in Feb 2018 I was in some educational camp. I used to go to robotics class and there I've downloaded from some anonymous file hosting and unzipped QZDoom with my fresh build of early Boggy Region on a laptop with Windows 8.1 (They could buy cheaper stationary PCs I think, cuz these laptops weren't going anywhere, but... alright. And I remember they had an odd amount of RAM like 3 or 6 gigs ddr3?). In the robotics class our goal was to create a car alarm, but we ended up with a box which sends messages to some phones (via WiFi?) and the real thing the box did was to measure weight via a piezo element (the only thing I remember I contributed was that I had come up with a simple division formulae). What was surreal to me in the beginning was that some that box couldn't compete with conventional alarm systems, so why should we bother? I didn't quite get it how that box had fitted under the seat in our mentor's car, but alright, it did something.

so, when either QZDoom crashed, or it was me not smoothly quitting the game, the mouse cursor on the first laptop disappeared. I tried to do some stuff that I saw my dad did when mouse disappears, but I got lost. I just moved on to another one. Cursor also disappeared there. The 3rd laptop survived this iirc

i now work in an office/warehouse for an online clothing retailer. I do customer service. Its a job that was previously done by two people, but i convinced the owner i could do the work of 2 people for 1.33x the salary.

we get a few hundred customer emails a day but in my first month i developed template responses for the common questions. Recently ive been automating a process of categorization which seeks out key words and phrases in the emails to sort the incoming email inbox by category, so i can just filter the messages and go through them one topic at a time and basically copy/paste the same template response for each.

Theres some fringe cases where customers spell words wrong or their emails are too wordy that they dont get sorted correctly, so it needs tweaks.

Im hoping by the end of the year ill have this categorization system so finely tuned that i can develop a script to respond to these emails automatically and spit out a short checklist of all the things i still need to do manually, like change shipping addresses, authorize refunds, change orders, change shipping carriers, etc. Then id be able to do 8 hours of work in about an hour and a half.

The job was chaos when i started but step by step im getting closer to automating it so i get more free time to do what i LIKE to do like playing doom while getting paid for it!

Fortunately this company isnt the type of company to be like "if you got time to lean, you got time to clean" that insist you need to keep busy even on stuff thats pointless so as long as i get the work done and my processes are efficient then we're all good.

No, i don't get away with it, because i don't play games when "i'm not supposed to", even though i get some off-time at work and i can certainly play Doom or other games. I just don't do it. I'm not crazy obsessed with the game to not only play it in my free time at home, but also feel the need to play it at my job, where i can just socialize with my coworkers when there's nothing else to do. Now that i'm thinking about it, i don't even play or map all that much at home either, and in the alst 2 months, not at all. That's why anything i plan always takes ages, even if my initial ambition is to make it fast. There's just too many other things to do, i can't devote all my time to Doom, even if i want to (which i don't).

Tangra, look mate, I haven't played Doom in a long while either. Doesn't mean I'll talk about it in a thread asking me to talk about playing the game. What kinda BS is that?

On-topic: Haven't played at work, but I played Doom a few times during online classes during the pandemic, maps that I already played in the past. I switched to games with less depth cause I almost got caught not answering questions twice when I was specifically asked. God bless the less-than-a-handful of students who fed the teachers answers all the time.
