I wasn't depressive, but I think I definitely had a screw loose growing up. But instead of seeing a psychiatrist or taking meds, I decided that smoking weed, getting laid, and playing in metal bands was much better for my mental health. Today, I'm a normal man living in the suburbs

In all seriousness, I sincerely hope there isn't a over prescription going on.
Opioid crisis comes to mind.

I think it's way worse now. Saw an article that something like 75% of college students are getting prescriptions just through their college doctor and it's not counting those getting them outside of the college. I vaguely remember a percentage like that. Of course they've been messing up grade school students and those percentages are probably much worse now.

I think young people:
A) take what they hear too seriously.
B) Are too inexperienced to know better.
I think some of it also has to do with "woe is me..." narcissism
While I don't deny some people legitimately have chemical imbalances, etc. I believe most people need to just work through their problem.

A lot of it also has to do with poor physical health. Maybe if people weren't stuffing their faces with fatty food, and turning into humanoid-pigs, playing video games, and sweating soda, they would have better mental health.
Fitness is key to happiness imo.
Some people just have an acute case of lazy ass.
I may project that I like to smoke weed and be a degenerate, but I have iron-discipline committed to fitness, frugalness, and reading. Subsequently it boosts my mental health as well.

People need to learn how to fucking cook too. Instead of buying some stupid shit at burger king, KFC, or pizza hut. Learn how to make your own food, and bring left overs for lunch the next day.
You will save money, and be healthier. Plus it is an important life skill that is necessary for independence. Even if you cook something considered fatty, it is all about portion control, and exercise to put the calories to work. I never eat after dinner, no fucking cookies, or chocolate, fuck that shit! You drink water if you feel hunger, until the next day. If you're hungry still, go to fucking sleep.
Plus when you cook something that tastes good, you feel good about what you've done. You can share it with others, who will show appreciation.
I think this is another important component to mental health.

I can go on forever about how much I hate psych drugs, why the fuck are they not viewed negatively by most people? The fact that they don't really have a high chance to work and that they sometimes worsen it should already say enough. And the chemical imbalance theory isn't even fully known to be true. Add to that the placebo effect, which probably does count for quite a lot of people who were helped by them. Okay, some are there who have actually tried everything, I do believe antidepressants should be used for them, as a last resort, but obviously it's used for way more people.
But yeah other than that, lifestyle changes are the way to go, I definitely agree with you on that. Maybe you didn't have a screw loose if you turned to be successful in life?
