Lots of new bugs were introduced and performance was reduced significantly.
A quick example: EDGE 1.35 shipped with several demo wads highlighting EDGE features. In the 2.x branch, almost none of them work properly anymore. And we are not talking about features which have been depricated, we're talking about the bread-and-butter stuff like 3d floors, mirrors, portals and swimmable water. That in particular boggles my mind.

somebody have to fork 1.35 to ED6E (or what else wasn't used ;-). I've thought about it. If I could get it to build on windows for windows... Even just as a kind of Loboedge like k8vavoom...

I'll be splitting EDGE and 3DGE into their own entries on my Target list.

I don't mean to shit on the current dev: respect for taking up the reigns when Andy packed it in. But I think he bit off more than he could chew.

yeah. the new EDGE has alot of new features, but the userbase is very small, and it's hard to debug the engine. i mean, devs cannot play everything by themselves, we need people to report bugs. either a lot of people, or very dedicated testers (hi! ;-). and time, a lot of free time. also, adding new features is fun, fixing bugs is boring. ;-)
so, we have "old and stable" engine, and "new features, but unstable" kind. of course, it is easier (and more safe) to target the stable engine for now. maybe even fork it, fix some small bugs, but don't add a lot of new features to not break things. that doesn't mean that the new engine is worthless, they simply have two different goals.
something like that, i think. ;-)

From what I've seen, many bugs were there for years, they were reported over those years...and nothing was done. The dev is basically alone, single parent etc. so yeah.
And as for the new features: must be mainly internal I guess. The only new improvement I noticed was that "you have found a secret" message, which I love for some reason. And that incredibly annoying intro video. And I can't really think of anything else.
There were definitely lofty goals when the fork was made. But they never materialized.

So far i didn't experience any other bug. I have a little lag when i look directly down to the floor when the handgun with flashlight is equiped, and thats mostly because of my low pc specs, but aside from that, nothing bad. Seeing this mod made me realise the really low exposure EDGE has in the community. And i wonder why is it?
I have seen some developers talk, with ketmar here to verify, on the dsdehacked unlimited, and something there made me kinda laugh. Graf saying that port especific or locked down to port mods are a bad thing. Ok, one may say that with GZDoom having soo much port especific mods is kinda an stupid statement, but then i realise how wrong i was when i remembered that k8vavoom also supports decorate, and probably most gameplay mods for gzdoom. And probably there are other source-ports that i don't know that probably support it, too.
So has EDGE some port especific functions not shared with other source ports? I'm asking from a total ignorance of the matter as, if Lobo has't made this excellent Alien Mod, i would probably didn't downloaded EDGE to play and get amazed. One of the things that totally blowed my mind is how smooth and totally able to play it with full settings on my low end non hardware graphic card AMD10 with just an integrate graphic card of 1gb.
I remember trying Total Chaos low graphic version and it totally stalled all my PC functions. So it would be possible to port it to EDGE, for example, since the performance is soo good on lower end PCs?

sadly, EDGE has completely different way to define new things. DDF is very-very different from DECORATE, and some things are very hard (if possible) to port there or back. it would be a complete rewrite instead. for example, monster attacks are completely separate definitions in EDGE (including hitscan attacks, if i remember right), with their own set of properties. but in DECORATE you have several different code actions to initiate various attacks, and with a slightly different set of properties. in some aspects DDF is better designed than DECORATE, but… there are too much DECORATE code around already. i am slowly experimenting with DDF support in k8vavoom. but it's hard to marry DDF and DECORATE to allow seamless interop. i'm still not sure how to do it properly (or if it is even doable the way i want it). but i'm still have a hope. ;-)

ketmar thanks for the easily grasping explanation for illiterate people like me. Hope you can achieve adding it to k8vavoom. I wonder how Total Chaos would have worked on k8vavoom on my low spec pc (or if it is even fully compatible). I only have 3gb of HD space, so i'm not downloading TC to try for myself. Shame that i didn't knew about other ports that suported decorate when i downloaded that total space eater that Total Chaos is :/

alas, k8vavoom is quite demanding to GPU — all that lighting is a heavy thing. also, a lot of mods are using DECORATE wrong (especually big mods). GZDoom is quite forgiving, but k8vavoom is way more strict. it tries to fix some common DECORATE errors, but there's only so much i can do there. also, DECORATE has hundreds of code pointers, with a lot of various flags, and no strict specs. most of the time it works, but sometimes…
but the compatibility is quite high, and i'm constantly improving it.
but hey, it is a complete derail. i can talk about k8vavoom for ages, but this topic is about excellent Lobo's mod. ;-)

So getting back on topic: has anyone actually finished AEM yet? 😀

I have not. You said the maps were "throw-away", so I figured they were just a way to showcase AEM itself and I stopped after it became difficult to progress without my sentry.
Actually, I don't know if you did this in later levels, but including spawners to encourage sentry positioning might be a cool thing. After all, I only lost mine because I was dumb; I could have grabbed it easily. They aren't destroyable (I think?) and they definitely don't run out of ammo, so designing situations where leaving a sentry is the smart play would be pretty neat. Heck, spawner things would be useful in general.
I also had put AEM on hold anticipating some sort of update. >.>

The sentries can take some punishment but they are destroyable. Otherwise boss fights are too easy. You can even destroy them yourself with grenade fire.
I am going to update some of the maps sooner or later.
Also, what do you mean "spawner things"? Like an ambush were enemies appear? There are plenty of those already.

Just finished the set! Was a fun experience even if I got a little lost not knowing the visual language of the maps at first. I don't think I encountered any chestbursters in the demo. I got a crash when loading my save on MAP10 so I put on cheats when idclev'ing back to that and it was about the end anyway. I liked the 3D models and the versatility of the pulse rifle! Flares were useful too though I wasn't aware of them until nearing the endgame.

Glad you liked it. Did you notice the marine corpses that where lying face-up and twitching? If you shoot them a chestburster bursts out of their chest I'll check the map 10 save crash. I thought I fixed those: are you sure you're playing the latest version?

If the white armoured androids were shooting tracer bullets, then you've got the latest. I'll check later just in case.

Bumpity bump.
I'm still working on this, in parallel with EDGE-Classic development.
Which means it's using a lot of unreleased features from what will be EC v1.3 thus stalling another update.
But we're hoping to get EDGE-Classic v1.3 out the door before Christmas.
