There's a new mappack based around the COPPER mod, called Coppertone Summer Jam 2020. highly recommended. start with Markie Music's map. (video sends to timestamp of Markie Music's map)
if the rest of the maps are as good as that one, it's on the level of Arcane Dimensions mappack

awesome, gonna dl the hell out of that quake conversion to doom. will go great with that QStuff Ultra v2 quake models pk3 addon i only got about 120 kills two tries in on that Coppertone markie music map last night, but i think it's less difficult than Coven of Ebony mappack from 2001 by Tronyn, that one is AWESOME and notoriously super difficult. just took me 5 tries to finish the first map on that. here's someone playing it on easy mode, the only video for this mappack on youtube unfortunately. and if you're new to Quake 1 also try DM4 Jam is one of my favorites. wonderful Episode 4 style vertical maps.
beautiful.

+1 for Nehahra and Arcane Dimensions. I have got to check out some of these other maps though, they look great!

yeah man Nehahra is imo better than the official mission packs! and it being the longest machinima to this very day is and will forever be a piece of video game history, much less quake history. all Quake fans, do yourself a favor and one day try to get around to all the map jams, they are the equivalent to the DBPs! was blasting through the Contract Revoked / Knave map jam again last night and good lord... one of the best. the screenshots alone of this baby are super impressive. www.moddb.com/mods/map-jam-9-contract-revoked-theme

I could never get into Quake1. Just find it boring, maybe because everything is so brown. Even QDoom (the Quake mod for EDGE), I've tried to play through it because at the time it really was the most advanced mod available and Fanatic put so much work into it but I just can't.

They look interesting! (The shiny colorful ones).
Do these need a specific port or could I run 'em through Retroarch on ps3? /Me goes off to try.

I did a googe and it seems like the libretro quake core is based on tyrquake so in theory it should work (it has BSP2 support at least). I do wonder what sort of performance he'll get on a ps3 though.

On my ps3 normal Quake runs better than prboom + DBPx, so I'm hopeful.
I probably won't get a chance to try till the weekend.

Another amazing port, and my personal favorite thusfar, is Darkplaces. icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/index.htmlEDIT: Looks like the creator, LordHavoc, now calls himself LadyHavoc. Sigh.

I started to look into it, but tyrquake on ps3 only does .pak files apparently.
Could probably research how to set it all up but I just want to play quick, not mess around for half a day researching and twiddling with crap.
And then find it probably doesn't even run...

Hey, thanks! I'm away for a couple of days but as soon as I'm home I'll try them out.
I almost forgive you, but due to the extreme mental trauma I suffered, my therapist will have to decide.

Only JamX works. Graphical errors abound and the second map I tried errored on load. But plenty other maps to try.
Thanks!

ah well, that sucks. BTW, if you're wondering it's pretty easy to make paks (easier than I thought it was going to be, anyway): tomeofpreach.wordpress.com/2013/06/22/makepak-py/I just ran this python script and then Slade to trim out redundant files (in this case, any 'source' or 'docs' directory and progs.dat, which is the recompiled game logic and I'm pretty sure can't be loaded from within a pak file).

It occurred to me that I never played the Quake mission packs (Scource of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity), so I'm doing that now -- starting with whichever one 'hipnotic' is. It's extremely visually amateurish and definitely feels like a collection of levels squashed together rather than being a journey through a discrete place, but it's alright I guess. For future reference, the laser gun is "impulse 225" and mjolnir is "impulse 226". The devs were too cool to write this in the docs and it's not so easy to google unless you already know one of the numbers, sigh. ALSO, I see a new mapjam has been released: It seems to use Doom 3 textures, but what this has to do with Tintin IDK. @doomro bigolbilly
Requires Arcane Dimensions, apparently:
edit: urgh I can't see the image. Hopefully you guys can but if not you'll just have to imagine it

Do these need a specific port or could I run 'em through Retroarch on ps3? Why are you playing Quake on a PS3? Do you not have a PC? Are you phoneposting? Another amazing port, and my personal favorite thusfar, is Darkplaces. Currently, my favorite port is MarkV, specifically the WinQuake executable it comes with; it uses software rendering, just like the original Quake. I play that with animation interpolation turned off. It has a unique feature similar to Crispy Doom in that it has widescreen 1080 rendering but you can run it in 320x400 or 640x400 resolution to get that classic pixelated look while still running in 1080 and not being stretched. Or you can run it in 1080p normally. I'm not sure if MarkV can run custom maps; I'm certain it cannot run as many of them as Quakespasm. I just figured out how to run Quake 1 in DOSBox with the music, so I might actually switch to that instead to finish my Q1 playthrough. I am currently getting filtered by E2M5 so I haven't been playing as consistently as I should be, plus I'm doing other shit besides playing Quake. I am doing shotgun-starts on each map and that map really was not designed for shotgun starts, as you don't get the SSG or nailgun or anything besides a rocket and not many rockets, so you spend a lot of time shotgunning everything. I might have to look up the secrets to see if there's a secret weapon I'm missing that'll help me clear the map. FYI if anyone wants to run Quake 1 through DOSBox: first, get the GOG version of the game through a torrent; it comes with the music but it's in a CD image file so you have to mount it. Second, I recommend you download the DOSBox fork that uses integer scaling ("DOSBox-pixel-perfect"). Third, watch a youtube tutorial on how to load games through DOSBox if you've never done it. Open DOSBox (don't use the GOG launcher) and use these commands: mount D: D:\ (note that you need to mount the drive where quake is located, in my case it's d) D: cd dosgames\quake (CD = change directory; go to the directory with quake.exe, in my case, it's D:\DOSGames\Quake) imgmount e game.cue -t iso -fs iso quake It occurred to me that I never played the Quake mission packs (Scource of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity) Don't forget about DOPA, the third official Quake mission pack, released in 2016 (and it's free)
EDIT: I forgot to mention: In the GOG download, Quake 1 CD = game.cue, Mission Pack 1 CD = gamea.cue, Mission Pack 2 CD = gamed.cue

Quakespasm has "r_scale [some value greater than 1]" and "gl_texturemode gl_nearest_linear_mipmap" (or ...mipmap_linear, I always forget -- enter these in the console) for the old-timey pixelated look, although you wouldn't get the palette banding. Unfortunately r_scale doesn't work in vkQuake (the Vulkan version of Quakespasm), although that one does have a software-style underwater warping effect, which is the thing I miss most in GL mode.
I tried to shotgun start through Quake a couple of years ago too -- it's really not designed for it. I gave up somewhere in Episode 3 iirc, having no guns just got too tedious after awhile.
Oh, I didn't forget DOPA because I played it when it came out.
