I've always loved ipods but the harddrive always crashed on me after a year or two. Recently it piqued my interest to check out alternate MP3 players. Streaming music on my phone is fine but I don't like to use my data where there's no wifi, and it would be nice to not have to drain my phones battery life just to listen to music. I saw this thing called a Ruizu on a tech review channel on youtube. Only about $25! It's no ipod, the interface is a little sluggish but it has a microSD slot for up to 128 gb of storage. It's pretty sweet except I have to use the folder view mode to scroll through my music. Something about the way the music player sorts music clips band names and song titles if they have too many characters, and some of my music doesn't even show up in the artists list. Not sure why. Other than that its a pretty dope music player for cheap. I'm no audiophile but according to the reviewers, the sound quality is really good too.

I have one of these: www.amazon.com/dp/B00VR5JHVK?tag=duckduckgo-ffab-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1on the basis that you get what you pay for. Which seems to be true; I've dropped it on concrete on multiple occasions over the 3 years or so I've had it and it's still going. Battery life's not that great, about 12 hours, which I blame entirely on the screen (I'd really like a high quality mp3 player that just has an old timey lcd screen, because all I want to know is what the name of the song I'm listening to is, and I guess the album and band too. Fuck album art and stupid menu themes and other useless shit). Band names with accented characters tend to end up with Chinese characters in them which is weird, but it handles eg. gnophosband.bandcamp.com/album/- just fine, which I really wasn't expecting. Sound quality's good but tbh that's more a function of your headphones than anything else. Dunno what the biggest SD card it can handle is either but if you've got too much shit on there scrolling through it all's a pain in the arse so who cares?

Hmm, I find it difficult to justify walking around with two different devices when you can conveniently have everything on your phone with a 32 GB SD card or something (and no problems like long song titles or weird characters). But then again I'm also carrying a portable charger, which technically could count as a second device I guess, so maybe it's not really that different...

I see what you mean. I felt like that at first too. What piqued my interest is that both the Ruizu and Fiio both have Bluetooth capabilities. I intend to get a nice stereo but for now I have portable bluetooth speakers around the house, and this mp3 player acts like a remote control. The battery life is pretty fantastic. I can go almost four days (~8hrs/day) listening to it nonstop on a single charge
