I miss GreyGhost too. Even when doomworld threads were getting crazy he always had a way of posting a cheeky silly response that was completely separated from any kind of emotional ground. He was the perfect forum member.

He was very helpful too. He did the tedious job of cleaning up my kuchitsu.wad. It had tons of unused textures and other junk, I was new and had no idea how to deal with that, and he just volunteered to do everything. He helped on other occasions too. I think he had very good understanding of various command-line tools.
I prefer to think that he's still alive but what you guys are saying might be closer to the truth.

Yeah, GG was the best. I liked reading some of his "Back in my day"-type posts, it's clear that that man came from a different era compared with the majority of DW. Like some Shaolin sensei guy, he would make anyone who stood near him, getting some of his wisdom, feel proud. I really wanna believe that he's alive.
I think we should start a real effort on finding him somehow. He must've left some info during all the 10K posts he had made on DW that would help us track him down.

As much as I'd like to make sure he's fine, I think tracking him down is a very bad/dangerous idea.

I am the danger blah blah etc...
The dude didn’t leave much to go by, just an age, rough location and knowledge of a previous heart attack. I used to communicate with him by email from time to time so I’ve sent him one now. Nothing has bounced back to me yet, but that doesn’t mean much as his mediafire account links are still functioning.

Every time I visit an old Doom thread and see a post by GreyGhost it makes me sad. The dude was more level-headed than about anyone else in the damn community. Always a pleasure to interact with.

Dragonfly does some pretty amazing stuff. He's advances so rapidly compared to most mappers. Almost every time i see him start on a new map he seems to double the expectations of his last project.

He is likely to be the "Mapper of the Year".

Aah, so that’s why mappers are generally grumpy and humourless salty fuckbags. Thanks for clearing that up!

It was a bit crude to be sure, and I don’t want to tar every mapper with the same brush, but some just take this shit too seriously in the anal and not necessarily productive way.

Haha, nah I wasn't being entirely serious in my "how can anyone compete with that" comment.. honestly, if you're mapping for anyone but yourself then you're wasting your time and at best you'd end up making soulless textbook jack of all trades "tasteful" maps that don't stand out and are ultimately forgettable. Rather go marry and have kids or something. haha.

That's easy to say, but some people have lower self-esteem than others and are somewhat dependent on the public's reactions. I can't impress anyone with a well told joke, I can't give a valuable life advice and get a heartfelt "thanks" in return, I can't perform a guitar solo and hear "dude, you're awesome!" from my friends (what friends?). But I can share the cool stuff I create on the internet, read about people's positive experiences with it, and feel a little bit better about myself. "I guess I'm not a total piece of useless crap if I made someone's day better". I need such thoughts once in a while, they give me life energy. But yeah, that can be harmful too, as an artist might become too dependent on encouraging comments, which will dictate certain choices and prevent him from growing as an artist. It is obviously much better to be an independent individual with high self-esteem, but, well, the road to that is long.

I try not to view it as competitive and I absolutely adore the screenshots that all the various mappers post, but I must admit sometimes I check out that thread and wonder why I even map at all any more. I've spent 16 years now doing it and yet I can't "compete" with people who have been mapping for like 2 years in some cases.
I then remind myself that it's absurd to stop doing something you enjoy just because you're not fantastic at it - if everyone did that, no one would have time to get great at anything - but the ratio of the sheer amount of time I've spent mapping compared to how good my maps actually are really does disappoint me sometimes. It's strange and kind of annoying to hear a review or playthrough or whatever of my maps mentioning that "Doomkid might be new to this" or other such comments. Everything I know how to do or am good at in the world of Doom modding is old hat. I don't want to just keep putting out episodes every few years that get progressively less and less downloads than my previous releases.
I will never 'give up' mapping and I don't want to give the wrong impression that I'm sitting here wringing my hands over this and stressing, it's just a culmination of minor observations really, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Doomed in Space will be my last big release. I'm seeing less and less of a point to actually work on anything beyond little bite-sized single map releases and even those will just be the result of those random mapping urges. A big cohesive episode or megawad though, it's like, what's the point when plenty of other people here are doing something I've been doing 2/3rds of my life but way better than me. With Doomed in Space I sorta feel like this little gap for a "high quality Star Wars-ish wad" will finally be properly filled, but that aside this is looking like the twilight years of my mapping career

Doomkid I remember seeing your UAC Rebellion trailer on youtube when I was in middle school and I wrote it down on a piece of paper and mentioned it to a friend on the bus and got called a huge dork for it lol. I'm not sure what to say about future projects that you might make but there are still impressions to be made I suppose. I don't know much about Doomed in Space since I haven't seen much of it but I do want to try it out upon release! You find making gameplay easier (I think so) and I tend to like obsessive detailing sometimes and get stuck on gameplay flow so maybe we could team up for a little thing Mini-rant about praise motivation that helped me finish an essay that's due today omg: I only have a set amount of doom projects in my head that if I ever make them all I will be done with mapping for good. I don't see it happening anytime soon but every one is made to fill a sort of gap/make what I want to see made for Doom to express myself. If just a few people praise me for my work then that's enough but I do hope to get lots more public reaction with whatever next release thing I do. I mostly map for myself to make those "dream WAD" daydreams come true but also with the expectation that people will think they're super duper awesome too. I do feel like I am a bit too attached to that possible feedback sometimes though. One of my doom projects was made specifically upon conception to be the best thing ever and win a DW Cacoward for recognition some 4 or 5 years ago. The beginnings are rough as I was still developing and learning mapping but I wouldn't change them as I couldn't see it being any other way. Winning one of those awards is also somewhat of an endgoal where if I won one I'd feel accomplished and feel like I'd never have to map again + that I wouldn't be able to top it. Only then I will feel like I've made my mark in the Doom community and have made something truly special for my favorite game. If that specific project doesn't win upon possible future release that I've poured so much time and thought into I'll be disappointed even if some other thing I make wins I'll be disappointed somewhat about that specific project not winning those points. @memfis I know you were disappointed when Kuchitsu won a Cacoward and I'd have likely felt the same way if that ticket was punched for something I didn't regard as high on a personal level. But yeah, once I'm finished with those I'm done for good having done every idea I ever really wanted to do. But if I still want to map there are always community projects to participate in I suppose (and make gimmick maps/ try other things I wanted to do but not enough to actually do it before). I want lots of praise but I need to remember to be grateful that some people even like my stuff at all. Attachment leads to suffering after all :/ So I guess I map mostly for only myself to express myself and receive the praise and recognition from others.

Kuchitsu is most definitely a cacoward worthy mapset, although I can understand why Memfis is not happy winning it with that particular wad. It’s like when singers or bands make a huge hit song, which is considered by themselves as a lesser work and now they have to play that stupid song for the rest of their lives. But if it makes the people happy, aren’t your goals met? Either way it’s good to keep the mindset to do better, to not accept what you’ve done and strive for more. But it’s also good to accept praise gracefully even when you don’t agree. Good discussion on this page gents.

One of Frank Zappa's biggest hits was "Valley Girl"! I think that's the Doom mapping equivalent of what happened with Memfis, lol. Still though, he's fantastic and in my opinion it's nice to see him receive recognition, even if not for the mapsets he considers his best work.
@supercupcake I think we could make something awesome in conjunction with one another. I plan on being done with Doomed in Space in under 2 months, I'd be keen to work on something. Hell, maybe we can get other doomer boards members interested as well and make a 5-10 map episode or something? I could dig that!
