You should interview Enjay.. it'd be lovely to hear things from the perspective of someone who works primarily with Zdoom and has been mapping for as long as he has.. he also seems like quite a down to earth kind of guy judging by his posting. Shit yeah enjay is a scholar and a gentleman, a teacher as well if memory serves me correctly. I’ve been playing his maps since 1995!

Good threads going on started by yours and my faves, our very own 40oz and memfis. The end of net neutrality
Seriously do you yanks just not give a shit about the world you live in anymore? Stand up fuck! Is Youtube warez?
On that very topic, I’ve always wondered how sprite recolours of id software I.P. were allowed into the archives, i.e BTSX, realm667 edits, etc...

On that very topic, I’ve always wondered how sprite recolours of id software I.P. were allowed into the archives, i.e BTSX, realm667 edits, etc... I think the argument is that because they were translated to work in a pallete that was built completely from scratch, to translate those sprites back to Doom's original pallete would give them a tutti-frutti* look, so even though they look the same, it takes a little extra work to get them back to Doom's original untampered form. So I think they fall under the same category of monster recolors like the Dark Imp or the Cacolantern.

What category is this? The “turn a blind eye one?” I’ve heard the argument before and it’s pretty weak. Don’t get me wrong, I love to see the new palettes and enemies, but I don’t see how palette translated sprites are any different than distributed id maps or music etc. Different standards for different authors I think.

I'm not sure, it could be some of that. I'm kind of split down the middle. For example, many of the new patches in Mutiny use original Doom IWAD textures as a base. Theoretically, you could reverse engineer some of them back into their original form, so I don't know for sure if I'd be crossing any lines with that.
So in a way I think its fair, but I personally wouldn't feel good about duplicating that much IWAD content in my own PWADs just for some extra dark pink and dark red to show up in my wads. It just doesn't seem right. But it's also my subjective opinion that I like the way reds and pinks fade to brown.

Are you trying to tell me Rush Limbaugh is a high standard of truth and accuracy? Read the friggin' article and then argue the merit of the points using reason and logic, not by the author who wrote it and your preconceived notions of him or his biases. If it's wrong that's fine, I am open to that, but do try to explain your position good sir.

My position is that there must be trust of information by way of credibility of author. In this case I don’t trust Rush to know which day of the week it is, therefore I don’t place credibility in a word he says. Understand grumpy? I did read the article btw.

This is exactly what we're aiming to retain, though. Making it legal for ISPs to block wide portions of the internet is going to kill this very spirit that he's praising. As it is now, your new site for your new small business, no matter how small, can show up on Google and other popular search engines with as much likelihood as any other site. What we currently have in place with Net Neutrality is exactly what has allowed for the internet to boom like it has in the last 30 years. his claims that the internet was "completely unregulated until now" are simply not accurate. Rolling back NN will kill this. Your access to small sites is not slowed down or sped up arbitrarily by ISPs, as that is currently illegal - You're simply given a download rate and speed depends solely on the location and power of the server (website) you're connecting to. With Net Neutrality rolled back, speeds to small sites will plummet on affordable plans that 90% of people use and will only be able to be accessed in their full-speed glory with unrealistically expensive internet plans.
Government regulations are the only reason we don't have child labor in this country. It's the only reason working conditions have to be safe by law. Without regulations, businesses are free to engage in whatever sick practices they please to give consumers cheap prices. As the average person only has a limited income, they will be forced to go with the cheap option, even if they disagree with the morality of the corporation providing the goods. Without government regulation, monopolies pop up and squash competition. No one can stop them from engaging in sick practices without government regulation. This entire argument for "true free market capitalism" is fundamentally flawed in that it seems like people read some Ayn Rand and took it for gospel. Sorry, but the corporations do not care about public wellbeing as long as profit margins. Conversely, successful governments have to to prevent full blown social upheaval and remain a powerful contender, globally speaking.
Sorry, but history disagrees. I point you toward per-regulation industrial America. Countless on-site deaths. Child labor. You name is, it will come back if we allow "true free market capitalism" without any regulations or rules.
Ok, so it's not a health thing. Why did you bring it up then? Where does the "bombardment" from these signals come into it if it's "not a health thing"? Weird side rant there Rush.
Sorry but no. We just want fair and equal access to all the content on the internet without the corporations deciding what sites are "best for us" via arbitrary throttling.
"If it looks like censorship and it smells like censorship, it is censorship."

Didn't it become uncovered that ID didn't care about re-use of Doom resources in Doom projects as long as there is some modification? Surely color swaps counts as "some modification"?

And absolutely nothing is out of bounds for shitting on, question everything and know where things stand for certain. Guessing is a fools game. Doomkid I remember something along those lines, although I recall Marty Stratton did not give an absolute blessing and just gave the usual read between the lines and don't go overboard kind of blessing. Maybe somebody qualified could find the post in question on dw.

Doomkid, now there’s a dude who’s opinion I can rely on to be fair, balanced, down to earth, and full of incredulity at clear stupidity. A credible source as it were. Good thing you have Doomkid to do the heavy lifting for you, huh bro? Net neutrality existed under Obama, but before that, there was none. Get it...there was NO NET NEUTRALITY LAW. It was the wild west. Do you recall not being able to get your point across back then? Do you recall being throttled and limited while some big corporation or entity was free to do whatever? Do you recall your ISP "blocking wide portions of the internet"? No, you don't, because it never happened. Why in the hell would an ISP want to limit their consumers' access? All that would do is create resentment and anger, and consumers would simply create and then utilize another source for internet access, putting the ISP out of business. This whole thing is a leftist scare tactic in the same vein as "Republicans want to throw granny off the cliff". It's about creating fear so that people will put more control in the hands of the government(i.e. Obamacare). This is akin to the Fairness Doctrine, only for the internet instead of talk radio. Because you know, we don't want people being exposed to too many conservative or right-leaning web pages - some of them may grow a brain and realize that they've been lied to all these years. It's the same directive the left always has - grow government and take away more freedom from people. Honestly I like you guys, I really do. But you need to wake up.

I think he makes some pretty good points, honestly.
Net neutrality was introduced out of necessity, though. It wasn't until 2014 that this particular beast emerged and the FCC proposed a rule allowing ISPs to offer certain websites/businesses a faster track to send content. Obama blocked that. We should all be thankful it was blocked the first time around. Really though, similar stuff has been tried before, always outrageous and always with shitty effects:
(In summary, in 2004-2006 several large providers came to a principled agreement to be 'net neutral' after a giant stink that caused many small providers/small businesses to tank, but in 2007 Comcast illegally inhibited it's users from accessing certain sites and using certain file sharing software. This decision essentially made it clear that legislation forcing net neutrality was necessary for a truly free internet.)
The government has been put in a position where it has to force ISPs to offer equal access to the internet and not give priority to business partners/etc etc. As it is now, conservative and right-wing webpages as well as hardcore left-leaning pages are all allowed to exist on the net. That very well may not be the case when ISPs are granted the power to throttle access to whatever chunks of the net they see fit.
I like the theory that if stuff like this happened, an alternative method would simply be invented and sold to compete but I don't have much faith that it would actually turn out this way. In many parts of the US, there is only 1 ISP option, so that blows the "go with the more competitive option" out of the water and god only knows how long it would take for a new infrastructure or other means of accessing the internet to be invented and then sold to compete with the current powerhouse ISPs. Maybe it would happen but it's still more likely to result in years of bullshit and throttled access to big chunks of the internet for the common consumer.
I like how the internet is right now and I don't what people deciding for me what I can and cannot use my bandwidth for. A repeal of NN will open that door.
EDIT: Man, this is making me so glad we have a Doom forum where we can debate lofty shit like this openly and freely, I really enjoy it when people are actually bringing solid counter-points and engaging in an actual debate rather than just either resorting to insults or locking the thread, it's honestly very enjoyable pitting ideas against eachother like this

Now that my pain medication has kicked in and my trapezius isn't killing me(as much), I can hopefully be a bit less caustic in my responses. Obviously we are all after the same end goal: An internet where everyone is free to do what they wish as long as it doesn't harm others, with no person, group of people, or entity given special privileges or special access. A place where everyone has equal ability to disseminate and retrieve information. And access that is reasonably priced, so people are not unfairly gouged by greedy ISPs. We all want that. I don't claim to have all the answers. I've certainly been wrong before, and if I turn out to be wrong this time, I'll be the first to admit it and fight alongside you guys to reverse what's been done. It's definitely not a simple, clear-cut issue. There are a lot of nuances that have to be taken into account. It is true that corporations care quite a bit about bottom lines and profits. No denying that. But going back to your point about government regulation stopping child labor, remember that it was the people rising up and demanding change that forced the politicians of the time to enact laws protecting children. The government didn't just benevolently swoop down like an angel and "do the right thing". They were just as nasty as the corporations, only the people had the power to force their hand. Net neutrality sounds good in theory. The way it has been presented to the American people, net neutrality seems like a solid win for average Americans. But I always fear what they don't tell you, what's hidden under pages and pages of legal jargon and bullshit. I fear the hidden agenda.

Given history, your fear is honestly totally justified! I too hope this agenda isn't a means to some "even worse than the alternative" end. It wouldn't be the first time a bait & switch has been pulled on the population..
