lunchlunch So I was using a cheese, after all. Alternating between the two arch-viles' line of sight while tanking some fireballs from behind turned out to be pretty fun actually. This might have led me into believing that it was the solution. This method can be executed way more efficiently while losing minimal health so a nerf is reasonable. Well if you are interested I still have my demo of the secret map. I managed to deal with the two Cyberdemons near the start and explored a bit, but couldn't find any of the keys nor could I find out what are those evil eye switches good for. Near the end of the demo, I found another "real eye" switch across the ravine, which I could not access or shoot. That's when I gave up. MAP31 DemoOne more thing, perhabs it's not the best place to ask it, but would you mind if I added a secret reference to 10x10 into Hypothermia with the next update?

Congratulations! I'll need to pick this one up again where I left off. It's really tough and in a good way.

It's been a while, but I managed to finish the set finally. I don't often try out new wads as I'm more into mapping than actually playing the game, but this is some fantastic stuff, I haven't had this much fun with a wad in ages. Later maps reminded me a lot to og sunder just as it reminded others as well, and this made me relive some nostalgia as that was the first wad I ever played. Only recorded demos for map06-08 as 09,10 proved to be harder and couldn't beat them saveless casually. DemosMAP06: Was not a huge fan of this map for a simple reason, I'm terrible at dealing with cyber demons and the level closed me in with them quite frequently. I should really learn how to two-shot them at this point. Had no issues other than that. You worked with some rarely used textures and that really made the visuals stand out, and I managed to learn a couple of new stuff design-wise as well such as the transparent mid textures and closets with invisible walls. Got two of the secrets and the megasphere pretty much saved me in the demo. Somehow I missed the rocket launcher on my first run. MAP07: I found this one quite calm and somewhat of a breather map, although I know I would have a completely different opinion if I could find all the additional secret fights. Spent a bunch of time looking for secrets and I think I did well in that regard. But I just couldn't figure out how to find the extra stuff, might try it again with the hints you gave at dw. MAP08: This level is one of my favorites due to its climactic finale. That fight might be the one I enjoyed the most during my whole playthrough. Despite the size of it, still remains easy and bfg spamming a full army is just as fun as ever. Only died once there thanks to the arch-viles, but during my second try, I expected them and know where to hide from their sight. The other stand-out encounter for me was the semi-circle fight with the hell knights, I just love how dangerous using the rocket launcher is there. Found both secrets as well. MAP09: The other favorite, my one gripe here is the platforming. As much as I like it on maps like Precarious, balancing on narrow columns is just not for me. Other than that this is where nostalgia really struck me. The level has really strong Pale Monument vibes and all the flashing lights you used here made it even more gorgeous. Fights are great, especially the one with all the revenant snipers on stairs and I can really see what you meant by asymmetric arenas here. MAP10: I found the last map a bit too experimental for my taste and it felt a bit similar to the secret level in that sense. I don't have too much to say here other than how well-done the all out arch-vile encounter was. Beating it felt great and I wonder why they are so underused without other demons in general.

Played the first three maps, just to have a little taste, and damn lunchboyo.. you surely know how to please my needs. No complaints to file so far - the maps looks rad as fuck and the gameplay is my bread and butter. I have other mapsets to finish but this one is definitely going to be my top priority this month. Expect useless UV100S demos to pop here - as a small token of appreciation for the effort you've put into this (and for the hours of entertainment you've provided me by failing miserably on streams). I've recorded map01 earlier today and it turned out decent enough, so here: Attachment DeletedHave something to watch when you're feeling bored. The rest of the batch will be delivered at a later date. Minor nitpick from this soybaby; i find map01's midi choice to be rather questionable. The tune is kinda annoyingly repetitive but would be an okayish pick if the map was a cavern-themed one or something - but that hippie drum circle piece does not fit very well for a techbase map. Just my two cents. Also, you're forgiven. The Northman SUCKS BALLS, man. Too little family strokes, too much homoerotic screaming. And don't get me wrong here, i'm more than acquainted with the norse screamo scene -i love black metal- but those dudes' "growls" are only passable for a F-tier Amon Amarth cover band at best. and Amon Amarth is not even goodPlus is not even historically accurate. Years of listening to Bathory taught me that tr00 nord men -and wahmen- actually looked as glamorous as this, back then: faithful depiction of ol' scandinavian folk (according to the sagas, colorized)Now, if you're wondering: who's the man and who's the woman? - my answer is: does it matter? If they gonna use digital necromancy to raise the dead then Quorthon has a much better sex appeal for a milf than Nicole's. That's for sure.

@noteggboy I'm glad you're digging it so far! I'll take any demos I can get, I'll keep watching em if you keep recording em, but the later maps are pretty grindy to beat saveless just FYI. MAP01's MIDI is totally incongruous with the techbase aesthetic, others have complained about it too. For me, it sounds like music that probably would be best suited in a crystal-cave sort of level, but I liked the off-putting effect it gave, I wanted to lean into the surreal atmosphere, and the repetitive quick-tempo drumbeat adds a sense of anxiety to what would otherwise be a breezy laid-back experience. I won't argue with anyone that says it's the wrong MIDI for the map, but it was the sort of artistic flourish that feels right with me. Though unfortunately it does sound worse in some soundfonts than others. The Northman was okay, it's just deeply uneven and a little tryhard like all of Eggers' movies. I like The Vvitch a lot, but still, everytime I watch it, I feel like something's missing, it's not quite whole. I much prefer Antichrist as far as arthouse cabin-in-the-woods movies go.

Seeing this thread bumped again reminds me I still need to finish my playthrough of this wad. I stopped at map 7 at the secret (red skull key?) fight. I was just being a scared little bitch about it. I wanted to play something easy to make me feel good at doom again before returning to that fight and then completely forgot about.
As you can see I have the short-term memory of a goldfish whose favorite past time is bashing his skull at the side of the fishbowl, so I'd need to revisit the earlier maps to give my opinion on each individual map. But I still remember playing through the maps I played, and knowing about all the deserved praise this wad is getting, and still thinking to myself that this is an underrated wad. Just truly incredible.
The difficulty is higher than the wads I usually play, but that's also why I wanted to play this, I wanted to challenge myself and raise my skills. Especially the secret fight in map 7 seems like a "oh fuck me" type of fight, but hey, I need these type of fights if I want to get better. But so far nothing seemed unfair or unpleasant. Every encounter is presented in such a way that you know from the beginning that there is a solution to this, even if this solution isnt always that easy to find. And finding the strategy has always been fun and rewarding (even though with a few encounters it felt more like I got lucky than finding the consistent strategy, but thats lack of skill more than anything). And neither the fights or the maps feel too extreme or too big to tackle. I think this is a great wad for people wanting to get better at doom, because of how the encounters (and its size) are designed.
And the visuals! Every time I entered a new map I came in my pants. You make such good use of the stock textures and detailing that I forget I am looking at stock textures. Just gorgeous. If I ever go into mapping this is a wad I'd study. For both it's visual design and combat design. I cant wait for the sequel, 1x1, would love to see how you'd tackle that.
If I have time (and don't forget about it) I will finish this wad this week, I'd be doing myself disservice not to, this wad is just too good.

skyrHey thanks for all the kind words, I'm glad you've enjoyed it so far. I try not to bump my own thread all the time but I also don't want to ignore anybody that comments so I just wanna say I appreciate the writeup. As far as the difficulty goes, I wanted to challenge myself but also I was consciously trying to make something that's a sort of stepping-stone between, let's say, Plutonia and Sunder. The Slaughter-lite genre was popularized last year by MSCP and Haste and I think it's a niche that fits my sensibilities and can introduce more players to slaughter that maybe otherwise would avoid it. The last few maps are pretty tough but you should be ready for them if you've made it this far. I've actually toyed with the idea of doing a 10x10 sequel but each map would be done with a popular texture pack. So one map would be Gothictx, another would be OTEX, and so on. Dunno if I'll actually follow through on this or if I'll move onto new ideas.

Two more episodes and a slightly better rerun of the premiere: Attachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAttachment DeletedAlthough, i plan to deliver the full season next time. Do you feel spoiled by today's streaming services? Handing out completeness that challenges intentions of yore? I surely don't - was never fond of waiting next week's conclusion to any callous cliffhanger. The Buu saga in it's entirety sufficed to make my pre-teen afternoons painful to endure. Too anxious to wait, too dumb to prevent over encumbering thoughts becoming bereavement. Still, i must admit that for all the pacing issues that saga has, Vegeta's arc was astutely gratifying - seeing that old likeable villain redeem thy past and present crimes in such masterfully tear-jerking manner wouldn't be possible if the episodes were hastily given to me instead of slowly "earning" them so impatiently. Albeit, DBZ's logic ruins self-sacrifices a little bit too much.. as any loss can be easily reclaimed by finding (and caressing) the seven balls of an ancient phallic-like dragon. Tangents... where all uninteresting words goes to die. Where was i? Oh, right spoiled goods and now.. Betrayed desires; "sense of anxiety" you say? You dare to scheme and incite the anxiety levels -that already plagues the heart of this demon- musically? Pitiful. But that's a slant i can respect. Sticking to your own subversive intents and not the masses'; that tells me you are taking good care of your huevos, compadre, so keep it up. Did your surrealistic pillow worked on me, tho? Nope. That tune hasn't made me anxious, instead, it made me slide the volume bar all the way down to the left and subvert your malignancy with frenzy rites - chanté en français- namely, this. Then, when the call for violence seetled down: this to evoke an eventide's stratum of uneven calmness. No more words... ...but a few. I ain't fearful of no grind, crunchcrunch, as i don't play games that much - rarely 60 mins a day. Consecutive 2-3 hour sesions/streams? That's alien to me. Though i don't envy lacking endurance for such. If "gaming" could be described as a thespian way of wasting one's time - grinding would be wasting gaming time in order to extend the said time, correct? Sounds like a new entry on insanity's definition to me, but what do i know? My mother birthed a troubadour not a doc. Don't trust my prognosis. To finally end this flimsy compendium of nonsense; i lay at your feet yet another golden coin of thankfulness, for these three maps alone have enough neat ideas i can steal, borrow and corrupt - for my own leasure.

@noteggboy Thanks a bunch, these were very nice, UV-Speed with 100% Secrets- I've never seen the likes of that before, it's refreshing to see the maps in a new light. I prefer binge-watching. Thanks for supporting my rejection of mass approval.

There are issues with Coop mode. Especially with one way lines, you can lock yourself or you'r friends in some sections of the maps. I would suggest adding a way out or a switch that opens one way doors for Coop. I guess some maps weren't calibrated for more than one player.

@shibainumaster Co-op was not tested nor intended. Originally I was going to compromise by creating a version of the wad that erased all instances of linedefs that close doors but I got lazy. Maybe I'll get around to that in the future. Sorry, guy.

So I was going to finish this wad on stream but my internet died. So here are some blind demos of the remaining maps I haven't played: www.dropbox.com/s/taublohn3ojy0zi/10x10_demos_idgames.zip?dl=0Map04: I finally got back to finishing this map after taking a break from this wad. I think this map is fun until the end. I knew exactly what was coming after I saw those cells in front of the exit door. This trope is so tired for me now that it left a bad taste in my mouth. I am glad I persisted though because the remaining maps were all fun. All of the fights are quite fun. All in the same vein of gameplay but I never really sat in one spot the entire time so they are good. Map08: The ending of this map is a lot of fun. Very hectic at the start but the slaughter trope of killing the imps to make space really went far for me here. The rest of the fights were fine. Some gave me Sunder map07 vibes (the fight where you get ssg and then the area opens up to reveal the cyb for whatever reason made me think of Sunder map07). This isn't a bad thing because Sunder map07 is one of the best maps in the wad. The bit where you just get a bsk and then the door where you use bsk is right next to it was kind of meh but it makes sense in the overall scheme of things after map07. Map09: This map reminded me of Sunder map10. None of the fights are that hard but still fun to play through. I liked the opportunities to be very aggressive with bfg here to kill monsters in closets (the fight with the cyb on the center platform when you get bfg comes to mind. This map is also an example of why some fights should probably harshly punish the player if they fall. I didn't really participate much in the final fight because I happened to fall into the lava. Just shot everything from the pain sector. Map10: Much harder map than the rest. I was annoyed at how many times it took me to deal with the vile fight.. then I suddenly noticed there were megas in the arena. I was already invested in that area though and refused to use the megas in the end. The secret fight area was fun to deal with - just a quirky area. REALLY channeling new gazebo style in this map (sans viles in every fight which I appreciated a lot). I found myself wishing that the fight with the shotgunners -> viles and cyb played out a bit differently because once the cyb shoots the fight is kind of over. I was wishing that the cyb spawned into the arena after I ran into the area it started out in. Fun map though. The maps get better as the wad went on for me. I liked some of the visuals in map06 and then liked the gameplay of 01, 07-10 the most. Thanks for making the wad.

Killer5 Thanks a bunch for playing the wad, for the demos, and for your feedback. About the vile trope at the end of MAP04, I'm not the biggest fan of this trope either, but I do think there are rare times when it makes sense and can be fun. I was careful to only do it once in the entire wad though because of how overused it is. Sunder MAP07, MAP10, and actually MAP12 were some of the biggest inspirations on 10x10's MAP09, so good eye on that. I'm glad we feel the same way about MAP07 being one of the best maps in Sunder. I hadn't considered the player shooting everything from the lava at the end of my map, I would have increased the damage to 20% and made it all flat had I known. The wad's audience is aimed at a much lower skill level than yours though, so I was purposely very forgiving in a lot of ways. Thanks for making Zzul Bases, it was a huge influence on the design of this wad, believe it or not. I viewed ZB and EH as being maps made for mappers, rather than for the average player, and I took that unapologetic self-indulgent attitude to heart. Hence a secret map featuring gameplay that only 1% of DOOM players will enjoy Edit- ahh you fell off into the lava even further down than I thought, that's unfortunate. MAP10's demo desyncs for me, which is a shame because that's my favorite map.
