For the longest time I thought Asuka was best girl because of how energetic and fun she is, then I thought about Misato with her mature charms, but now after all these years I've come to the conclusion that if I were to decide which girl is best girl in Evangelion I would have to say Rei. Rei exhibits the ideal composition of manners, beauty, cuteness, and possesses the potential to continuously grow and achieve greater self-actualization. Some may just call her a doll, but she is very well capable of thinking for herself and I want to see her smile more. I want to make her happy! I relate to her confusion on how she is supposed to feel at times. I may not know how to describe every facet of my adoration towards Rei but I just want it to be known that I believe she truly is the best girl. Of course I must also mention Kaworu because I always wanted to hang out with him and have him speak to my soul. Truly they are angels. This spoiler contains a precious memory of my time with Kaworu:

Normally I would ignore this sort of thread, but I just finished re-watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion, so figured I'd chip in. The main 26-episode run is a pretty decent show, and certainly one of the more tolerable anime I've watched as of late, with characters having motivations you can understand, plus depth and something approaching well-realised mindsets. It's a bit extreme, with how paralysed with indecision Shinji gets, or how "tsundere" Asuka is, but then so is the situation. What the characters are not, for the most part, is likeable. Makes sense, as they're teenagers, and are generally dealing with long-term trauma, loss and the end of the world, but they're often selfish, over-reactive and unpleasant. The exception, as you've alluded to, is Rei, who is strange in her own ways (being a series of clones of somebody's dead wife would do that, I suppose... If I understood her origin correctly!), but placid and follows orders, even sacrificing herself for the good of the team when she sees she can't be rescued. A team of her (entirely doable, if the "soul" they mention could be replicated into the spare bodies) piloting a few EVAs would've been very effective at keeping the angels at bay, compared to Asuka's uneven performance and Shinji often being bailed out by Unit-01's frequent berserk sprees.
Saying all of that, Misato is by far the most well-rounded adult main character and has a cool car, her own place, enough spare income to keep an exotic pet and a couple of teenagers under her roof and knows how to party/unwind. I would suggest that, ethics of running child soldiers aside, she's the best character and probably an earlier example of a strong woman in anime. I've deliberately avoided the whole "waifu" angle, and won't meet the show sexualising the 14-year-old girls on it's own terms (c'mon Japan...), as I'm just not that guy.
The guy I am loves a good giant robot fight, though. Is there a similarly mature (as in, not full of childish characters and with a bit of a look at deeper subjects) series that does giant robot fights well? I've seen ID-0 and Aldnoah Zero on Netflix, and they were kind of what I was looking for, and (spoiler alert?) Attack on Titan kind of scratches the itch too, but a lot of other stuff like Kuromukuro seem to be built around irritating characters swooning over the main guy. A problem I have with a lot of anime, to be honest.

Oh yeah definitely. Misato's a badass for sure and to me was best girl before the skies cleared for me with Rei. Excellent preference in character indeed.
I haven't seen many mecha shows lately and most I've seen just have mecha things in them rather than showcasing giant robots but as for other mecha anime that I have seen all I can say Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (less robots more Machiavellian scheming), Armor Hunter Mellowlink (which is about a single man taking out Mechas like in Metal Gear Solid which I quite liked), and I guess the first season of Code Geass which is a roller-coaster ride before the second season's extreme roller-coaster ride (three cheers for Machiavelli). As for mecha anime I haven't seen there's stuff like Macross Plus, and Bokurano which I believe is one of the more darker series out there. Oh yeah I just remembered that I should give Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex a go and finish watching Patlabor 2.

I did like the Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. The first half is indeed a great bit of scheming and ends very well. The latter half did go crazy. It's a shame Lelouch of the Resurrection never made it to Netflix, as I could do with more of that.
GitS:SAC was pretty good, but it does rather fall back on some strange anime tropes. Particularly with the mini spider tanks (I can't remember the names). They absolutely didn't need to have female child voices and personalities, but... Japan, you know? Still, it's a good sci-fi setting with some strong characters. The films generally work better for me.
Black Lagoon would be one I'd recommend. The setting is very over the top, but I think there's some maturity to the characters, even if a lot of the violence is low stakes for the intensity.

I don't think there's a wrong answer to "who's the best Eva girl?". I would say even for me it's Rei, and you already said well why Cuppy. Though I still relate a lot to Asuka for many things and it's difficult to resist to the charms of Misato. Plus, short to medium haircuts are the best :3 The guy I am loves a good giant robot fight, though. Is there a similarly mature (as in, not full of childish characters and with a bit of a look at deeper subjects) series that does giant robot fights well? I would suggest the first 3 series of Gundam if you like to watch older, and long, shows. The first series (0079) has a more "happy" mood and a "battle of the week" format but I enjoyed it a lot and in it has an overreaching plot and in the later parts it starts to have a good mystery too. Z Gundam, one of my favourites, is a very dark series and I think you can find something you'll like here. Like 0079 has the same "battle of the week" structure. Though they both have some childish characters.
Soukyuu no Fafner is pretty cool and it has some nice mysteries going on, but it's also full of teenage drama, you can give it a try I guess. And I want to end with Gasaraki which is the first show that came to my mind after your question. It's rather underrated imo. It has an interesting mystical aspect which is part of the plot, the second half gets more into politics and the mecha are put a bit in the background. I warn you that the ending is a bit of a clusterfuck tho.
Why didn't you like the tachikoma in SAC?? They are great side characters.

I certainly don't mind a long, slow show if it's any good. I'd be concerned about the reuse of footage and other cost-saving measures that come in older anime, but I guess that's a thing to try. Where would one watch something like the oldest Gundam series? None of what you've mentioned is on Netflix, which is my primary source for TV these days, although I do also leech off of an Amazon Prime account and personally subscribe to NowTV (it's a good source of South Park and has some classic drama on there... Although not indefinitely)
As for the tachikoma (thanks for reminding me)... I don't feel like they add to the show (and certainly weren't missing from the formula in the original film), have unnecessary little-girl voices and personalities and often Deus Ex Machina the show with their Swiss Army Knife capabilities.

None of what you've mentioned is on Netflix or This sucks because for lots of old shows and more underrated series there isn't a way to watch them legally in the west, then depends on the country too. This is also one of the reason why Eva was redubbed.
spoiler get fucked up if you edit the post
