Hmm... I think this is my choice but it's hard to say, 5 WADs isn't enough.
1 - Doom 2 - I love it, never get tired of it, and most importantly, I need it to play the other 4 WADs.
2 - DBP37: AUGER;ZENITH - Well, I need a DBP in here somewhere. A little bit for vanity but mostly because I think it's a strong showing for everyone involved and because I like going back and revisiting it for personal nostalgia reasons as well. Plus, it's the longest DBP in terms of real levels.
3 - Lost Civilization - Great adventure map set with really big levels that will keep me busy a while. Plus it's just a fun world to get immersed in.
4 - Sunder - I like the big, grand architecture and big fights, plus its pretty fun on ITYTD. Plus, I think I'll want one big hard WAD to play occassionally. It's also pretty long so even if it isn't a full 32-level megawad, it'll probably keep me busy for a while.
5 - Eternal Doom - I've been meaning to replay this for a while but want to have the free time to just shut out the outside world and get immersed in it. If I'm stuck on a desert island, that'd be the perfect time to do so.

I'll assume all the IWADs are available to me; if not of the ones available I'd pick Ultimate Doom. It's probably nostalgia but it's my favorite of all the IWADs, in particular E1 and E2. I will assume for this exercise the PWADs are playable without the IWAD though, because in that case Doom2.wad is practically the only choice. I'll also assume port requirements don't matter (i.e., doesn't need to be vanilla-compatible). From there: 1. Eternal Doom - A timeless classic. 2. XmasDoom Ultimate - Need something to rotate in once a year as a "treat"; of all the holiday-themed ones this is my favorite for some reason. 3. Auger;Zenith - It's special to me; everyone did such amazing work. 4. Sunder - Need some genuine challenge in there as it will be a long time (I hope  ) 5. Nostalgia Ain't What It Used To Be - Yes it's self-serving and probably conceited but I would want to bring at least one of my individual creations with me, and this is my largest self-made work. This was a fun exercise, I liked it. |

I am assuming that my island laptop has a copy of DOOM2.WAD, and that I can include gameplay mods and not just mapsets.
1. Eviternity - Love this mapset, a modern masterpiece. An excellent showing all around, I cannot think of a single criticism. (Okay, MAP32 is a fucking slog, but...)
2. AUGER;ZENTH - Everyone's posting it but I really have fallen in love with this mapset. Incredible map design and artistic direction that makes Doom feel like a BUILD game in all its meticulous detail.
3. Scythe 2 - The first megawad I sunk my teeth into and boy does it still go hard. I'll come back to this every so often. A real passion project -- Not many people can say they made a full 32-map megawad on their own.
4. Reelism 2 - This might be cheating a bit but Reelism 2's built for endless pick-up-and-play fun.
5. Final Doomer - Final Doomer really adds a little extra to playing through other mapsets. Definitely a force multiplier for the above three mapsets I have above.

Bringing these up in spur of a moment. - Resurgence — Environment themes are long tried, but Resurgence is fairly immersive nonetheless. Not to mention its blood-pumping action.
- Unholy Realms — Vanilla style mapset which I've liked to regularly come back to. Fast, short and simply elegant.
- Return to Hadron — Make a tech-base WAD with all the mapslots filled with copies of single one map of his, and I will play through it from the beginning to the end.
- REKKR — Northern Europeans are alright, axe-wielding ones to very least.
- Eternal Doom — For the most exquisite of Team TNT's goodness.

I remember this question from a certain Doom podcast that i've listened in many many moons ago. I've never understand the need to present such convoluted scenario just so one could give his top 5 of favorite mapsets. Are you autistic or something?
Answering the question. If i ever find myself in such situation, the last thing that i'll be doing is playing video games. I would rather enjoy the high defintion graphics provided by the tropical vista, do some fishing and maybe put some survival skills to test playing real life Rust and PvP-ing with the wild life in the vicinity (if they exist).

Asking for my favorite 5 wads would have resulted in different answers. Asking the question framed in this way determines which wads offer the most longevity/replayability. What's possibly more autistic is asking people to not word things in creative ways and instead use direct communication.

I'm just amusing myself and maybe others that saw the stupidity of what i've posted. Remember what i said to you? Try to see if it's in fact an intetional offense or just a goofy joke. Look, i have an autist brother. His name is Matheus, he's 27 years old. He's walking behind me as i'm typing and nagging me to stop and go dine. I love him with all of my heart. I help my mother to take care of his needs every single day. Down the block, my grandaunt has a nephew that's also autistic. They come visit us every week or so. Maybe others in this forum also have people with autism in their families. Still, I don't have problem using words like autistic or retarded. My irl friends and me all share the same sense of humour. Sometimes i go heavy on them and they go heavy on me. It's all cool. We don't take these things to the heart. I'm just trying to be more authentic here.

I have trouble answering this question because over the past few years I've pretty much only looked at Doom wads through the lense of inspiration for what I can create myself. I've grown to really love my own creations and in practice really enjoy seeing the new stuff I can come up with. And I've created much more than 5 wads that I love. Even then, my pursuit to create more is the main interest in Doom for me. If the act of creating my own content is not allowed in this scenario, then I'm not sure how much enjoyment I'd get out of anything.
When I do feel like playing Doom, (for fun, not for research) my usual go-to is to open up Oblige and generate something that fits my interests. Like a megawad where 85% of the monsters are revenants and you get a rocket launcher in the starting room every time. The Plutonia Experiment is the only wad I can think of that I often go back to just fuck around in. Most stuff doesn't really hold a lot of replayability to me so in this scenario I'd hope I die on this island early.
