Whisky: Tamdhu Batch Strength 006
Very strong whisky, just over 58%, but still surprisingly smooth neat. Prefer a bit of water in this one but not too much since it is already smooth given the abv. Tamdhu in general is highly recommended - the 12 year old is one of my favorites. Just wish the bottle didn't look like it does.. I guess I prefer a less flashy looking bottle.

What is the Port Charlotte review?

Hahaha. Actually Port Charlotte ended up being my favorite out of the younger smoky whiskies that everyone recommends (Laphroaig, Talisker, Ardbeg). Laphroaig 10 I still drink too mainly because it is much cheaper at around the mid $40s and I get 99% of the enjoyment out of it compared to Port Charlotte 10. My personal preference is Port Charlotte/Laphroaig, then Talisker, then Ardbeg.
Port Charlotte 10 is also bottled at 50% which I appreciate greatly and isn't a whisky that I need to add any water to in order to get maximum enjoyment. My main reason for enjoying it so much however is that it reminds me of vacationing in Port Aransas each summer as a kid. The flavor and smell reminds me of being back in the gulf (so take from that what you will), but I love the stuff. For this reason it will always be one of my favorites.
Tbh I highly recommend any of the peated scotch whiskies. IMO the best ones are the younger ones, especially Port Charlotte and Laphroaig for my tastes, because of the price. It isn't something I am dropping $100 at the store for when I need a refill so I can drink it whenever. I think Talisker 18 or Lagavulin 16 are still better tasting still, but they are obviously in different price points.
As an aside it is funny how older whiskies are just so different in comparison to the younger stuff. Redbreast 27 is the one that comes to mind the most (I had batch 3). It was like drinking peaches/nectarines and was so easy to drink even at 53%. So hard to compare stuff. Fascinates me how leaving something in wooden casks changes the flavor so much.
Happy drinking.

Whisky: Lagavulin 16
Not much to say about this one. Should be a staple of anyone's liquor cabinet if he/she is into scotch whisky. Easily a candidate for my desert island whisky.

Whisky: Knockdhu 2008 13 year old sherry cask finish 57.2% abv A very solid whisky which was released for Specs Texas. Requires a bit of water because it isn't as smooth as higher abv whiskies in my collection. Still fun to pull out every once in a while. It has a very unique flavor unlike other whiskies I have had. It has kind of a sweet soapy/lemon/tangy flavor. An acquired taste for sure.

Whiskey: Redbreast 12
Incredible whiskey. Probably the one I would always recommend to anyone wanting a whiskey to get their feet wet. Unfortunately it ruins some people because they never want to drink anything else. Can't recommend it enough and if you find it for $60 or less it should be an instant buy.

Can't say I'm a whisky aficionado (all I drink is a beer a month and very rarely absynthe) but I occasionally work the liquor aisle at my wholesale and do recognize most of the names. Nice broad selection you got going. A lot of customers here go for japanese whisky, not sure if they're being conned or not.

Hibiki Harmony. It is ~$100, and a blend, but it is very good. Highly recommended.

Whisky: Balvenie 12 Single Barrel
Was between this and the 12 double wood. Balvenie has always been a staple on my cask, especially the double wood, it is such a classic scotch. However for me the younger Balvenies are the ones I gravitate to more than the older ones (although the 16 y/o french cask is amazing). The 12 single cask comes in at a higher abv (~46%) which allows you to play with it a bit by adding some water without having a completely watered down experience. I prefer it neat personally.
Because it has no sherry influence, like the double wood, it is much more lemon-y immediately. I don't get too much of the sweeter notes that Balvenies are generally known for. It is also worth noting that each barrel is a little bit different so your mileage may vary for the single barrel Balvenies. I have read that some people have had horrible bottles of the 15 single barrel.
As an aside the 15 single barrel is apparently mostly second fill sherry casks. There are some which are supposedly first fill casks which are much darker in color. If you are ever curious about the 15 single cask and your store has multiple bottles ask them to open all of the tubes for you and compare the darkness of the whiskies. The first fill ones are much darker. Would be fun to get one of those first fill cask bottles.

Super jealous if you saw them when Portnoy was still on drums. I saw them a few times when they were playing Scenes From a Memory in its entirety as their encore a few years ago. Amazing show.
Yeah Awake is such an amazing record. Definitely in my top 3 DT albums.

Yeah Awake is such an amazing record. Definitely in my top 3 DT albums. Yeah last time I saw them they still had Portnoy on board. It was actually an ok concert, not their best I ever saw, both because halfway through Stream of Consciousness Rudess' rig imploded and they had to play the following songs or two as a power trio; and they played In the Name of God as an encore, while every other italian concert from the tour got A Change of Seasons in their entirety. I get it Bologna is not a main stop and you got a new album to shill, but I'm still seething. I actually only saw them twice before that, once it was a metal festival so they played a one hour hamstrung set or so; befor that it was Buffalo, and now that was a fucking concert. I'm huge on progressive rock / metal but not a big fan of live music tbh.

Whisky: Balvenie 12 Double Wood
In short this is one of my favorite scotches. I get such a heavy orange note from this whisky that I can't help but love it to death (oranges are one of my favorite foods). It is so easy to drink too at 43% and doesn't require any water. This scotch is in the kill-myself range of whiskies - I have to execute a very high level of restraint to make sure I stick to my couple oz limit otherwise it is easy for me to forget that I am drinking an alcoholic beverage and go way overboard. Fits my tastes to a T. Such an easy recommendation from me (and it is the cheapest Balvenie which is even better). Will always have a bottle of this on my cask.
Apparently some of the whisky snobs on youtube bash this whisky for being chill-filtered, not having natural color, and being below a certain abv. Tbh this whisky makes me just want to ignore all of these comments and avoid those videos completely.

Whiskey: Smoke Wagon Straight Bourbon Whiskey 58.2% abv
A cousin of mine is a huge bourbon fan and got me this bottle a couple months ago. Decided to give it a whirl. There is no age statement on the bottle but I would assume it is a bit younger than the scotches I normally drink because of the usual age of bourbons around this price. Still it is quite good tbh. I get the usual bourbon characteristics: cinnamon, sweeter floral notes (but not too sweet as I can't stand the sweeter bourbons), and a bit after you swallow you have a pretty prevalent mango note on your breath. Very big flavors all around, long finish. Easy recommendation.. just don't forget how much alcohol is actually in this thing.. good lord.
On a side note my manager turned me on to Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon which is like 70% abv this year.. might be crazy enough to try it out (especially because I live very close to the distillery so it would be fun to go for a visit). If it is as easy to drink as this Smoke Wagon whiskey then I would be blown away. Kind of nuts compared to some of the higher abv scotches I have had from reputable distilleries which turn my insides into mush because of the heat.

Good music selection, Haken is a bit too heavy for my taste but Scale the Summit is top tier, I really enjoy instrumental progressive as it ties nicely into jazz fusion, which I also enjoy a lot.

Chris and Travis are two of the primary reasons I got into guitar. I actually have Chris' Sherman 8-string he used to record Carving Desert Canyons.

Whiskey: Blanton's 46.5 abv
I have only heard about this bottle and have never really gone out of my way to try it. As luck would have it I found it randomly sitting in one of the smaller stores I frequent so I grabbed it.
It is a very easy bourbon to drink and very well put together - IMO if you aren't really into bourbon and want to try something I would say get this if you can find it for a fair price (sticker is ~$60 or something). If you are already into bourbon, scotch, etc I would say don't go out of your way to find this or pay a lot of money for a bottle because it really is just a good example of a good but safe bourbon. I would be able to recommend this more I think if it was a higher proof (there is a 'gold' version and also a cask strength version which is probably amazing but not spending the amount of money required for a bottle after the 46.5% version being just 'ok' in my books).
Anyways it was fun finding a bottle of Blanton's because of how hyped up it is but it is *definitely* over hyped IMO.

Good music choice as always, personally I think ELP peaked with their first self titled (their renditions of classical pieces go pretty hard), but Trilogy is still an excellent choice.

Whiskey: Garrison Brothers Single Barrel 47% abv
In short this is one of my new favorites. The flavors in this whiskey are so strong that I can't help but love it. It is like I am drinking the wood from the cask. Highly recommended. Not much more to say.

How long do you find your open whiskys retain their flavor? You seem to have an extensive collection with a great variety. I wonder if it is possible to drain those fast enough or you end up with a few stragglers.

As an example my RedBreast 27 I polished off earlier this year was 6 months old. Still tasted great.
You have to start worrying about having too much air in the bottle. Some people talk about re-bottling their whiskies to preserve them for even longer. But tbh I share mine so much with friends and family that they don't ever last too long.

Nice thread, will have to remember to check back for the whisky reviews. Good call on the PC10, it always has a spot in my cabinet. That finish goes on for daaaaays. My main reason for enjoying it so much however is that it reminds me of vacationing in Port Aransas each summer as a kid. The flavor and smell reminds me of being back in the gulf (so take from that what you will), but I love the stuff. For this reason it will always be one of my favorites. I feel this so much. Between alcohol and cigars (my two vices), I can count on one hand the number of bottles and smokes that can evoke a memory like that. Its so damn rare. I have a bottle of Sam Houston 15 that takes me back to a specific room in a house from my childhood, and the connection is so strong that just thinking about that house now I can actually taste the whiskey in my mind. I'm sure most people would find that very strange, but its an amazing experience that I would (almost) always trade my money for...and tbh, I'm a bit envious that you found that with something that is pretty reasonably priced and not discontinued or impossible to find. lucky bastard :]
