Vizcarra made several political enemies during his two years in office, as he worked to combat corruption throughout the country's legislature. Half of the lawmakers are under investigation or indictment for alleged crimes including money laundering and homicide.
As a result Martin Vizcarra was recently removed by legislators and was replaced by Manuel Merino.
Massive protests took to the streets by those unwilling to recognize Manuel Merino's authority as Peru's president. Merino has stepped down in less than one week. Peru's Congress has elected legislator Francisco Sagasti as the country's interim president for now.
