So, a little while ago (Early last year to be specific), while I was stuck on my Windows XP, I was playing around with all kinds of old source ports, and eventually fiddled a lot with WinDoom. If you aren't aware, WinDoom was essentially the beta for Doom 95 which was being developed by Microsoft, and can run from the most recent Windows 11 all the way down to Windows 3.1. As such, I had no issues using it for a while before getting a new PC (And my XP dying on me) however, being a prototype, it was a liiiiittle broken, such as the game crashing when trying to load HELP2 on the title screen for Doom 1 or the fullscreen function just not working. So, having nothing better to do, I began digging through the executable in a hex editor, and actually managed to fix a few of these things. And now, a few months later (Not developing; I just forgot about it lol) I present to you: Chippy Doom!
Alternate Download: chord-book.com/DARE/Roebloz/doom.html
So before anything, I just want to put out a disclaimer: Unless your main operating system is Windows 3.1 (And if it is then this might be), this is NOT the definitive version of Classic Doom, not even vanilla Doom, this is purely for those who want to toy around with WinDoom (More specifically the June 14, 1994 build) but want some small fixes as well as instructions on how to use this damn thing. (Which is included in the INSTRUCTIONS.txt file inside the zip file) So yeah, if you're a weird hipster and you want to use this hip cool prototype Doom port, then go ahead. However, I have actually made something pretty original (I think); As I was able to find them via hex editing, this contains not only just the regular WinDoom executable reskinned and with like, 2 bugs fixed, but also features an original idea I had: Why can't you choose your own border texture? So you are getting a total of 32 different combinations of different border flats at your disposal!!!! Just grab the one you want off the ones available, overwrite the executable and you are set for a different border!!! Pretty cool right? I think it's pretty cool.
Well, anyway, this is just a small experiment I made and I felt like sharing. So now, if you want to play WinDoom with a few fixed bugs and custom border flats, download today! Otherwise, keep using whatever port you're using like a regular functioning human being.
I don't think I'll update this much, but one thing I might do eventually (Emphasis on might) is make a proper source port that brings WinDoom's weird menus and stuff, but I guess we'll have to see. (If I ever make that though, I'll also include a bunch of wacky and completely useless features, for sure)
Anyway, have fun with this little thing for now. Bye-bye, enjoy your chocolate chip cookie Doom!
