I liked create-a-skater in the tony hawk games, because at the time I didn't know any of the real skaters and I didn't always want to be a real existing person. I liked picking out the outfits I'd wear if I could afford the clothes, and maybe a cool haircut. But in fantasy games and especially games that use space marines, the level of detail that goes into the customization is so stupid. It's especially stupid in shooter games where most of my enemies will be killed from a distance and I'm not going to stop to look at their fingernail colors or the print on the bottom of your shoes without getting shot.
Sometimes i just want to make my guy red.
Well too bad because we created this massive dialog of character customization so that you pick every individual color of every superfluous detail of your person that it will take you at least an hour and a half to come up with a decent outfit that far supercedes the level of personalization you could possibly care about!
I usually just leave whatever the default is even if it makes me a noob. It's so fucking boring.

The app Reface allows you to basically make deepfakes, and put them on videos and memes. You just upload a picture, and it re-skins the face automatically. They should include this technology into player face customization.

@contracommando that sounds like something thats on the way in the near future.
Tony Hawk Underground 1 had a feature like that but I never cared to learn how to use it.

I feel like it depends on the game, in particular how immersive it's supposed to be. If it's some arcadey multiplayer arena shooter then yeah, who gives a crap. If it's a semi-realistic open world RPG with a lot of freedom in choosing how your character lives their life, it makes sense that you would be able to customize all this stuff.

it depends if it's a single player game or not.. in sp games i like cutting through enemies while wearing powerful looking armor and wielding a shiny sword and in mmos where you spend a lot of time in non pvp areas it matters because i'm a guild master and want to stand out while also blending and look approachable.. people often express themselves through their avatar in roleplaying games and it's not a bad thing.. on the other hand seeing people put fortunes into CS weapon skins is mindblowingly cringe because no one cares about your immersion breaking bright spraypainted cartoonish looking orange gun while they're trying to shoot you, or atleast i don't.
