OK, I'll play too. You say you don't know much about the horror series... but I do. Let's start with...
Friday the 13th
It's high points aren't as great as some of the other series but it's lows aren't as low either. It's one of the most consistent horror series - if you like one of these you'll probably be able to find some enjoyment in the rest of them, even if some are better than others. Twelve movies in total. Unfortunately, the number 13 is unlucky for Jason as the series is currently stuck in legal hell due to rights issues.
Friday the 13th (1980) - The first one. Some say it's the best but I've always found it a tad overrated. Don't want to spoil it but I like to see more of Jason in these and that didn't start happening until the sequels. Pretty tame by modern standards in terms of gore/nudity but caused quite an outrage in its day. Can't remember if it was Ebert or Roeper but they encouraged people to send hate mail to Betsy Palmer for daring to act in this one (she plays Jason's mom). Has Kevin Bacon in it.
Part II - One of the more popular sequels and better than the first. More gore, better kills, more nudity, more Jason. He doesn't have his iconic hockey mask yet but has a cool burlap sack he wears over his head. Contradicts the lore of the first movie but nobody cares because Jason is cool. Has one of the more resourceful final girls in these movies.
Part III - Shot in 3D, so expect lots of stuff flying at the screen. More of the same but it's notable for giving Jason his iconic hockey mask. It has one of the more memorable nerd characters in Shelly and I enjoy his antics getting in trouble with a biker gang (!?). First one I watched so I have a soft spot for it but weaker than the ones before and after it.
The Final Chapter - Probably the most popular sequel and the one to watch if you want to get a feel for what these movies are about. Good gore/nudity/kills. Has the best nerd character in the series, played by Crispin Glover, who does this bizarre dance that's worth the price of admission alone. Introduces Corey Feldman as Tommy Jarvis, Jason's most recurring foe. Obviously not the final chapter.
A New Beginning - Follows the story of Tommy Jarvis after the previous movie. Not a popular sequel because of its treatment of Jason but it's still fun, if not one of my favorites. Directed by a former porn director and it kind of shows. A bit sleazier than normal, with a lot more gore and nudity and populated with some really bizarre characters. There's a fat kid who gets murdered for annoying this guy (not Jason) that kicks off the movie and is one of the funniest movie scenes I've ever seen.
Jason Lives - Third movie in the "Tommy Jarvis" sub-trilogy and my favorite Friday the 13th flick. Has a winking and knowing sense of humor running throughout the movie. Pretty good cast too - I think this is the best portrayal of Tommy Jarvis, the final girl is resourceful and memorable and the sheriff and his deputy make good secondary antagonists in this. It's pretty light on gore/nudity, the MPAA really went to town on this one, which is a bit of a drawback but I think it kind of works with the movie's lighter tone.
The New Blood - Pretty standard Friday the 13th movie, the only real notable thing about it is that the final girl Jason fights has telekinetic powers. It was directed by a special FX guy so Jason looks really good here but the MPAA really neutered the kill scenes and that hurts this one overall. Watchable, but not a favorite. First movie of four to star iconic Jason actor Kane Hodder.
Jason Takes Manhattan - Last of the Paramount produced movies and the last to have that classic 80's Friday the 13th feel. Sometimes mockingly called "Jason Takes A Boat" because at least half of the movie is set on the boat to New York rather than in the city proper due to budget constraints, which sucks. It really picks up once they get to the city though and has some memorable kills - particularly one where Jason goes up against a boxer. Probably one of the weaker movies but I have a soft spot for it.
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday - Weird movie that goes a bit too far left field of what the series is about. Spectacular opening that kills Jason but it's later revealed that he's a worm creature that can possess people. Not a whole lot of Jason in this movie as most of the kills are done by the possessed people, which is a real shame. It has a cool Jason-hunting bounty hunter in it. Probably my least favorite in the series but I get some enjoyment out of it. The director gives the hot FBI agent his surname, which I always found funny.
Jason X - Jason goes to space. Makes the most of the setting with some nice gags about vr, nanomachines, cryogenics, androids and so forth. Features my favorite Jason kill. Has kind of a cheap look about it, like it's some sort of low-budget Canadian TV series or something. Extremely dumb and cheesy but fun, albeit a bit of an acquired taste. Honestly, one of my favorites, though some people really hate this one.
Freddy vs. Jason - The big showdown! I think it does a good job of mixing both franchises, it's not an all-time masterpiece but it's fun and gets enough right for me to have a good time with it. It's also a great time capsule movie to life in the year 2003 which I always liked as that's the era closest to my own teen years and it feels authentic to me.
Friday the 13th (2009) - This is my favorite of the Platinum Dunes remakes of classic slasher flicks that came out in the 2000s, it gets the sex, drugs and rock & roll vibe of the series. There's some controversial changes to Jason - he runs, kidnaps people and sets traps - but they aren't enough to upset my sensibilities. Takes on a much more serious tone than most of the sequels. It's not a favorite but I think it's OK.
