Hey guys, Check out my versions of some classic Doom2 maps. I remade the first few levels of Doom2 in my own image. I worked on making a fun game play experience, so try out pistol starts too. Played the first 2 maps a dozen times now, enjoying a bunch so far. Since i find FDAs insulting to my intelligence, i can't be of much help in that department. What i can do tho is to provide some demos of me speedrunning playing fast. Checked out the demos last night, thanks @panurge those were awesome. And this was a fun excuse to get DSDA-Doom running, which a really cool port I wanted to try, lol.

Highlight of the mapset for me is getting the secret BFG from MAP03 and using it in MAP04. I love good looking maps with only stock Doom2 textures and clever gameplay like these.

use3d oh, stap it I'm working on a better routing for map04, but man today is so fuckin' hot in here and i'm getting a lot of fatigue from this heat. Let's see if by night-time things get a little better. I was gonna ask if i missed any additional weapons on map03 (because of the cells in the last secret), but Joe went ahead and spoiled the whole thing.. well, so much for avoiding using iddt and idclip. Thanks a lot, Joe! oh shit, nevermind that.. i've confused map03 with map02.. sorry, my old brain rot again. So, map02. Last secret (the room behind the BoH spawn) contains cells - have i missed something there or it was just for continuous playthrought? If i did miss, please a yes will suffice. I'll like to find it on my own

@panurge I don't think you missed anything in map2, but I'm glad you mentioned the ammo in the secrets. I want to make ammo very tight and those cells probably don't need to be in there!

joe-ilya I watched your demos last night, you got some good moves. I was happy to see you nab the megasphere in map5 on your first attempt, that was slick. I also noticed some monster closets and a few other minor issues that did not work correctly in map5 from that port, but I never had an issue in zdoom. I will have to look into that. And Map2, I swear I saw a revenant rocket activate a lift line-special? Isn't that an old Doom engine bug? Anyway, overall everything seems to be mostly working at the moment, thanks for playing these and making your demo!

The text file says the wad requires a limit-removing source port, implying it needs to be run at Crispy Doom or PRBoom+ -complevel 2, playtesting with ZDoom is a far stretch from limit-removing compatibility.

Yes, I'm still in-between computers with my Doom stuff, and don't have a lot of time to put into playing on all the other ports, that's why these demos are so helpful. Despite all the great things I've heard about Crispy I have yet to even try it.

I was really hoping to get this done under the 7 minute mark by rushing at the start, but it's so easy to get mowed down by those chaingunners while trying to hold the lifts from getting up.
Then when i've finally got to a good rhythm and managed to pull off this strat with some consistency.. the game said "nope" and start killing me with the most random things - revenant rockets following me to the yellow key room, multiple blockmap fuckups, Baron of Hell getting to the arachno pit, lol. So i had to settle down with a more "tactical" approach. Lots of fun in this map tho, my favorite so far. Let's see what's waiting for me at map05, *clicks dd_b1.bat, idclev05, peeks to the monster count* oh my...
Attachment DeletedThere you go use3d , had some fuckups here and there.. but maybe you'll find some entertainment on that Man i've gotta say, nice boob job you've done on The Crusher - it looks sexy as fuck and give my hands juicy spots to palp. But i have to confess that on this one i had to use cheats to find those cryptic secrets (as the only one i was able to find was the soulsphere). I don't mind cryptic stuff tho, so don't take this as a criticism. I like when mappers take risks. There's always that unique satisfaction in finding such well hidden things on your own. But unfortunately i wasn't able to do so on this map lol. (3/5 secrets, iddt and idclip was enough, but the computer map one i had to open the pwad on Doom Builder in order to find it - that pesky little switch.. bloody hell). Anyways, thanks for sharing! I had a blast playing thru your maps. Enjoyed all of them (my favs are 04 and 05). Sorry for not giving you a more in depth analysis.. but you'll have to count on the other dorks around here to provide you that. I'm a simple man, you know? As a devout of St. Petersen, i interpret maps throught the lens of his Three Commandments: - Fun to play
- Beatable with pistol-start
And your maps tick all the boxes. One thing tho.. i would replace the invulnerability sphere ( map05's boss' chair secret) with a BFG instead.

Here're my FDAs if you're interested in that sort of things. Everything was pistol started on UV and recorded with glboom-plus 2.5.1.5 -complevel 2.

sosh Yes very much interested! Thanks for taking the time to play and record the entire set. You had some pretty close calls there and a couple moments where I thought it was over! The cyberdemon fight in map5 for instance. Did you like the maps? Improve anything? Change anything?

Did you like the maps? Improve anything? Change anything? The maps were fairly good and I'd put them on better end of OG Doom (2) map remix projects. IMO the maps are fine as is, though I've found the use of viles on map02 rather questionable (notably the one that appears in SSG area) and I'm not sure whether the possibility of shooting down that cyberdemon for free in map05 is an oversight or not.

@panurge I almost missed your update! Thanks for the demo, feedback and nice words. Yes I like secrets that might require more than one attempt. It seems to be a heavy point of contention with many, the proposal of playing the map more than once gets people a little heated lol. I've always mapped for my own enjoyment first, if anyone else likes them it's purely accidental. As far as other feedback, it looks like lots of cool high-profile wads are on the scene, no ones going to care too much about old remakes of levels they've played dozens of times. I'll consider changing that invulnerability sphere to a BFG, there was also to be another secret out in the Crusher room near the backpack that could house an invul sphere. sosh The archie in the super shotgun room is a little dickish, but it's also a primer course to being aware of the MARBFACE texture that precedes his arrival. I also hoped most players would be ass-deep in imps then suddenly be torched from behind to create a fun panic moment, hehe. Yes the cyberdemon fight can be cheesed, I figured you only approached it in that way due to your low health at the time. If engaged directly you are rewarded with equipment and better combat opportunities. I'll leave that to the player to decide what is more fun to them. I'll have the beta up for a few more days then get to work on a new release version for idgames. Thanks again everyone, the smaller group here is more suited for low-key wads like this I think.

01 Cool take on entryway. Cool designs and nice texture alignment. Reminds me of Hell Revealed 1. My chainsaw did a lot of heavy lifting. Felt like I had to kill a lot of monsters with the pistol before I got that first chaingun. I had a good time, otherwise. 02 I don't remember underhalls having this many archviles I died a lot. This map is tricky if you don't get the monsters-only operated secret areas. Is there another way to get these? It seems like if I miss them, I'm screwed. To beat this, I farmed some shotgun drops from the shotgun guy corpse seedlings I left near the first archvile which made the rest of the map a bit more manageable. I was swimming in shotgun shells towards the end. 03 Not bad. I didn't notice the floor move up/down barrier in front of the shoot switch. I thought I softlocked the map after I got that bfg secret. Once I figured that out, everything else seemed fine. The fight at the end was a lot of fun. Good job! 04 Oh cool, waste tunnels and the focus mashed up into one! I had a lot of fun with this map. The early soulsphere and supershotgun helped A LOT. There was one moment where I was pretty dry of resources and nearly surrounded by lost souls, spectres and imps, but on the whole there was enough resources for me to get by, which I sincerely appreciated. The baron that spawns in after you activate the trap with all those lost souls kinda sucks, especially if I decide to fall down. Made sure not to make that mistake twice. Little known fact, the window shutters that go up and down stop 8 units above the floor before going back up. In Doom 2's MAP04: The Focus, the floor is sunk 8 units and the inside lower walls are untextured so the shutters close all the way and you can't see it. American McGee is a nut. I had a lot of fun with this one. Very nice! 05 I had to drop off here. I got pretty far before I took a revenant rocket to the back, and I'm out of time to give it one more try . That lift in the crusher room is one of the toughest lifts I've ever had to catch! You gotta be fast for that one! Took me several tries. Lots of cool traps and encounters in this. Nice job. I had some time to check out your demos 40oz. You have an interesting approach, from cautious to bold and back again! And some interesting weapon choices. Use those rockets! Why must barrels be pistol shot?? Lol, probably conserving ammo which is good. Really funny barrel kills in map2 as well. No one has managed this yet, but in map3 all the items in the BFG secret can be obtained by running straight forward. No need to deviate, the teleporters are set up to take you to all the goodies. About the shutters in map4, I probably did know that at some point but have long forgotten. This isn't the first time I've ripped these off, they appear in some of my old megawad maps too. OMG the lift in map5! You made this much harder than it is, and the second person to attempt it this way which is so funny to me. You can make the lift just by dropping down in front of the blue armor and running straight for it, then over the little gap with at least 2-3 seconds to spare. You also went right past the rocket launcher which is in a small room on the Crusher platform..that would have saved your skin in the area past the red door! If you make another attempt please record it, these were really entertaining. Thanks again for playing.
