Should I join a boxing gym next semester? Boxing is cool and I wanna be like Rocky Balboa, but I'm very skinny and I'm afraid I might get hurt (I also don't have health insurance). Plus I might be a little old to start. I used to do martial arts before, judo as a kid and aikido in high school, so I'm not a total stranger to this. What does the Boomer Boards hivemind think? Most importantly, do you think it'll help me get a cute trans gf?

Boxing is a great fighting style and complements other styles well, and quickly becomes effective compared to other stuff that takes longer to get good enough to defend yourself. No, you're not too old. Other than a year of TKD when I was a kid, I got back into martial arts at 21 and into Muay Thai plus Boxing at 25 and got an amateur Muay Thai title at 27. I'm skinny too and I didn't need my health insurance. Don't know how sturdy you are and what trouble getting hurt without insurance could be though. Any decent gym should be reasonable to a new guy. They're really screwed up if they're not. At least that's how it is in the states. There's the possibility that schools in your area are just way more hardcore off the bat, cause crazy Slavs and less pussies. I had to reject a trans girl I guess some people might consider cute.

Most importantly, do you think it'll help me get a cute trans gf? Do it, you'll get used to pain and become fearless, also brain injuries you'll sustain during sparring matches will turn you into a genius. Or a vegetable. And it sure as shit WILL help you find a trans gf, boxing will boost your confidence and you'll be able to knockout everyone with a single punch (probably), you can also use this technique on your trans gf in case she doesn't feel like spending the night with you. On a more negative note, boxing requires a lot of time and effort to get good at and it won't help you with your financial situation unless you want to become a professional boxer (for which you're too old anyway). On top of that boxing, just like any professional sports is very traumatic and all of the injuries you'll sustain will get worse as you grow older. So unless you just want to learn how to defend yourself and learn discipline, you should only go to the boxing gym as a side hobby.

Just popping by to give my prespective since I was into boxing from 16-25 years old (28 now). I would recommend it (or any martial art really, it doesn't have to be boxing) not for the physical aspect but rather the mental side of things. Even if you feel like you're confident now, you'll feel more secure knowing that you'll be able to defend yourself to the best of your ability. Even if you don't ever plan on getting into a fight, it'll make confrontations easier when you know that you have the upper hand. In fact, once you learn how to fight, you're LESS likely to get INTO a fight because you'll be more calm during an argument/confrontation/whatever. And you'll learn, especially with boxing, how to take a blow better in case some asswipe ever decides to hit you first. You won't become an unstoppable badass, but you'll feel more safe. Probably similar to the feeling people get when they start carrying a gun, I would wager.
I'm skinny too (three skinny fighters on one page, we should start a club or something), it doesn't matter. You'll be fighting people in your weight class, just like you see on TV. The training and sparring sessions will oftentimes take more out of you than your actual fights will. You can get injured, of course - I broke (well, they were already cracked) two teeth even with a mouthguard. And I won't lie, it's not a pleasant feeling at all when you're getting hit, although the day after is the worst.
It's also a great way of channeling your anger, and becoming more athletic in general (again, this will mainly come via training and hitting the gym). I know you're joking about the GF, but you'll feel more attractive because you'll be keeping yourself in shape, and because of your increase in confidence.
Even if you don't pick boxing as your combat of choice, there are plenty of good alternatives, and in all honesty you might want to look into wrestling or another martial art if you don't want to take the beating to your skull. Just make sure you find a reputable trainer/gym and not a McDojo as they call them here in the states (you can look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about).
Have you ever measured your reach or the size of your hands?
Anyway good luck man.

Stop being a bitch and just fight people on the streets like a man, you'd just be giving money away to big boxing.

Briefly tried boxing but never really caught me, not enough body contact, too much distance. Been doing judo for 20+ years and I'm just too used to viscerally feeling the weight of my opponent as I gently send them rocketing to the cold floor. Much more cathartic imo.

I've never been involved in boxing or similar but spent a long time in a profession with a lot of physical confrontation. Having to deal with those situations in a pragmatic and disciplined manner was an invaluable experience for many reasons. Not least of which is knowing how to defend myself and others. I'm sure boxing brings plenty of similar positives to the table. Physical and competitive activities in general are great for a man's mental and physical health anyway. If you're considering it you should probably just do it.

Thanks lads. I think I'll go for it once I'm done with my visa shit. I've now been in a few situations where I wish I knew how to properly throw a punch so it'll be useful fasho.

Remember, even Rocky sweeps the leg.
EDIT: Just a tip. The spinning back sweep movies (such as Rocky 5) show all the time is too damn slow. Use something quicker and more direct. Even back in high school, mostly untrained except I had a year of TKD when I was much younger, some guy tried that sweep on me and I just moved in closer and jammed it. I could have booted him in the ass and sent him forward on his face, but it was more of a friendly demonstration so I wasn't going to act like a jerk and make him look that bad. Really someone wise to that sweep could do some devastating damage to someone trying it if they wanted.
