This doesn't just pertain to video games, but all kinds of reviews. Can you really trust user reviews? Sometimes I see people give stuff like books abysmally low ratings, for trivial reasons while praising other aspects of it. I don't think it is a fair assessment, when someone's idiosyncratic bullshit drags perfectly good products down in rating. When reading these reviews on say Amazon, do you really give the lowest rating much attention, as the average?

I like when you go to some random ass website that seems like its trying to sell you something, and you can scroll down and see all the 2,000+ 5 star and 4.5 star reviews, and every person reviewing it has generally positive comments and has perfect headshots for profile pictures. Really? 2,000+ people registered accounts with this otherwise useless website just to say this product exceeded their expectations? These are some fuckin fake automatically generated accounts, for sure.

No, not really.
Some reviews are actually of some good when they're well written and expose legitimate problems or concerns, but 95% of the time I ignore them and check the said thing for myself to make my own mind.

One of the most common problems with reviews is that they tend to be too personal. So many people write them from their own point of view, while really they should be writing from the point of view of other potential customers. "I actually don't like love comedies but I decided to check this one out anyway" doesn't tell us anything about the movie, so cut it out. Don't talk about yourself, don't bring your real life experiences into your review. We don't care that this character ruined the enjoyment for you because he reminds you of your annoying boss too much. Reviews are written to inform others, not to rant about your psychological issues. And if you're not into love comedies, maybe you're not qualified to review them in the first place.

Lol that reminds me of the early /newstuff reviews when it was opened up to the public. The reviews would open up with stuff like "so I just woke up had a cup of coffee, and had an argument with my mom about my schoolwork and I was already having a bad day, and i was really hoping i could play a decent doom wad and goddamnit this didn't make it any better"
and then the review would conclude with something like "its an average techbase with average detail and average difficulty and average gameplay and its ok"
It's like 5 paragraphs with no information in it.

Memfis' post sums it up perfectly. Most of them should be ignored (including many I've left I'm sure) because it tells you more about the reviewer than the product itself, generally speaking.
