Thanks for taking interest Um, kinda off topic for this thread, but how would you answer that question i made? There's been a lot of good answers since you bumped it. I won the mapper of the year award in 2010, and I think a lot of it has to do with how many maps I made that year, so I think being prolific has a lot to do with. I don't think only making a few good maps is enough. I don't know what years each mapper was most prolific in without doing much research, but Soundblock, Erik Alm, Malcolm Sailor, Adelusion, pcorf, Richard Wiles, Kurt Kesler, Kim Andre Malde, and Yonatan Donner are all great picks.

I guess that thread likely disappeared quickly in a matter of hours. What was it about anyways?

What did he get banned for in the first place? He seems like a pretty normal guy to me.

Probably because he was spamming in the Losers forum. I was a loser that time and I remember he was posting some nonsense there and then Mordeth came and said "Upgraded to ban" and there was it. Shortly after, he created another account and made a thread where he openly insulted mods and admins for banning him. And then that thread and account were deleted entirely (keep in mind that it was before the forums changed). I definitely remember this. And now he created another nonsense thread just to get the last word. To me, this guy really seems like a looney (as dew said in that thread before it was deleted). I hope he never finds out about these boards or else I think we'll have another sarais.

Trust me, deadwolves needed a ban. Spammer, harasser of users - that shit just crosses the line. Opinions are fine but behavior like that just sucks. That thread was almost certainly bait but it did give me a good laugh!

Probably because he was spamming in the Losers forum. Didn't DW get rid of their Losers forum?

I hope he never finds out about these boards or else I think we'll have another sarais. Well there are some topics with links from here on DW iirc, so he might find about Doomer Boards eventually, not to mention the number of members registered on both forums.

I want to live in his shoes for a little bit. It's got to be hard to be on the defensive all the time.

It's got to be hard to be on the defensive all the time. Playing whiteknight to half a dozen dickchicks probably hasn't helped.

Do you enjoy watching streamers raging on your own mapsVery interesting topic pitched by roofi. I've been wondering if people get joy out of this for a while. I'm very particular about listening to all the negative body language and expressions. Sighing, shouting "FUCK" or asking "what is this?" or "Where was I supposed to go?" or anything else of that sort are things that I take pretty seriously in my mapping. I like my players to be challenged, enjoying the experience, and in control of what's going on in front of them. I think there is a bit of rise in new mappers seemingly making "fuck you" moments for the purpose of shocking or scaring or simply abruptly killing the player. Some streamers I've seen seem to be needlessly lenient and respectful to this kind of design, but it's almost criminal to me to waste your time making a map that's not enjoyable to the player in some ways. I often hear streamers complain about really long maps or maps with too many monsters or whatever, and somehow many mappers are responding to this by making longer, harder maps with many thousands of monsters. I think this is shamelessly cruel to Doom players which I'm afraid we don't have enough of.

Honestly, streamers feel like a huge waste of time. I do occasionally watch my map being played out of vanity, but they don't hold my interest due to impatient, unobservant play and overly vocal reactions. Suitepee in particular was terribly off-putting.

I agree Phobus. I'm apparently one of the 2% of people who don't want to hear some mushmouth turdbasket talking over a damn game.

Same here... or atleast when it comes to deciding if I want to buy a game, the worst is when said guy is trying to be entertaining.. ugh. Nothing is more grating to hear than when a game's volume is turned down, you turn it up only to hear that the voice is at normal volume. ;P It doesn't help that my maps aren't really worth commenting on, haha.

John Romero tweeted joshthenesnerd's twitch stream and popped in for a chat and was answering doom related questions. It was cute, he normally has like 2-5 viewers and then he had over a hundred. He was so nervous on stream to have JR in his twitch chat, it was adorable.

Mass debate on the topic of commissioning Doom mods over at the gulag. Linked to page 3 where sanity goes south. Who in the fuck is this Nine Inch Heels cunt? Surely this can’t be a real person? It’s gotta be somebody’s alt account, or an_mutt in a skirt. Woof. Feel sorry for poor Rex, trying to be an adult awash in a sea of spastic children. Thanks for the vivid terminology by the way darknation, I’m sure the end wording of my previous sentence snuck into my subconscious from your writings haha And for the record none of you cunts will get a dollar out of me for a Doom Map, Mod, or Midi. Not even my faves like Skillsaw, Tango and Cash. Well maybe memfy baby because he’s a Russian and must be poor and starving... hey they’re not all manly riding horses with no shirt on like Putin y’know. In the beginning id gave us the power of modding Doom, to be used for the power of good and sharing of fun and new things amongst the people of Doomkind. The Carmack John spoke firmly but wisely, that thou shalt not sell your sucky shit for profit, and so it was and it was good. Just because some of you has shit that ain’t so sucky anymore, you still ain’t getting paid.

Frankly paid mods/wads/whatever in itself isn't such an atrocious idea, after all who wants to keep on making stuff for free with nothing to gain. The problem is how terribly this idea was executed in the past, as we've seen some attempts in AAA games.
Remember that one time Skyrim mods got the green light to be sold? That did not go well at all. Plus if this ever becomes possible again imagine how many people would put a price tag on their shit.

haha, like these fucking tantrumming diaperfurs could ever pull their shit together enough to make more than sandwich money from their efforts. And even if they did, what are the efforts of one cucked wad-maker compared to the unimaginable power of a hundred legendary shitposters bringing the ruin to their reviews page? Fuck, tormentor and nick baker could barely stop their faux-vaginas squirting yellow piss out the sides of their nappies at honest criticism, and that was when they were working for free.
Imagine a world in which these entitled fucks have their fucking tardbux & hipster welfare at stake: it will be glorious.

Mass debate on the topic of commissioning Doom modsAnd for the record none of you cunts will get a dollar out of me for a Doom Map, Mod, or Midi. Not even my faves like Skillsaw, Tango and Cash. The other night I had a smoke session with my wife and it revealed to me a really cold hard reality. I waste a lot of fucking time making maps for nothing. I don't really know what I do it for. I waste a pretty significant amount of my life just at being a slave to the doom community. Giving people mapping advice, managing this community, promoting my work, listening to feedback, chasing popularity, etc. I do like what I do to some degree. However, ALL of my income comes from my actual job, which has nothing to do with what I actually enjoy doing in life. I just need to be useful to someone who's willing to pay me for something. When it comes to my everyday life, 95% of my expertise is given away for free. I was showing a coworker some maps I made recently and they were amazed. They asked me what the fuck I'm even doing here in this office. They told me I should check out this freelance work website called Fiverr. It's becoming pretty mainstream for people to make viable living or sidejob doing things they have the time and ability to do but isn't being applied in their normal line of work. This is exactly me. People who want to play my stuff for free are still very near and dear to me, so I'd make sure people like you still have access to my stuff. But with microtransactions / donations / and monthly payments becoming more mainstream, I think there's a very safe and fair way to get money from people who are willing to pay without putting barriers in front of people like you too.
