I've become introduced to a term called doomscrolling which is when your social media feeds are saturated with so much shocking, horrible, depressing news that you scroll by reading every headline, post, and comment, filling your perception of the world to be this abysmal, tragic, bottomless pit of corruption, injustice, and disasters everywhere you turn. You passively accept this reality. You become numb to it. Youre so emotionally desensitized that nothing too horrible has the same effect. You feel powerless.
I can relate to this at times. Sometimes it makes me feel hopeful that I can make a difference in the world, but others it makes me feel like a tortured soul. It's not good.
Doom scrolling is connected to the new generation of "Doomers." Not to be confused with actual Doom players, but if we're being honest, this forum has accidentally acquired a double meaning in that way. Doomers being the generation of millenials that are at odds with the behemoth of late stage capitalism and government corruption. Its the only thing on their mind. But in the Americanized culture of individualism, there is not a fighting chance to resist it, and so they submit. They ride the wave of depression and loneliness and just watch the world burn.
Being lonely, depressed, and anxious is all too common. Since everyone's social media feeds and internet experience is personalized to them, I think it might help if you tell us a little bit about what you do on the internet most days. What your daily routine is like. Do you use the internet with a particular purpose in mind? What kinds of content do you consume on the daily without you actively seeking it?

Lately, almost strictly Doom/Edge related stuff. Almost never watch/read the news these days. And do you know what? I think my overall mood is much improved because of it.

Surrounding yourself with negative energy is bound to make you negative as well. People dismiss this as bullshit because "energy" makes it sound like something my 50 year old aunt who's a yoga coach would say (don't get me wrong I love my aunt), but I strongly believe in this. You are what surrounds you. That's why I mostly read news about COVID in order to know the measures, the news from my hometown and major "worldwide" news in general. Basically only enough to not be considered someone who lives under a rock. I'm vibing tbh. I think the world is actually quite alright and will be alright too. If it were as bad as some say, we'd probably be dead or something. Or everything would've ended long ago. Do you use the internet with a particular purpose in mind? To kill time and fuel my dopamine addiction mostly. I really only refresh reddit and instagram and stalk strangers.

I don't understand this hopeless doomer generation thing. Is modern world really that bad? Don't we have like best technologies/opportunities/medicine/etc in history? You can connect to anyone in the world, you can learn most skills from home for free, you can easily access the best works of art of any culture, you can monetize almost any hobby you're really good at, you can jack off to 10 HD porn clips simultaneously, you can even choose your gender apparently. Life is fucking good.

I don't suscribe to social media, but I exist in exactly this state for over a year with no exit due to all the shit that's going on in my country. Things leak to me through real life anyway. Reading news just once a week is enough to maintain feeling of inescapable terror. @memfis, you live in Russia, and yet you say this. Or have you actually fled the country? There is not a single second I feel safe here. Safe from possible torture by the state and unjust trial. My mind is constantly thinking about going to jail in future, being wrongfully accused of extremism/terrorism, because all is needed for these accusations to succeed is someone's fake confession, extracted under torture. You don't even need to do anything wrong or actually have a chance to do something detrimental to regime. If they don't like you, they can do this. I fucking need to get out of here.

Seriously, do something useful with that time. Learn a skill, read a book. Then teach other people that skill. Whatever, just get off Twitter.

@memfis, I apologise for being so brush towards you in the morning. I just can't shake certain things off my head, you are actually not the only one who does not find life bad.
Today it actually got a little better for me, hopefully I'll be able to get more positive side of things. Also, I am trying to do useful things in my free time, however, it really requires me to force myself to "undertake work" in compulsive manner every day, otherwise racing thoughts prevent me from beginning it.
Another issue is that I can't get productive with Doom anymore, I don't know how the hell I managed to get into DBP23, I can't repeat this stuff. I actually started maps and got nowhere with several past DBPs. Maybe next month will provide an easier theme? I still lack skills to both conceive and build a cool map, especially in a month timeframe and with a theme I spend half a month trying to understand how a map should look, usually only getting it when other people release maps and by then the time limit is really close. Creative work is actually the most rewarding when one succeeds, other kind of activity does not really compare to it, but the problem is that I can't get anywhere with mapping as of late. I actually never wanted to resign to merely testing other people maps, although that too is an important activity.
The last paragraph is related in a sense that actually making a map really helps fight depression, it was a sanity saver when lockdown happened.
But on topic I perhaps read net the least, but whatever I read, is always some bad political shit. Some of it is because it gets mentioned on this forum, or because banking service keeps me reminding about voting and other shit, which sends me on a triggered path again. Another (rare) source is someone in real life bringing up an issue I didn't heard of. Same with COVID, I actually want read no shit about it, because it also triggers me, but all kind of apps have ads related to it (especially on official channels that automatically add themselves and cannot be removed, this really stinks) and other people got very dependent on apps for communication, getting to talk to them without messengers is hard. I don't like messengers like at all, and all this "online"/app-addicted people culture, by which I mean people that are almost so crazy you could stand next to them and they would only talk to you through texting, is not yet literal situation but we are getting close to that. And lockdown made it a really uphill battle to get a real connection with other people. I am an extrovert and can't handle being locked out from proper, face-to-face, communication long-term.

Dunno. I feel like actively disengaging with the news and the political - despite the utter disgust I feel for most of it - would be both dishonest and take 10 years of life from me. I am an undead creature animated entirely by malignant spite at this point, a vampire of contempt. I do understand people who have just become apathetic and remove such unrelenting bad news and negativity from their life, but retreating into an echo-chamber of your own creation only serves to empower the vicious hacks who run this never-ending carousel of idiot fuckery.
All it takes for retardism to triumph is for sane men to turn off their ears and say nothing. It follows that someone has to pay attention.
Even with that said, my facebook mentions still read like clumped graffiti on an asylum wall, written by a legion of absolute madmen who utilize smeared shit as their medium of choice.

Everyone is telling you the world is ending and that it's gonna get worse. Maybe they're right but you should still try to improve yourself. I keep seeing memes about how bad 2020 is as if they have no control at all over their lives but for me at least, it's treated me very well. I got my first job, in a well-paying field that I really enjoy and gives lots of opportunity for personal growth, had some personal projects that were very well received and got in better shape (still have a lot to work on that front though).
I worked really hard to get where I am and maybe I was also lucky, luck that other people might not have but you owe it to yourself and those around you to try as hard as you can. Even if I had luck I was bold and worked really hard from scratch for what I have.
If 2020 so far is the worst people think the world has ever been, then you haven't been a soldier surviving 4 years of brutal war and then returning home only to see your family die of the Spanish Flu or freezing your ass off in the Eastern Front with barely any equipment. People are getting way too comfortable. I keep tabs on the corona situation and all the weird, bizarre political ideas (re)cropping up all over the world but you won't solve anything if you let it affect you. It's like the last 100 years are starting to repeat themselves. Don't piss your life away on this garbage news, especially not hot takes on Twitter from mediocre people.

Covid is gonna kill you. Cops are gonna kill you. Global warming is gonna kill you. Asteroid is gonna kill you. Foreigners are gonna kill you. 5G is gonna kill you. Nile virus is gonna kill you. Earthquakes are gonna kill you. Nuclear energy is going to kill you.
YOU'RE GOING TO DIE! This the the constant media message being bombarded into peoples heads, all day every day.
Turn that shit off.

And yet, many Westerners have been conditioned to think that the world is a horrible place right now.

You have to be actively looking for bad and sad things on social media to be depressed, for it to keep on feeding you the algorithm that you shaped for it.

I keep seeing memes about how bad 2020 is as if they have no control at all over their lives but for me at least, it's treated me very well. There is no "as if" here. There are people who lost control over their lives in this pandemic, and are nowhere near regaining it. The fact that some other people managed to gain during it does not cancel it out. The 2020 is not the worst in the worlds history of course, but may have been one of the worst in some people's lifetime (a much shorter timeframe that is), there is nothing to be surprised about. Only personal experience is relevant here, who cares about "worse times" if you could never lived there. Worse may yet to come, and whether it does or not, it does nothing to change the current predicatement.

Morbid curiosity and the urge to provoke thought (among other things) begs me to ask and wonder how much more of the Internet will bleed and meld into "real life." When you stare into the abyss it also stares back into you, and thou shall make note to remember that every monitor is indeed a black mirror where demons may lie....
Heh.
