In Doom 2 single player, the rocket launcher found in the MAP01 secret comes with 2 (4 on skills 1 & 5) rockets and you can't find any until MAP03. Do you use the rockets in specific locations of maps 01 and 02 or save them for later? In my playthroughs, I always save them for the next map using the first rocket to the sergeant and 4 former humans in the SSG room. I either fire the second rocket to the imps released by the red key trap or the sergeants in the exit room.

I usually just use one rocket on the group of imps in the outdoor secret area of MAP01 and then get the shotgun to finish them off.

I never used it in the early levels I think. I remember that I used to try to save rockets and cells because the next map would have been harder, and sometimes using a lot the SSG and exit the level with 600 cells lol.

I would just expend that rocket at the impies in the secret area on the same map. If I got them all in one hit, okay, that is great, if not, didn't care. Kinda confident in my abilities, and can expend such valuable resources on such lowly mooks.

I used to do it exactly like the op. Such a satisfying splatty sound when you hit the centre Sarge! I also used to use it to fire down the hole at the underhalls part. The close proximity of the barrels downstairs puts the rocket to good use. You’ve just got to be careful to avoid the splashback and make sure not to good at Doom yourself on the edge of the hole.

I usually save all rockets gathered throughout the game for Knights, Barons, Archies, Cyberdemons, Masterminds, and Painintheass Elementals.
Or for large tight groups of ten or more low tier monsters.

While I think I'm too tight-fisted with cells and rocket expenditure in general, I tend to use the first of the two rockets on the imps by the shotgun secret in MAP01. The latter one usually goes through the Mega Armor window on MAP02. Lots of good ideas to try out here - I must do so on my next venture.
....
Obliterating former humans and imps with barrels, rockets and plasma is really satisfying, and it is an aspect of mapping that is often absent from PWADs - setting up fun situations which allows you to do just that. Perhaps it is best if the set-ups aren't too obvious most of the time. Some skill or attention to detail should be required, I think.

Another beautiful place to use one of those early rockets is at the start of Map03 for the sergeant closet.

I use both rockets on the outdoor imps guarding the shotgun. Then grab the shotgun and pick any leftovers on my way out.

I get bored by the middle of MAP03 so I blow myself up and END THE GAME WITH A BLAST
...does that even qualify as a pun? I'm not sure.
