so it makes sense that edgy bois (and sometimes edgy anti-feminist girls) will do rape jokes.
You'd say, what's the reason though to trigger people when you already know these words are only controversial? I don't know if being edgy helps anyone, probably not, probably it's like pouring gasoline in the fire. But it's getting me pissed how big the rape bogeyman is today, the exaggerated 1 in 5 statistics, the pushed idea that there is rape culture everywhere and so on. Of course when you think of the word rape, the first think that comes in your mind is women as victims. But rape is not exclusively happening to women (however different statistics and agendas will make you believe eitherwise, but are we honest to look at all the data?). And what about the prison rape joke? What about the "don't drop the soap" joke? (that was actually an achievement award in Dusk on Steam). We always imagine a man being the victim in these cases and so we don't feel the same. I will be less shocked by that joke than one which involves a woman being the victim. And I don't say remove the "don't drop the soap" joke. I'd rather allow everything at this point. Because it's either we remove all offensive material (instead of selectively those we perceive as misogynistic) or we kinda live with it. I don't see any other way.

I think it was just Lynn who brought the example up to show something besides the Lara Croft easter egg that might look edgy in that mod. No one else from the Doomworld thread brought that up.

I suggest all parties temporary suspend their participation in this argument. You might be inclined to think that issue needs to be resolved, that you are capable of so resolving, but I am suggesting this resolution can and needs to be postponed, cause this seems to get personal or has the potential to become so in the near future.
First, realize that controversial subject does not concern any current or ongoing project that happens to be posted on doomer boards. Thus, the stance on it is of now irrelevant, and needs not be decided until that actually happens.
Second, if you think that this resolution is nonetheless important because it will influence what projects are accepted or rejected on some other doom forum, then you are using this forum as a political platform to pursue an agenda that can only be satisfied by forcing other forums to change their policies in accordance with your agenda. Not a good idea.
As for resolving issues surrounding the concept itself - unrelated to doom - as I said at the beginning it simply seems the storm is brewing and about to blow up all over here. Does not matter whose "guilt" is larger in this, it just needs to be stopped right now and delayed. Some time later, guys. Otherwise even people not participating in this may get affected.
p.s. also note my reaction to this. It is hard to tell with written words what one feels, but one of the plausible scenarios I can read right now is absolute disaster. Even if I am wrong, there is more than one person here, thus someone may actually see the things this way and bring it for real. The only way it can be avoided is if everyone voluntarily acts to prevent it, which is exactly what I can't rely upon right now.

BIG DICK NIGGA, a friendly advice would be to just ask yourself before posting how others might react if you did. You are taking risks for something that is not necessary. This is not a judgement, however, but the truce really depends on everyone applying this kind of advice to their own actions. Also of note how this does not require any party to surrender their opinion and change their views. Whatever views you hold are irrelevant, you may think you are right, and don't need even to change that outlook, but one should simply act according to what results may happen from their actions.

Yeah I'm a RAPIST R - epic A - gamer P - I - S - T - This is bothering me. I can't see the relationship between the letters and the words. Like a riddle that's gnawing at my intellect. It's like that old saying: 98℅ of people go mad when a phrase doesnt end the way they were sausage.

You know I wrote out this whole thing where I was going to explain stuff and you know make points and stuff but then it dawned on me,
I'm talking to a caricature, the caricature of the starwman Doomerboards gets labelled with.
If you ever told me I'd be explaining why rape, probably the most heinous thing a human can do, is a sore subject, I'd have slapped ya for being so stupid.
Now I'd slap ya for wasting my time.
I'm not even saying you can't even joke or whatever the fuck low effort garbo we are talking about, I'm genuinely baffled that you don't understand why people would be upset.
Except I'm not, actually, no I get why completely.

Rape is bad but it's indeed sorta weird how it seems to be perceived as something worse than killing. It's much easier to make a killer joke than a rapist joke, and rape scenes tend to get much more negative reactions than killing scenes. Is it fucked up that we see things like this?

Still no explanation, only condescension. How typical! The questions remain though. How is "rape" a loaded word? How is it "unwarranted and unwise" to use it in the manner used in the pwad? Maybe there is context that I'm not aware of. If so, please aware me! Is the modder a known rapist or pedophile? Is the Doom community a haven for rape victims? Perhaps his employer plays Doom? These facts would be relevant, and to be honest all I know of this wad author is what I've read over the past few days, which is heavily biased to say the least. There are plenty of films, books, music, and other art forms that deal with the act of rape in one way or another. I'm not sure that I see this as being any different. I don't see the death message as advocacy, promotion, or apology for rape, nor do I see intent to offend in the way that the death message was written. What I see is someone who is part of a protected class flexing their victimhood on someone else who likely has no malice whatsoever. Like I said before, it's fairly innocuous to anyone who isn't a snowflake begging to be offended by something. Since the big man went through the trouble of splitting this off into it's own thread, I'd like to get a explanation. I feel I'm owed one.
